To this day I don't understand people who claim they never figured out how to set their VCR.
I never understood it, either. The screen prompts walked you right through the initial setup, and there were menus to program timed recordings with. I know some people are just prone to techno-flail, but the culture-wide acceptance of "oh VCRS are too hard to use" was just baffling to me.
For Christmas one year my parents got me a new VCR that let me record on one channel while watching on another and it was the most amazing thing ever.
Oooh. I didn't have that until this past year, when I finally got a DVR that could do that through Dish Network. Sadly, the DVR kinda sucks, but it is nice to have two things going at once! I used to have to juggle repeats, and beg for copies of things from people.
