Oh, awesome, thanks, I added the link to the post! And yeah, definitely; a lot of Google's recent "improvements" have just driven me crazy anyway (things like pop-up previews of what pages look like -- argh, just show me a list of links!)

It's possible you just opted out of saved web searches at some point; even without that, Google is still tracking everything, just not permanently. Sigh.
