But re thor/loki, one thing to keep in mind is that the AO3 search boxes are a text search, not a tags search, which complicates things a bit when it comes to excluding pairings.
First, you need to type the pairing name both/all ways to catch everything, since the search isn't grabbing the actual tags so nothing's being connected behind the scenes.
Second, typing -"thor/loki" is going to exclude anything that contains the words "thor" and "loki" in that order, with no other words between them. So it will also knock out anything where "Thor, Loki" is in the character lists, or where a summary says something like"After tricking Thor, Loki sneaks back to Asgard...".
