List: National Merit Scholarship semifinalists from the Bay Area, class of 2026

Posted by Bay Area News Group

About 16,000 high school students in the graduating class of 2026 — less than 1% of U.S. seniors — were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The semifinalists, announced on Sept. 10, qualified based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT. About 95 percent are expected to attain finalist standing on the strength of an application detailing academic performance, participation in activities, employment and leadership.

About half the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, to be announced in the spring.

Below are the semifinalists from the Bay Area, listed alphabetically by city (in bold) and high school.

On media: Michigan State fan outrage, the Big Ten’s TV deal and Fox’s interest in the late (late) ki

Posted by Jon Wilner

The single piece of news flowed from three different sources Monday morning over the span of 46 minutes, first from the Big Ten, then Michigan State and, finally, USC. Each reveal generated more bewilderment and outrage than the one before until, hours later, the reaction approached meltdown levels.

An 8 p.m. Pacific Time kickoff for the Spartans?

Yes, Michigan State fans in East Lansing and across the Midwest must wait until 11 p.m. local time for the Sept. 20 kickoff. Watching the entire game will require staying awake until at least 2 a.m. The players and coaches won’t return to campus until mid-morning Sunday.

While seen as an affront to the Spartans, the sport and the free world — to be clear: USC fans aren’t happy, either — the kickoff time makes perfect sense for one of the three media companies paying handsomely for the rights to broadcast Big Ten games for the next five years.

We’ll explain the particulars of the process momentarily, because there’s a larger issue to address. The outrage exposed a lingering, deeply-flawed belief among college football fans that the schools actually have some control over when they play.

Within the Big Ten, that authority lies with Fox, NBC and CBS, which are paying roughly $1 billion annually through the 2030 season. (Technically, Fox owns the Big Ten’s media rights and has sub-licensed packages of games for CBS and NBC.)

The 14 continuing members voted to expand to the West Coast in 2022-23 knowing full well the travel and time zones would be inconvenient, to put it kindly, for the athletes and fans. But every school sold its soul exchange for truckloads of cash. (That’s more true of USC and UCLA than Oregon and Washington.)

Contrary to public opinion, the networks are not the bad guys here. Fox, CBS and NBC work with the conference on dates and times whenever possible — and there are mitigation terms in the contracts — but ultimately must make the best business decisions possible with the inventory available in a given week. They are simply executing on the rights in the contracts.

And with the late kickoff on Sept. 20, Fox is leaning into an enticing, rarely used option.

Let’s piece together the sequence of events that led to Michigan State-USC in the 8 p.m. window:

— Clearly, CBS had the first pick in the weekly draft and opted for Michigan-Nebraska in the 12:30 p.m. window. We know this because the kickoff time was announced in May, which only happens when the network with the top pick identifies its game in advance.

— The second selection obviously belonged to NBC, which chose No. 9 Illinois at No. 22 Indiana for the 4:30 p.m. window. (Matchups involving ranked teams are always intriguing.)

— That left Fox with the third selection.

The 9 a.m. Pacific (i.e., Big Noon) window is always the network’s preferred time slot, but there were limited options: Ohio State and Penn State are idle on Sept. 20; the Wisconsin-Maryland game evidently wasn’t deemed appealing enough; and West Coast home games can’t start at 9 a.m. local time.

(Fox filled the Big Noon slot with the best available Big 12 game, No. 21 Texas Tech at No. 20 Utah.)

Because of exclusivity stipulations in the media contract, Fox is prohibited from airing games opposite the CBS and NBC broadcast windows at 12:30 and 4:30.

Given the circumstances, the best option for Fox was the late window (8 p.m. Pacific), with Michigan State-USC seen as the better matchup than Oregon State-Oregon.

For all the stress placed on the Spartans, it’s worth noting they have a bye the week after USC, so their mid-morning return to campus will not disrupt preparation for the ensuing game.

Also worth noting: Although details of the Big Ten’s media rights contract are private, we have confirmed the deal includes restrictions on the number of times across the lifetime of the deal that the 14 continuing members can be scheduled for a late game on the West Coast. (For those unaware, the Eastern and Central Time Zone teams play no more than one game on the West Coast each season.)

As frustrating as the 8 p.m. Pacific kickoff might be for Michigan State and USC fans, it actually works well for Fox’s over-the-air network.

The experiment began a few years ago, always with two West Coast teams and usually with 7:30 p.m. kickoffs: Stanford-USC drew the assignment back in 2021; and Fresno State-USC got the treatment the following year.

It worked well enough for Fox to ramp up the frequency in 2023, the final year of the Pac-12.

That season, Fox aired three games on its broadcast network in the 7:30 window: Stanford-USC, USC-Arizona State and USC-Oregon. They averaged 2.46 million viewers, according to data on the SportsMediaWatch website.

Fox also aired three games on FS1 at 7:30 p.m. during the 2023 season: Oregon State-Arizona State, Arizona State-Washington and UCLA-Arizona. They averaged 764,000 viewers.

Then came realignment, which changed how the networks programmed their inventory in the Pacific Time Zone.

Fox aired one Big Ten game in the Saturday 8 p.m. window last fall, but it involved two West Coast teams: Oregon-UCLA generated an audience of 1.5 million viewers.

There was a Friday night game involving an eastern team in that broadcast window, however: Rutgers-USC drew 2.01 million viewers. (Traveling on a short week, the Scarlet Knights got thumped 42-20 but had a bye the following week.)

With realignment, the only competition for Fox in the late window comes when ESPN airs games from the seven western campuses now in the ACC (Cal and Stanford) and Big 12 (Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Colorado and Brigham Young).

On Sept. 20, for example, the Michigan State-USC game will be up against Wyoming-Colorado.

Will Fox air more games on the West Coast campuses at 8 p.m. that feature visiting teams from the eastern half of the country? It won’t become a weekly occurrence, we have been told, but it could very well happen again this season — perhaps several times this season and in future seasons. The networks love windows with little or no competition.

While there are mitigation measures for the individual schools in the media contracts, we don’t know if there are restrictions on the total number of 8 p.m. broadcasts Fox can air in a given season. Or that NBC can air at 7:30 p.m., for that matter.

(The Big Ten Network doesn’t face the same exclusivity restrictions as Fox, so games on the West Coast that feature visitors from long distances can air throughout the afternoon.)

Essentially, the immediate fate of West Coast night games involving eastern teams lies with the Big Ten, Fox and NBC. There’s a shared responsibility to manage the windows reasonably and fairly.

Of course, that doesn’t mean every school will be content with its kickoff time each week. Frustration is inevitable, especially for $1 billion a year.

An acquaintance asked me basic questions about “how to get disability benefits” in the USA. Might as well share it here.

I call myself a “disability doula” because I’ve helped many folks through the process of understanding available services, finding disability community, and accepting a new way of life and identity. Except where noted, I’m happy to answer questions.

<div class="wp-block-more-from-category"> <div> </div> </div> <p><em>Just a heads up that this post will spoil some of the (major!) events that happen in the “season two”/season fifteen finale of Ncuti Gatwa’s run on</em> <em>Doctor Who.</em></p> <p>The last season of <em>Doctor Who</em> ended with a lot of significant events. It saw Ncuti Gatwa <a href="https://reactormag.com/tv-review-doctor-who-the-reality-war/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">end his time as the Fifteenth Doctor</a> and regenerate into none other than Billie Piper, who Whovians know as Rose Tyler in the series. (Whether Rose is, indeed, the Doctor or this is some other timey wimey is purposefully vague.)</p> <p>The move was a surprising one, even by <em>Who</em> standards, and came at a point when the future of the show was uncertain. As of now, that future is still unclear. For the past two seasons, the BBC developed the show in partnership with Disney, and there is no guarantee that partnership will continue as the show has fared poorly, ratings-wise. The BBC and showrunner Russell T. Davies have said that a decision about season three would come after the finale for season two, and we’re still waiting.</p> <p>In August 2025, however, BBC Content Chief Kate Phillips said (via <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/08/doctor-who-bbc-committed-disney-1236493929/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em>Deadline</em></a>) that the show would continue regardless of whether the partnership with Disney continues. “Rest assured,&nbsp;<em>Doctor Who</em>&nbsp;is going nowhere,” Phillips said at the Edinburgh TV Festival. “Disney has been a great partnership—and it continues with&nbsp;<em>The War Between The Land And The Sea</em>&nbsp;next year—but going forward, with or without Disney,&nbsp;<em>Doctor Who</em>&nbsp;will still be on the BBC… The Tardis is going nowhere.”</p> <p>The show Phillips is referencing, <em><a href="https://reactormag.com/the-war-between-the-land-and-the-sea-doctor-who-spinoff-gets-an-epic-trailer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The War Between the Land and the Sea</a>, </em>is a <em>Doctor Who </em>spinoff that’s set to come out on Disney+ sometime in 2026. The five-episode limited series will focus on an ancient species that emerges from the ocean and causes an international crisis that UNIT (and others) must mitigate.</p> <p>And while no definitive statement has still been made about getting production for season three up and running, in early September, Jane Tranter, the CEO of Bad Wolf, the production company behind <em>Doctor Who</em>, said that Disney is obligated by to run 26 episodes. “Then, and only then, does Disney+ have to make a decision about whether or not they want to do more,” she told the <a href="https://rts.org.uk/article/it-s-not-question-if-doctor-who-returns-when-and-how-jane-tranter-talks-tardis-and-bad" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Royal Television Society</a>. “I imagine, at a time when Disney are having huge cuts themselves, and there have been slashes in program budgets, they’re looking to take their time to balance everything out and decide what they want to do.” The first two seasons under the deal were 16 episodes total, and the spinoff adds an additional five. Add in the three episodes featuring David Tennant as the Fourteenth Doctor and Gatwa&#8217;s two Christmas specials and we&#8217;re seemingly approaching that number.</p> <p>Still, when we’ll get an update on <em>Doctor Who</em>’s fate remains up in the air. Two things, however, appear to be certain: Gatwa will not be returning as the Doctor, and the BBC will make sure the show continues on. Former showrunner Steven Moffat <a href="https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/sci-fi/doctor-who-steven-moffat-bbc-national-duty-exclusive-newsupdate/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">has even said</a> that the BBC has a “national duty” to continue the series. But when, exactly, <em>Who </em>will return is unclear at the moment, as is who the Sixteenth Doctor will be. These Two New Features Cement Google’s NotebookLM As One of My Favorite Study Apps

Posted by Lindsey Ellefson

While AI tools are incredibly divisive, and I remain highly skeptical of them in general (especially as someone who makes a living writing for the internet), I have to give props to Google's NotebookLM, which is the rare AI tool I've found that meets my standards for being both ethical and useful.

This large language model pulls only from the content you put into it, making it a great way to organize your notes, pull out key ideas, and increase your productivity. And now a new update allows you to use it to create flashcards and quizzes, making it a perfect study companion—and it's still free.

What NotebookLM can do

If you're unfamiliar with NotebookLM's capabilities, here's a quick rundown: You start by uploading your materials to "notebooks," which you can think of as your single source of truth on a given topic. (An SSOT is a repository where you keep all the information, resources, and materials related to whatever it is you're doing.) You can upload local files, files from your Google Drive, links to websites or YouTube videos, or plain old copied-and-pasted text. This is particularly useful for students, as you can input links to articles mentioned in your study materials, upload PDFs from your teacher, or even add digital copies of your textbook, putting all your approved study materials in one place.

You can then ask the chatbot questions about the material, ask it to create an audio "podcast" of people discussing the content (which you can then interact with), and more. I most often use it when I'm working on a large project: I input all the interviews I've done, all the research material I have, and any other related elements, then ask it to help me find quotes or develop an outline. It's also great for summarizing and organizing my notes and class materials when I'm preparing for a grad school exam.

And with the latest update, you have more options: Along the side menu, you'll see buttons for Flashcards and Quizzes alongside Mind maps and Audio overview.

Testing NotebookLM's new features

To test these new capabilities, I chose from my collection of notebooks one filled with materials for a certification exam I've been studying for.

Instant quizzes

NotebookLM previously allowed you to ask it to create quizzes, but it would just generate practice quizzes in plain text with an answer key at the end. The new Quizzes feature is a lot more involved.

NotebookLM quiz
Credit: Google/Lindsey Ellefson

The quiz it generated from seven PDFs of material was extremely detailed and easy to use. It asked a question, gave me four options, and, after I clicked one, told me if it was right or wrong, and included an explanation for why the right answer was correct. All of the information was pulled directly from my own materials, so I didn't have to worry about checking the sourcing.

Effortless flashcards

There are a ton of flashcard apps out there and I've reviewed plenty, but I never stuck with any of them because creating flashcards is invariably tedious—or expensive. In contrast, the flashcards NotebookLM generates were easy to use and, again, pulled right from my materials.

There isn't much to say about them—they're flashcards; you just flip them back and forth to reveal questions and answers—but notably, and unlike other flashcard apps, NotebookLM doesn't have a way to indicate whether you got a card's answer right or wrong. Some other apps will ask you to indicate how you did so they know how often to show you that card again, in line with the Leitner method of flashcard review. That doesn't mean this approach to flashcards is terrible, however, as it adds some additional worthwhile features. For instance, once you flip a card by clicking on it to reveal the answer, NotebookLM adds an Explain button. Click it to get more context on the answer, or to see exactly where from your uploaded materials the card was generated.

NotebookLM is one of my favorite study apps

I've written about all kinds of learning techniques and studying apps, and used most of them myself, whether for work, grad school, or my own personal development. I am squeamish about most AI tools not only because they can be inaccurate, but because they provide so many shortcuts that it's harder to learn and retain information. NotebookLM, meanwhile, makes it easy to study using proven methods, and as it only pulls information from resources you provide (and therefor presumably trust), you'll be able to trust its output.

The addition of the quizzes and flashcards make it an even more powerful and useful study tool than it already was, and that's saying a lot. I'm going to use both of them to prepare for my next exam exam.

This lady's patience may have been wearing thin, but that does not mean she was justified in ordering strangers around like their jobs were in service of her needs. She may not have learned her lesson that day, but she definitely left the encounter feeling rightfully called out.

There is a special kind of satisfaction that comes with properly confronting someone who radiates main character energy and not refusing to quit until they get the picture. This lady arrived at a gas station where the attendant had disappeared for less than a minute. She was clearly in some kind of a hurry, at least so it seemed, so naturally, she decided to yell at the first person she saw to come and help her. That person was not the attendant; he was just another customer who walked out of the store with bags of chips. It would be clear to a monkey that this guy was not the employee that this entitled lady was looking for, and yet, somehow she had the audacity to demand his service.

Thankfully, this wasn't the type of guy who lets mistreatment slide. Not only did he inform the lady that he did not work at the gas station, but he also called her out on her wildly out-of-line behavior and superiority complex. The actual gas station attendant was able to witness this encounter, so at least he was able to see someone defend him rather than boss him around. Bay Area rock star who influenced Nirvana dies from heart attack

Posted by Jim Harrington

Bruce Loose, the iconic lead singer and bassist from the influential Bay Area punk band Flipper, died on Sept. 5 from a heart attack.

The musician — whose real name was Bruce Calderwood — was 66.

Word of his death was made public through various social media posts, including one on X from ex-wife Meri St. Mary.

“Well, my ex Husband + Father to Our Son has died due to heart attack. His words & bass live on in his band Flipper & Our Kid,” the post reads. “We had a lot of years together and apart. Glad he’s out of pain xo.”

The death reportedly occurred in Humboldt County.

Loose had been suffering from health problems for decades. He broke his back in the mid-’90s, the result of a car wreck that sidelined him from performing for a number of years. He also reportedly experienced a stroke in June..

He will be remembered as a ferociously talented frontman of one of the most influential punk bands in Bay Area history. Flipper was nothing short of a punishing presence on the live stage, one whose many admirers included the great punk rock icon Henry Rollins.

“They were just heavy,” the Black Flag legend reportedly wrote of Flipper in his memoir of the early ’80s punk scene, “Get in the Van.” “Heavier than you. Heavier than anything… . When they played they were amazing.”

Flipper’s most famous fan, however, was grunge-rock titan Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana singer-songwriter-guitarist was pictured wearing a Flipper T-shirt in the booklet for Nirvana’s third and final studio album, 1993’s “In Utero.” Cobain was also dressed in his Flipper best in the “Come as You Are” music video as well as when Nirvana first performed on “Saturday Night Live” in 1992.

Nirvana’s bassist — Krist Novoselic — was also a massive fan and would go on to perform as a member of the band from 2006 to 2009.

Nirvana and other notable acts of the era — from the Melvins to Jane’s Addiction — were drawn to Flipper’s heavy bass-driven sound, which utilized repetitive rhythms and distortion to great effect.

The band would hone that signature sound through numerous gigs and recordings beginning in 1979. Flipper was formed in San Francisco by a group of veteran members of the Bay Area punk scene — vocalist Ricky Williams, guitarist Ted Falconi, bassist Will Shatter and drummer Steve DePace.

Williams was soon replaced by Loose, who originally was known as “Bruce Lose” but later changed the name — as the story goes — because “he wanted to be less negative.”

While never achieving widespread commercial success, Loose and Flipper would make some truly seminal noise rock/punk recordings.

The band is best known for the landmark single “Sex Bomb” (not to be confused with the Tom Jones tune of the same name), which was released as a lengthy A-side of a single in 1981. The song was later rerecorded and released as the mighty closing number or group’s first studio album, 1982’s “Album – Generic Flipper.”

“Sex Bomb” was also later covered by R.E.M.

Flipper went on to release three more full-length studio albums, the most recent of which being “Love” in 2009.

The group has called it quits a few times, but has now been active — to one degree or another — since 2005. Loose left the band in 2015 due to health issues.

Downtown Berkeley apartment complex bought by East Bay investor

Posted by George Avalos

BERKELEY — The Dwight apartment complex in downtown Berkeley was bought by an East Bay real estate investment firm that seeks to create affordable housing for the region’s workforce.

An affiliate of Riaz Capital paid $37.8 million for the seven-story building at 2121 Dwight Way, according to documents filed on Sept. 5 with the Alameda County Recorder’s Office.

The purchase price was about 20% below the property’s value in January, as calculated by the Alameda County Assessor’s Office.

The deal fits a pattern of weakening real estate values for East Bay apartments, including Oakland and Berkeley multifamily housing properties. The price paid per unit is in line with other recent purchases. The Dwight, which has 99-units, was bought for $381,600 a unit.

The East Bay apartment market is experiencing a bout of weakness in part because job growth is tepid at a time when apartment development has outpaced demand, according to a report produced by commercial real estate firm Marcus & Millichap regarding the April-through-June second quarter of 2025.

“In recent years, apartment development has been concentrated in the Oakland-Berkeley area,” Marcus & Millichap stated in its report.

The brisk pace of production of new apartment units has triggered higher vacancies, according to the report.

“An average of 2,100 annual deliveries over the past five years has led to an elevated vacancy rate of 7.1% as of March 2025, well above the 4.1% average from 2010 to 2019” in the Oakland and Berkeley area, Marcus & Millichap reported.

The higher vacancy rates have weakened rental levels, which in turn has posed financial challenges for apartment owners that are attempting to repay mortgages.

As a result, some apartments are being sold at prices well below their assessed values. Other properties have endured loan delinquencies or even foreclosures.

Amazon Might Be Developing Its Own Smart Glasses to Compete With Meta

Posted by Stephen Johnson

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Amazon might be developing its own augmented reality smart glasses to compete with Meta, according to Amazon insiders who worked on the project. Codenamed "Jayhawk," the smart specs will reportedly feature a camera, microphones, speakers, and a full-color display in one eye, all packed in a sleek frame. If the rumors, as reported by The Information, turn out to be true, Amazon's smart glasses will hit the market in late 2026 or early 2027.

The goal, presumably, is to not cede the entire smart glasses market to industry leader Meta and newcomers like Google (we'll pretend Google Glass never happened). Whether Amazon can compete on that field remains to be seen, but the company's last stab at tech glasses, the audio-and-Alexa-focused Echo Frames line of smart glasses, didn't exactly set the world on fire when they were released back in 2019, despite being generally regarded as adequate (though uninspiring).

Amazon drivers may get their own AR smart glasses, too

Amazon is also reportedly developing smart glasses specifically for its delivery drivers. These will feature the same technology as the consumer devices in a sturdier package, and give drivers turn-by-turn navigation on a small embedded screen. According to a report from Reuters in late 2024, the delivery driver glasses are designed to provide extremely precise, location-based directions, in order to "shave valuable seconds off each delivery by providing left or right directions off elevators and around obstacles such as gates or aggressive dogs."

It's hard to avoid considering the nightmarish possibilities of an employer being able to literally look through the eyes of its workers—imagine your boss yelling at you through your eyeballs. Smart glasses could easily track eye movements, pauses, or even monitor employees' emotions through facial expressions and voice analysis. Whether Amazon, a company sued for enforcing a schedule so strict that drivers were forced to urinate in bottles, would use the technology in these, or other exploitative ways, remains to be seen.

Former San Jose State basketball player one of three banned by NCAA for betting on their own games

Posted by Associated Press

By CLIFF BRUNT

Former San Jose State player Steven Vasquez was one of three men’s Division I college basketball players who had their eligibility permanently revoked on Wednesday by the NCAA after an investigation determined they bet on their own games and shared thousands of dollars in payouts.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions released findings from an enforcement investigation that uncovered violations by Vasquez, and former Fresno State players Mykell Robinson and Jalen Weaver. The NCAA said the three bet on one another’s games and/or provided information that enabled others to do so during the 2024-25 regular season; two of them manipulated their performances to ensure certain bets were won.

All three were released from their respective teams and are no longer enrolled at their previous schools. Neither school was punished.

“We are aware of the NCAA decision in this matter and the findings as it relates to San Jose State University. The San Jose State student-athlete referenced in the report was removed from the roster several months ago,” SJSU said Wednesday in a statement to the Bay Area News Group.

The NCAA said a sports integrity monitoring service in January notified Fresno State and NCAA enforcement staff that a Nevada sportsbook operator had flagged suspicious prop bets on Robinson. The investigation began a week later. The schools did not immediately respond to a request for comment and the former players could not immediately be located by The Associated Press.

Vasquez played in 11 games for the Spartans last season, all off the bench, but made his final appearance with the team with about a month remaining in the regular season. Vasquez’s bio is not listed on the Spartans’ 2024-25 roster page on the SJSU web site. The 6-foot-2 guard from Saint Joseph High in Santa Maria averaged 8.7 minutes and 2.1 points per game for the Spartans, who went 15-20 and finished eighth in the Mountain West. He played the previous three seasons at Fresno State, appearing in 18 games.

Robinson and Weaver had both been removed from the Fresno State roster by mid-February as news of the investigation became known.

According to the NCAA, Robinson and Vasquez had been roommates at Fresno State during the 2023-24 season. In January 2025, Robinson, who was still at Fresno State, and Vasquez, then at San Jose State — discussed over text message that Robinson planned to underperform in several statistical categories during one regular-season game. Robinson also placed multiple bets on Weaver, his teammate at Fresno State in 2024-25, the NCAA found.

During one game, Robinson, Vasquez and a third party bet a combined $2,200 on Robinson to underperform, and a $15,950 payout was redistributed among those who had bet, the NCAA said.

During that same season, Robinson placed 13 daily fantasy sports over-line and under-line prop bets totaling $454 on parlays that included his own performance. He collected $618 on one occasion.

Robinson placed multiple bets on Weaver, including two bets placed before a game in late December 2024 after he and Weaver exchanged information about their respective betting lines, the NCAA said. Weaver also placed a $50 prop bet on a parlay for himself, Robinson and a third athlete, and he won $260.

Vasquez and Robinson failed to cooperate with the enforcement staff’s investigation, the NCAA said. Weaver cooperated and agreed to the violation in his case.

The latest case comes eight years after a 2017 federal investigation into off-the-books payments to players and their families that, at the time, was against NCAA rules and one of the biggest scandals in the sport’s history.

Since then, the growth of legalized gambling across the United States has raised different concerns for college sports leaders and there have been scattered allegations, including some earlier this year, against programs involving betting.

The NCAA in June said that “several sports betting-related violations by staff members at NCAA schools” have been resolved in recent years and noted its enforcement staff was working on issuing notices of allegations in several ongoing gambling cases.

“The enforcement staff’s sports betting-related caseload has significantly increased in recent years, and our staff — including our new sports betting integrity unit — has been effective in detecting and pursuing violations,” Jon Duncan, NCAA vice president of enforcement, said then.

The nation’s largest college sports organization, overseeing some 500,000 athletes, also said it was considering a proposal that would allow athletes and staff members to bet on professional sports and shift enforcement efforts to college sports betting and “behaviors that directly impact game integrity.” The Division I Council introduced the proposal that will be considered this fall and be implemented if Divisions II and III officials also approve.

Current NCAA rules do not allow athletes or institutional staff to engage in sports betting for any sports that have NCAA championships; bets by an athlete on their own team or own sport risks a lifetime ban from college athletics. Those rules would not change under the pending proposal.

NEW YORK  — The longtime head of a Mexican megachurch who is serving more than 16 years in a California prison for sexually abusing young followers has been charged with racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking for allegedly victimizing members of the church for decades, authorities said Wednesday.

A federal grand jury in New York returned the indictment alleging that Naasón Joaquín García, 56, and five others exploited the church for decades to enable the systemic sexual abuse of children and women for the sexual gratification of García and his father, who died in 2014.

RELATED: California woman sues Mexican megachurch, says leaders molested her starting at age 12

The newly unsealed indictment said the criminal activity included the creation of photos and videos of child sexual abuse.

García was taken into federal custody early Wednesday in Chino, California, where he is serving a more than 16-year sentence after pleading guilty in 2022 to two state counts.

His lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

García is the head of La Luz del Mundo (The Light of the World), which claims to have 5 million followers worldwide. Believers consider him to be the “apostle” of Jesus Christ.

Prosecutors in California have said that he used his spiritual sway to have sex with girls and young women who were told it would lead to their salvation — or damnation if they refused.

Besides García, one defendant charged in the case was taken into custody in Los Angeles while another was arrested in Chicago, authorities said. Three others were at large.

According to the indictment, two of the defendants and others tried to destroy evidence and prevent victims of the sexual abuse from speaking to law enforcement after García was arrested.

It said they pressured victims to sign false declarations disclaiming that any abuse occurred, drafted and distributed sermons stating that all sexual abuse victims were lying and reinforced church doctrine that doubting the apostle was a sin punishable by eternal damnation.

In a release, U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said García and the others “exploited the faith of their followers to prey upon them.”

He added: “When they were confronted, they leveraged their religious influence and financial power to intimidate and coerce victims into remaining silent about the abuse they had suffered.”

Ricky J. Patel, the head of the New York office of Homeland Security Investigations, said the charges resulted from a “yearslong investigation that spanned the country and involved the support of dozens of courageous victims.”

Finished Love at All Ages - think I said most of what I felt moved to say last week, but there was also a certain amount of Mrs Morland whingeing and bitching about the Burdens of Being a Popular Writer (when she wasn't being Amazingly Dotty), whoa, Ange, biting the hand or what?

Sarah Brooks, The Cautious Traveller's Guide to the Wastelands (2024), which I picked up some while ago on promotion and then I think I saw someone writing something about it. I liked the idea but somehow wasn't overwhelmingly enthused?

Read the latest Literary Review.

Since there is a forthcoming online discussion, dug out my 1974 mass market paperback edition of Joanna Russ, The Female Man - I think this was even before excursions to Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed, somehow I had learnt of Fantast, a mailorder operation with duplicated catalogues every few months that purveyed an odd selection of US books. It's quite hard to recall the original impact. Possibly I now prefer her essays?

Carol Atherton, Reading Lessons: The Books We Read at School, the Conversations They Spark, and Why They Matter (2024) - EngLit teacher meditates over books that she had taught, her own reading of them, their impact in the classroom, general issues around teaching Lit, etc - this came up in my Recommended for You in Kobo + on promotion. Quite interesting but how the teaching of EngLit has changed since My Day....

Lee Child, The Hard Way (Jack Reacher, #10) (2006) - every so often I read an interview with or something about Lee Child who sounds very much a Good Guy so I thought I might try one of these and this one was currently on promotion. It's less action and more twisty following intricate plot than I anticipated with lots of sudden reversal, and lots and lots of details. I don't think I'm going to go away and devour all the Reacher books but I can think of circumstances where they might be a preferable option given limited reading materials available.

On the go

I literally just finished that so there is nothing on the go, except one or two things I suppose I am technically still reading.

Up next

Dunno.

This Orbital Massage Gun Is Now Essential to My Workout Routine

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding my work at Lifehacker as a preferred source.

Most of us are familiar with the post-workout massage gun ritual. You finish your session, grab your percussive massager, and pound away at sore muscles hoping to speed recovery. But after spending a few weeks with the Rally orbital massager (which I reviewed), I think the real magic happens before you even start sweating.

Instead of relying solely on static stretching (scary!) or basic warm-up movements, I now spend 5 to 10 minutes using the Rally on major muscle groups before every workout, and it has quickly become a permanent fixture in my pre-run routine.

A true massage gun alternative

I love massage guns. The traditional ones use a hammering, percussive motion that can be effective for breaking up knots and addressing specific problem areas. But for pre-workout preparation, the Rally's orbital motion offers distinct advantages.

First, there's the difference in gentle muscle activation versus sudden, aggressive impact. The orbital motion provides a smoother, more controlled stimulation that wakes up my muscles without the jarring impact of percussion. This is crucial when you're preparing muscles for work, not trying to beat them into submission after they're already fatigued.

Plus, rather than hitting the same spot repeatedly, the orbital motion covers more surface area and promotes broader circulation patterns throughout the muscle tissue. Anecdotally, I've noticed how much better my movements feel when I use the Rally before a workout compared to traditional warm-up methods.

However, the Rally does cost more than most massage guns on the market. Quality percussion massagers can cost between $100 and $300, making the Rally's $499 price tag a tough pill to swallow initially. My argument is that while the Rally can be turned on the side and used for percussion, you simply can't replicate the orbital massage motion with traditional percussion guns. This isn't just a more expensive version of the same thing—it's genuinely different technology. If the Rally prevents even one injury that would sideline me for weeks or require physical therapy, it's more than paid for itself.

How to use the Rally before your workout

Here's how I've integrated the Rally into my pre-workout routine:

Legs (3-4 minutes): As a runner, this is the main attraction for me. I start with my quads, spending about 45 seconds per leg with the Rally on its middle-intensity setting. Then I move to hamstrings and calves. The orbital motion seems to "wake up" the entire leg more effectively than foam rolling or static stretching ever did.

Upper body (2-3 minutes): For anything like bench press or shoulder days, I use the Rally on my pecs, front delts, and upper traps. The warming effect is immediate and noticeable—I can feel the muscles becoming more pliable and ready for movement.

Specific problem areas (1-2 minutes): I have a chronically tight IT band and some shoulder mobility issues. A quick 30-45 seconds with the Rally on these areas before training has reduced my warm-up time while improving my range of motion.

The bottom line

The Rally isn't just another massage gun—it's a tool that's genuinely improving my training quality and consistency. While most people focus on what to do after their workout for recovery, I think that the real breakthrough is what this device can do before your workout for performance. For anyone looking to optimize their muscle care routine, the Rally deserves serious consideration, so long as you can justify the price point.

Why I’d Choose the iPhone 17 Over the iPhone Air

Posted by Pranay Parab

Since Apple's iPhone 17 launch event ended, I've been thinking about which of its non-Pro phones I'd like to buy. The choice isn't very straightforward this year, because both the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air have a few trade-offs, and even if the iPhone Air is a little more expensive, it's not necessarily better at everything. Here are the most important differences between the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air, and why I think the former is probably the better choice, at least for me.

iPhone 17 is available in more colors

I do care about my iPhone's looks, even if my previous, less colorful iPhones suggest otherwise. I've usually opted for subtle, dark shades, but this time around, I feel like switching things up a bit and going for a colorful option. The iPhone 17 gives me lots of great choices, with five different finishes. You can get this phone in Lavender, Sage (a green hue), and Mist Blue, apart from the usual white and black. That gives it five different colorways overall, many of which are the type of vibrant I'm looking for.

On the other hand, the iPhone Air is only available in four color variants: Sky Blue, Light Gold, Cloud White, and Space Black. Of these, I like the black and white color variants, but the others are a bit too subtle for me this year.

iPhone Air promises better build quality

If you compare the displays of the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17, you'll notice that they're identical in everything except size. The iPhone Air gets a slightly larger 6.5-inch screen, as opposed to the iPhone 17's 6.3-inch display. As for overall size, the iPhone Air is 6.5 inches tall, 2.94 inches wide, and 0.22 inches thick. Yes, this means that it's the thinnest iPhone yet, but the iPhone 17 isn't withouts charms. Because of that smaller screen, it's a little more compact, at 5.89 inches tall and 2.81 inches wide. You just have to be willing to put up with it being slightly thicker, at 0.34 inches.

Then there's weight. Even though the iPhone Air is larger, it is lighter than the iPhone 17. The iPhone Air weighs 5.82 ounces (165 grams), while the iPhone 17 weighs 6.24 ounces (177 grams).

To me, the big difference in build quality is that the iPhone Air gets a Ceramic Shield on the back of the phone as well. The iPhone 17 still has glass on the back, which means that it's more likely to crack if you drop it. Both smartphones use Ceramic Shield 2 to protect the display.

iPhone Air has a faster processor, but worse battery life

A19 Pro processor.

The iPhone Air ships with the same A19 Pro chip that the iPhone 17 Pro models have. It has a 5-core GPU instead of the 6-core one on the 17 Pro, but otherwise, you should get similar performance benefits from the iPhone Air. The iPhone 17, meanwhile, ships with the A19 chip. If you don't use your iPhone for heavy workloads like editing videos, shooting lots of videos, or playing graphics intensive games, you probably won't notice much of a difference between the A19 Pro and the A19. But for people with heavy usage, the additional processing power will be nice to have.

It's not a pure upgrade, though. The side effect of being thinner and lighter is worse battery life, which is one big con to the iPhone Air. Apple says you'll get up to 27 hours of video playback on a single charge on the iPhone Air, but 30 hours on the iPhone 17. This means that you might want to consider buying Apple's MagSafe battery pack to boost the Air's battery life to 40 hours of video playback, but then you end up with a bulkier and heavier phone, which kind of defeats the purpose.

Plus, the iPhone 17 also charges faster than the iPhone Air. Apple says the iPhone Air supports MagSafe wireless charging up to 20W with a 30W adapter, whereas the iPhone 17 supports up to 25W with a 30W charging adapter. This means that the iPhone 17 will charge faster wirelessly. It's a similar story for wired charging, with one caveat. According the Apple's specs, an iPhone Air can charge from zero to 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter or higher, while the iPhone 17 can do that in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter. That is faster, although we don't currently have charge time claims for the base iPhone 17 using a 20W charger, so this isn't an exact comparison to the Air.

iPhone 17 is better for photography

iPhone Air's single rear camera.

For me, the iPhone Air's single camera is a dealbreaker for a phone that costs $1,000. The 48-megapixel sensor on the camera is probably good on its own (Lifehacker has yet to go hands-on with it), but in getting the Air, you miss out on the ultrawide lens available on all other iPhone 17 models. That means no 0.5x shooting mode. The iPhone 17 also supports macro photography/video recording and Spatial photos/videos, which is missing in the iPhone Air. Fortunately, the Center Stage front camera is exactly the same on the iPhone 17 and the iPhone Air, so you'll be able to take horizontal videos with it even while holding your phone vertically.

iPhone 17 is cheaper than the iPhone Air

Having looked at all the specs for the two phones, I'm leaning towards the iPhone 17 over the iPhone Air. I'm not really obsessed with the thinness and lightness of my phone so much as what it can do. I'd rather have more camera options and better battery life, and the iPhone 17 is better in both aspects, according to Apple's own specs pages. The biggest positive, though, is the price of the iPhone 17, which is a full $200 cheaper than the iPhone Air.

The 256GB iPhone 17 is priced at $799, and the 512GB variant costs $999. The iPhone Air has three storage variants, with the 256GB option at $999, 512GB at $1,199, and 1TB at $1,399. If I were to pre-order an iPhone today, I'd most probably choose the iPhone 17 512GB. That keeps the price around the $1,000 mark and gives me more than enough storage to handle all my photos, videos, apps, and games for years to come. As nice as the iPhone Air looks, I think most people would be better off either spending a little more for the better cameras of the iPhone 17 Pro, or just saving money and going with the well-rounded iPhone 17 instead.

10 Shows Like 'Foundation' to Watch Next

Posted by Ross Johnson

We may earn a commission from links on this page.

Way back in 1942, Isaac Asimov's Foundation universe (which began as a series of short stories before being published as a trilogy) offered a simple, clever premise built around the idea of "psychohistory," which suggested the actions of individuals might be entirely random, but en masse, we're entirely predictable. And as anyone might have predicted, adapting this, er, foundational work of genre literature seemed only natural for the content-hungry streaming era.

While the Apple TV+ adaptation occasionally misses the point of its source material in throwing in bits of mysticism here and there, taken on its own terms, it's an impressively realized, centuries-spanning science-fiction epic focused on the lives of the scholars and rebels working to bring down an empire in order to save it.

It's one of the few TV shows that truly captures the feel and scope of golden age science fiction, incorporating ideas from other Asimov works outside the Foundation books. But it's not the only one. Here are 10 shows that flirt with the same scope and intelligence.

Dune: Prophecy (2024 – )

This spin-off of the lucrative film franchise could have easily been an afterthought, but instead, we got a thoughtful, juicy space-set soap opera that takes place 10,000 years before the Denis Villeneuve films. There's a lot going on, but generally, the series focuses on Valya and Tula Harkonnen (Emily Watson and Tula Williams)as they struggle to build and maintain the Sisterhood that we'll later come to know as the Bene Gesserit, by any means necessary, and in the face of an unstable Imperium—not at all unlike the Foundation's efforts in the face of Empire over on that other show. The ruling dynasty has a new weapon in Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), a manipulative former soldier who seems immune to the persuasive abilities of the Sisters, thus threatening their places at the Emperor's side. This one resonates with Foundation while also playing a bit like a star-spanning Game of Thrones. Stream Dune: Prophecy on HBO Max.

Andor (2022 – 2025)

Just when I felt like I was done with Star Wars, along came prequel series Andor, the morally complex story of thief-turned-rebel spy Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his radicalization on the road to becoming the heart and soul of the Rebellion. We see the slow march of Empire, as citizens of the galaxy become slowly acclimated to rising fascism, and witness the conflict between various rebel faction: Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma fights from within the Galactic Senate, while Stellan Skarsgård's Luthen Rael, Andor's handler, favors dark deeds done under cover of darkness. Forest Whitaker's Saw Gerrera is content to burn the Galaxy down rather than allow it to become what he hates. It's not only good television, it's the first time in a long time that it feels like Star Wars has something meaningful to say. Stream Andor on Disney+.

For All Mankind (2019 – )

For All Mankind starts with a tantalizing alt-history premise: What if Soviet space pioneer Sergei Korolev hadn’t died prematurely in 1966 and instead helped bring his country’s space program to full flower, extending the space race indefinitely? If America and the world been forced to continue and expand upon the space program, our past (and present) would look quite different, at least according to this show, which jumps across decades to imagine how that might go (à la Foundation's time jumps, if much less dramatic in scope), revealing an alternate past (and future). A spin-off involving a Soviet space program, Star City, is in the works. Stream For All Mankind on Apple TV+.

The Expanse (2015 – 2022)

Set in a somewhat near-ish future, The Expanse (based on the book series by James S.A. Corey) imagines a colonized solar system into which we’ve carried all of our old familiar problems, and then some: Earth sits at the historical and cultural center of things, while Mars colonists, by virtue of having to survive in a challenging environment, have developed technological and military superiority, and folks living in "the Belt" have had to scrabble to survive. Greed, fear, and shortsightedness make conflict nearly inevitable, even if the series isn’t quite as cynical as it at first appears: James Holden and Naomi Nagata (Steven Strait and Dominique Tipper) head up the blended crew of thec cargo ship Rocinante, which winds up having an outsized impact on events by being in the right place at the right time and having a crew with reasonably good intentions. Shohreh Aghdashloo plays Chrisjen Avasarala, a deeply cynical (and infamously foul-mouthed) politician who conceals within her the show's beating heart. Stream The Expanse on Prime Video.

Babylon 5 (1993 – 1998)

J. Michael Straczynski’s wildly ambitious sci-fi epic was way ahead of its time, carrying out a planned (more or less) five-season story arc set on the titular space station that recalls the more orchestrated prestige series of today. Babylon 5 is a remote outpost that becomes the last best hope for peace in the face of conflicting human and alien agendas—even more so after an ancient and very unexpected threat is awakened. The threats from without serve to expose the strains within—the extent to which we come together in the face of shared danger, and the ways we fall apart. With increasingly complex storylines blending science-fiction, politics, and outer-space mysticism, it still holds up (dated CGI effects notwithstanding). Stream Babylon 5 on Tubi.

Shōgun (2024 – )

Not science fiction, but still a stunningly well-produced series depicting the impending demise of an old order, and the rise of what follows in its wake. Set at the tail-end of Japan's Warring States period, the series finds ambitious English maritime pilot John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) shipwrecked in Japan, and in the power of the warlord Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada). Each of these men has something to offer the other. Reluctantly serving as translator between them is Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), highly loyal to Toranaga, but with a complicated past. The political and military maneuvering feel out of time, as does the sense that this upheaval could lead to something new and better, or just as easily, an end of days. Stream Shōgun on Hulu.

Murderbot (2025 – )

Don't let the title fool you: While there's certainly some dark comedy to be found here, this is one of the smarter shows on TV, based on a Hugo-Award winning book series by Martha Wells. Alexander Skarsgård is the title's hilariously deadpan Murderbot, a private "security construct" who's managed to hack its way through its own programming and gain free will—which it mostly wants to use to watch its favorite streaming shows. It can't just run off for fear of drawing attention, but the self-titled Murderbot (known as SecUnit to everyone else) is content to do the bare minimum when it's assigned to a team of inexperienced and naive researchers who don't see the need for a killer security robot, at least until they're enmeshed in a complicated capitalist plot in which they're all just cogs. Stream Murderbot on Apple TV+.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017 – 2021)

While not nearly as serious-minded as Foundation (this is Star Trek, after all), Discovery pushes further into the dark than most of its cousin shows. Sonequa Martin-Green stars as Michael Burnham, initially a disgraced Starfleet officer who eventually becomes captain of the titular starship. Beginning as a prequel set during a conflict between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, the series winds up spanning centuries following a mid-stream time jump, with Discovery and her crew traveling nearly 1,000 years into the future, where the Federation is hanging on by a mere thread. It's after this point that Discovery and Foundation have the most in common—specifically, lead protagonists who have survived for centuries, fighting to preserve what they can of a system they believe in. Stream Star Trek: Discovery on Paramount+.

Silo (2023 – )

The setting here is far from intergalactic, but the scope is no less ambitious in spite of the confined setting. The characters all live in the 144-story silo of the title, a sealed environment sustaining (or imprisoning?) the last dregs of humanity on a ravaged Earth. Societal politics blend with elements of mystery (nothing in the silo is quite what it seems) in an impressively conceived dystopia. Based on Hugh Howey’s book trilogy, the show has at least one other thing going for it in addition to its killer cast (including Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, David Oyelowo, Common, and Tim Robbins): Unlike so many premature cancelled streaming series, it will reach a planned conclusion after having been renewed for two more seasons. Stream Silo on Apple TV+.

Battlestar Galactica (2003 – 2009)

While the original was a fun, but often awkward, blend of smart sci-fi and 1970s kitsch, the aughts reboot from Ronald D. Moore (who also co-created the aforementioned For All Mankind) and company brought science fiction fully into the prestige TV era. Created to be humanity's robot slaves, the Cylons rebel and launch a sneak attack on the human colonies, leading to an exodus into space. The only hope for humanity is to reach the mythical world of Earth. The monotheistic Cylons see their crusade as a nearly holy one, while the more rationalistic human refugees struggle to survive and find common purpose in an order that's crumbling day by day. Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell lead an impressive cast. Buy Battlestar Galactica from Apple TV+ and Prime Video.

What Valkyries need to do to avoid playing league-best Lynx in first round

Posted by Nathan Canilao

The Valkyries did themselves no favors by losing to the Seattle Storm on Tuesday

If Golden State would have beaten Seattle, the expansion would have been locked into the No. 6 seed with a matchup against either the Atlanta Dream or Las Vegas Aces in the first round – two teams that the Valkyries have beaten at least once this season.

But that didn’t happen.

Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase gestures to her players in the second quarter of their WNBA game at Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif., on Thursday, June 19, 2025. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)
Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase gestures to her players in the second quarter of their WNBA game at Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif., on Thursday, June 19, 2025. (Jose Carlos Fajardo/Bay Area News Group)

The Valkyries collapsed late and will now go into a must-win game against the Minnesota Lynx on Thursday. If Golden State loses, it will be the No. 8 seed and will stay in Minnesota for Game 1 of the first round on Sunday.

The stakes of Thursday’s game are simple: Win and clinch the No. 6 seed to avoid playing the Lynx.

Golden State has lost all three matchups with Minnesota this season by an average margin of 9.3 points. The Valkyries were competitive in all three games until the fourth quarter when the Lynx’s star power became too much for Golden State.

The good news for the Valkyries is that Minnesota will likely rest its starters on Thursday, something the Lynx did in Tuesday’s game against the Indiana Fever. Superstar Napheesa Collier and former Stanford standout DiJonai Carrington both took Tuesday’s game off and could do the same against Golden State.

But the Lynx’s bench has been formidable all season. In last Saturday’s loss to Minnesota, guard Natisha Hiedeman came off the bench to score 24 points in 28 minutes to torch Golden State in its regular season home finale.

Who would the Valkyries play as the sixth seed?

If both Atlanta and Las Vegas win their regular season finales, the Valkyries will get Atlanta in the first round. Should Atlanta win and Las Vegas lose its final game against the Los Angeles Sparks, Golden State would play the Aces in the first round.
