Advent calendar 21

And now, with everyone safely in position, the household of Herr Doktor Fischer could march forward to the great climax of Christmas Eve. A frenzied last-minute clean-up began, the maids gliding silently up and down the already gleaming parquet with huge brushes strapped to their feet. Carpets were thumped, feather-beds beaten, and in the kitchen… But there are no words to describe what went on in a good Viennese kitchen just before Christmas in those far-off days before the First World War.

Bedtime prayers, for the children, became a laborious and time-consuming business. Vicky, obsessed by her angel, devised long entreaties for his safe conduct through the skies. The twins, on the other hand, produced an inventory which would not have disgraced the mail order catalogue of a good department store. And each and every night their mother got them out of bed again, all three, because they had forgotten to say. ‘And God bless Cousin Poldi.’

Five days before Christmas, the thing happened which meant most of all to Vicky. The tree arrived. A huge tree, all but touching the ceiling of the enormous drawing room, and: ‘It’s the best tree we’ve ever had, the most beautiful,’ said Vicky, as she had said last year and the year before and was to go on saying all her life.

She wanted presents, she wanted presents very much, but this transformation of the still, dark tree - beautiful, but just any tree - into the glittering, beckoning candlelit vision that they saw when one by one (but always children first) they filed into the room on Christmas Eve… That to her, was the wonder of wonders, the magic that Christmas was all about.

And though no one could accuse the Christ Child of having favourites or anything like that, it did seem to Vicky that when He came down to earth He did the Fischers especially proud. There never did seem to be a tree as wonderful as theirs. The things that were on it, such unbelievably delicate things, could only have been made in Heaven: tiny shimmering angels, dolls as big as a thumb, golden-petalled flowers, sweets of course -oh, every kind of sweet. And candles - perhaps a thousand candles, thought Vicky. Candles which caused her father every year to say, ‘You’ll see if the house doesn’t catch fire, you’ll see!’, and which produced also a light whose softness and radiance had no equal in the world.

The twins grew less seraphic, less placid as the tension grew. ‘Will the angel come tonight?’ demanded Tilda at her prayers.

‘No,’ said Vicky. ‘You’ve got to go to sleep for two more nights.’

Bonus farm news: No actual farm news, so I guess I'll go with food blogging. Today's dinner: a salad with whole wheat grains, broad beans, a little chopped raw kale, and the following things grilled in the oven: polka beets, acorn squash, whole garlic cloves, red onion, and about five mild red aji chiles. On top: a tahini-flowering quince-olive oil dressing, crumbled feta cheese, toasted pumpkin seeds, and pomegranate syrup. Too many things? No.

It's landing on a weekend this year, and it makes sense to do it tonight, so here we go, I'm doing a proper solstice.

(That means not sleeping until the sun returns. Ideally also having a candle burning while I do --giving the sun a beacon to look for!)

My day had bells and then hanging out with Tuesday for the afternoon, since ke was briefly in town. When ker parents came to pick kem up, we had a lovely 15-20 minutes chatting at and about my bookshelf. It felt very good, to get that kind of approval (even if it's not something I would need).

In the evening, after I fed the cat, I slunk around the block to [personal profile] verdantry's house for their and Greg's solstice party. It was small and cozy and chill. I drank mulled cider, and ate plum pudding, and had a really lovely quiet time laughing and joking and enjoying listening to the inside-baseball talk of SCD adventures. Sometimes when it's not your circus it's really enjoyable to just watch the monkeys!

Around midnight, Greg gave, in essence, a toast. It boiled down to "Community Is Good", my political stance these past some years. Community _is_ good. People are the thing that make all the rest of this worthwhile.

I hope you have people to hold you up until the sun returns. I love you! <3

Continuing on my previously posted thoughts about episode 1x06, I just finished watching episode 1x07.

Spoilers under the cut. )

Yes, I'm well aware what time it is. I couldn't sleep, though, so I figured I might as well accomplish something while I was wide awake at 3am.

December Days 02025 #20: Performer

It's December Days time again. This year, I have decided that I'm going to talk about skills and applications thereof, if for no other reason than because I am prone to both the fixed mindset and the downplaying of any skills that I might have obtained as not "real" skills because they do not fit some form of ideal.

12 Days (til) Christmas Day 8

One more Trek fic for the road? (There’s one more still to come, but I’ve tried to put a little more space between them now!) This one takes place after Into Darkness, which was a pretty awful movie with one single redeeming feature: it basically only makes sense if Kirk and Spock are desperately in love.

Anyway, after the events of that film, Spock wants to check on Kirk’s recovery process and ends up getting a bit more explanation than he expected.

The Ghost of Christmas Past

‘Jim's face was as warm as his hands, and his pulse beat solidly beneath Spock's fingertips. He blinked slowly, and Spock's vision blurred as he was pulled into the depths of Jim Kirk's memory. He could tell that Jim, despite having no expertise in mind-melds, was trying desperately to keep the chaos of his mind in order, and push to the forefront the things that had to with the other Spock. But there was a sense as well, beneath the solidness of memory, that he was offering so much more.’

A song to go with it: God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (Barenaked Ladies & Sarah McLachlan)
About a million years ago, Barenaked Ladies were (one of?) the first band(s) I ever saw live in concert, mostly because they were opening for the Violent Femmes. Teenage!me queued up for a free show at a Seattle festival for hours and it was so worth it.

A fic rec: The Maine Thing (Is That You Send a Card) (wangxian modern au) by Comfect
Look, I binged a lot of Christmas fics last year, and this is one I remember enjoying. It's a Hallmark-inspired wangxian fic. but unlike actual Hallmark movies, the characterisation is top-notch. And wangxian, so the pining is of course delicious.

PostSecret Holiday Story

Posted by Frank

—post on PostSecret Facebook page—
Dear PostSecret,
To the person who feels horrible for telling their child there is no Santa. My son just wrote Santa last night asking for that special present. And I didn’t have the heart to tell him that “Santa’s” back injury has kept her from waiting tables these past two weeks, and with no child support check these past 7 months, all the other bills are adding up too. And the local charity is saying the application deadline is past, and they can’t guarantee anything specific. My secret: I wish Santa Claus was real, so on Christmas, no child would have to go without, and no parent would have to feel like they failed their child.

Hey PostSecret,
I just read the response the woman wrote about not being able to get the “special present” for her son. I know I can’t do this for every child out there, but if you’d tell her that there’s someone out there willing to try and buy their son that gift, then I’d appreciate it very much. I’d have to know what the gift is I’m a college student with a limited budget, but I don’t want her to feel like a failure for having an injury. It would be a lovely Christmas present for me if I were able to put a smile on the faces of two strangers on Christmas morning.
-Thanks,
Molly

Frank,
First off let me tell you how thankful I am to you and your wonderful offer. I was not in any way expecting any sort of help. I just wanted to let this person know that they’re not alone. I did set up a PayPal account under this email address.
Gratefully yours,

Dear PostSecret,
I made a donation and I was surprised at how good it felt. You don’t have to be a millionaire to feel the joy of being generous.

Frank,
Santa Claus is real and alive and well. He lives in you and others like you all over the world. I’m overwhelmed by the love and generosity strangers have shown my family today. I never would have imagined it would get as large a response in such little time as it has. Not only will I be able to afford the present he asked for, but clothes and other necessities I’ve been putting off. I’ve got what I need, so please remove my PayPal account from PostSecret and I urge anyone who wants to help someone in need to get in touch with their local charities. Thank you for making my wish come true,
-Amber

First party of the season

(since I skipped the work party) My brother and his wife had all our parents over their house plus one of my brother's BFFs since first grade for noshes and playing with kitties. That was the whole of my evening and my morning was putting decorations on the Star Trek Christmas tree (it's our secondary tree upstairs and always left for me) I did a weird job of it. I think I'll need to redo it again.

My brother's new kitten is a little shit. He's exactly like a cat I had in the 90s. He was evil too. He's going to give me trouble when I'm house sitting. I can just see it.

Shockingly my vascular surgeon did NOT send in the script. If he doesn't do it I'm calling my PCP and she will.

I finished another [community profile] fandomtrees story, the last of the Hazbin Hotel ones. I have about 3 others I would like to write from my original once over of the list. I might not tackle them until post holiday because there are a crap ton of zero gifts and only 1 gifts so I know this isn't going to reveal any time soon. I have a story I'd like to write for someone not part of a challenge.

More K-pop Christmas music!

NMIXX released a video containing both a holiday version of "Blue Valentine" (the same tune and lyrics, but with holiday-style backing music) and a rerecording of "Funky Glitter Christmas." Enjoy!

A couple of fun things to watch for:

  1. At about 1:38, Sullyoon comes out of a doll box, which is fun because people often say Sullyoon looks like a doll.
  2. At about 1:45, the toys have Lily tied to the floor, a la Gulliver's Travels.

Exponentile stats

I mentioned Exponentile a while back, and said I hoped I would let it rest. Well, I did get back into it, and played obsessively for a while.

I started playing in DuckDuckGo on my phone which doesn't save visited urls, and closing the tab each time so that I would have to type the url back in to continue playing. I've tapered off quite a bit, but still feel drawn to spend time in a low-stakes world with defined rules sometimes.

My high score is 114,184 and I generally don't get even close to that before the game ends. I think I got over 100,000 one or two other times.

I've had two 2048 tiles on the screen before, but today I got a 4096! I had two 512s, a space, and then two more 512s, and I managed to finagle a 512 to drop into the space. The 4096 glows like the 2048s, in light green with a reddish aura.

Is anyone else still playing, or have you moved on to the next fun thing?

This post brought to you by being completely wiped out at 7pm. Maybe all that running around has caught up with me. The concert last night was amazing, and I had a good conversation with a stranger waiting in line for the doors to open in the rain. Inside, I chatted with folks I know from choir or dancing. Feels good to be part of the community that way.
