Hotmail: I tell this to everyone who ever mentions Hotmail as an alternative. I don't know if they still do this, but back around when I got a Gmail invite, I didn't log in to Hotmail for about three months. At the time it wasn't easy to transfer email over, so I'd delayed doing it. Hotmail deleted every single piece of mail going back five years, without a single warning. (This had also included stuff I _had_ transferred from Outlook even earlier, from a dead desktop.) Yeah, I know it was basically my fault, but it was still pretty devastating.
