I know chunks of the fandom have been gendering the Machine for a while now, but I never have before. I think maybe Root's utter conviction brought me along. I don't really mentally have a gender for the Machine; I tend to view it through Harold's eyes. But Root is persuasive! (And yes, very unsettling *g*)
I suspect it's deliberate that Root is the only one doing the gendering, right now at least; the Machine has always been a person (or a god) to her, specifically *not* a machine the way Harold thinks of it. I think the Machine's sentience and sense of self is going to be a big part of this season.
