WIP Big Bang/WIP Reverse Bang 2025 - Posting Reminder For Tumblr Posting / Regarding Late Posting

Just a friendly reminder to those posting on Tumblr that using the @ function for tagging the WIPBB blog is not enough unless you've added your bragging rights to the post. I will not reblog posts that don't have bragging rights attached! You can add them to a reblog and @ us again, or email the filled out bragging rights to the mod email and I can add them as a reblog to your original post. You can also submit your bragging rights to Tumblr with a link to your fic/art and a link to your Tumblr post!

Also, re: posting late. If you are posting late within 24 hours of your posting date you're fine; life happens and we totally understand. If it's over 24 hours late, though, please request a new posting date. We have plenty of open slots!

Why I'll Probably Upgrade to the Base iPhone 17

Posted by Pranay Parab

The iPhone 17 is the most affordable of the four iPhones Apple launched at its September 2025 "Awe Dropping" event, and that automatically makes the most interesting to me. It may appear to be the most "boring" at first glance, but as I pointed out when I compared it with the iPhone Air, the iPhone 17 is probably the best new iPhone for most people. It's priced well, is packed with nice new features including a 120Hz ProMotion display, and it gets most of the features usually reserved for more expensive iPhones. Here's everything you need to know about the iPhone 17, and why you might want to upgrade to it.

iPhone 17 body, display, and weight

The iPhone 17 is the most colorful option among the four iPhones being launched in September 2025. You can choose from five different finishes, including Lavender, Sage (a green hue), Mist Blue, White and Black.

You get the 120Hz ProMotion display on this phone, which will make navigation and animations look smoother and was reserved for the Pro models until now. You'll also be able to use it when you're playing games or watching videos, and the phone can still drop the refresh rate to 1Hz when you're not using it to conserve battery.

The iPhone 17 also has a slightly larger, 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with Ceramic Shield 2 for improved scratch protection. Thanks to that 1Hz support, the phone also works with Apple's Always-On Display, which means that you can quickly check the time on it without switching on the screen.

Apple says the iPhone 17 is water resistant up to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes, too. This means that if you drop your phone in water, it should be safe as long as it's within those limits.

Apple has still managed to keep this phone fairly light, at 6.24 ounces (177 grams). That makes it heavier than the iPhone Air (5.82 ounces or 165 grams), but it should still be reasonably easy to handle.

iPhone 17 processor

Credit: Apple

The iPhone 17 ships with Apple's new A19 chip, and it's the only one of the four new iPhones to use that. All other phones launched in Apple's September 2025 event use the A19 Pro chip. The A19 has a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators. At the time of writing, early Geekbench scores give us a fair idea of the A19's performance. It appears to score around 7 to 8 percent more than the iPhone 16's A18 chip. According to the same report, the iPhone 17 has 8GB of RAM. Apple doesn't make RAM specs public, but benchmarking tools are a reliable indicator for this metric.

This phone supports 2 eSIMs and doesn't have any physical SIM slots in the US. In some regions, such as India, the iPhone 17 has one physical SIM slot and one eSIM. In China, the iPhone 17 doesn't support eSIMs at all and ships with two physical SIM slots instead.

iPhone 17 cameras

Apple has included two rear cameras on the iPhone 17, alongside the Center Stage front camera. The big news is that you don't have to rotate your iPhone for landscape selfies any more. The Center Stage camera, which has an 18-megapixel sensor, uses AI to automatically adjust your frame to include more people in the shot if needed. It can take portrait and landscape selfies.

The rear camera setup has a 48-megapixel main sensor, and a 48-megapixel ultrawide lens. This means that you can take photos in 0.5x, 1x, and 2x shooting modes. The iPhone 17 supports Dual Capture, too, which allows you to record videos with the front and rear cameras at the same time. The rear cameras support macro photography and they can record videos in Dolby Vision up to 4K at 60fps.

iPhone 17 battery life

An iPhone 17 with Apple Intelligence being used.
Credit: Apple

You can expect your iPhone 17 to easily last a full day on a single charge with moderate use. Apple says the device lasts for up to 30 hours with continuous video playback, which is higher than the iPhone Air (27 hours) or even the iPhone 16 Plus (also 27 hours). The iPhone 17 supports Apple's MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging. You can charge it from 0 to 50 percent in 30 minutes using a 30W or higher adapter paired with a MagSafe charger. If you buy Apple's 40W charging adapter, your iPhone 17 will go from 0 to 50 percent within 20 minutes.

The smartphone has a USB-C port, but it only supports USB 2, which means that transfer speeds aren't going to be as fast as that on the iPhone 17 Pro (which supports USB 3 with speeds up to 10Gb/s).

A good upgrade and a great price

Multiple colors of the iPhone 17.
Credit: Apple

The iPhone 17 overall looks like a solid upgrade with a better display, better battery life, and better cameras. It's not a revolutionary product, but it won't disappoint anyone who's upgrading from an older phone. If your iPhone 16 series device is working fine, then you can probably continue using it for another year at least, but if you have an iPhone 12 Pro Max like I do, or an iPhone 15 or older device, then the 17 could be a great upgrade.

As someone looking to upgrade, at $799 for the 256GB variant, the iPhone 17's price is particularly appealing to me considering all the features it has. The 512GB iPhone 17 is priced at $999 if you need more space, and that should be enough storage to handle everything you can throw at it.

This 55-inch Hisense QLED TV Is Under $300 Right Now

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding my work at Lifehacker as a preferred source.

Not everyone is looking for a 5-star TV experience. Sometimes, a decent TV at the right price is good enough. That's exactly what the Hisense QLED E6QF Fire TV can offer, and right now, the 55-inch class is just $287.99 (originally $429.99), dropping to the lowest price it has ever been, according to price-tracking tools. This is one of the best deals for budget TVs right now.

QLED TVs are a step down from OLEDs, but they have some attributes that can make them a better choice than OLEDs for the right person. Price is the main one, with OLEDs easily hovering over $1,000 for any size you get. With the Hisense E6QF Fire TV, you won't get the picture quality that OLEDs can offer, but it will be good enough for most people, especially those who aren't videophiles. They still offer much better color and contrast than a regular LED TV.

The Hisense E6QF Fire TV has some nice features that make it stand out from other budget TVs at its current price. It has a light sensor that detects your room's light to adjust its brightness accordingly, a feature called Adaptive Brightness that you usually find in mid-tier and high-end TVs. Since its OS is Fire TV, you can install Kodi to virtually watch anything, and you get Alexa built in for voice commands. If you're an Apple user, you can also AirPlay or your Apple HomeKit with it. It has support for Dolby Atmos, so movies and shows will pop out more, and there is a dedicated Game Mode Plus for gamers that boosts the motion rate to 120Hz.

If you're not looking to spend much and are looking for a good deal on a 55-inch QLED TV, the 55-inch Hisense QLED E6QF Fire TV is it.

covid vaccine and "underlying conditions"

[personal profile] siderea points out that you probably have >a href="https://siderea.dreamwidth.org/1882720.html">"at least one underlying condition" for which the covid vaccine is (still) recommended by the US government, because most people do: the list includes being overweight, high blood pressure, depression, former smokers, and "physical inactivity." She speculates that the list may have been drafted to be as inclusive as possible, by someone who didn't have the authority to say "just give it to everyone."

The current official announcements, widely echoed, sounds as though most people can't get the vaccine, because the FDA is now being run by anti-vaxxers. That is almost certainly not an accident: if you think you can't have the vaccine, you won't ask for it.

Siderea also points out that even if you aren't on that list, a doctor can prescribe this, or almost any approved medication, to anyone they think it's appropriate for. In other contexts, this is what they mean by "off-label" use of a drug.

Note, however, that this may affect whether you have to pay for the vaccine yourself, rather than it being covered by insurance.

It has been pointed out elsewhere that you can always lie to them: nobody has a complete list of former smokers, for example.

2025/2026 Round Franchise Wrangling Post

It’s time for the return of our franchise wrangling post! Please make sure to look at our previous franchise nominations guidelines and see if they still work for you and your fandoms, as well as get a general sense of how a franchise is likely to be split or nominated.

What is this post for?

Is one of your fandoms part of a large franchise? Do you have a case for why your fandom should appear in the tagset in a specific way? (All Media Types, Split by Specific Movie and TV Show, Some Combination of These?)

Please comment below to let me know how you and other fans of this franchise would like your fandom to appear in the tagset! (If there's already a thread for your fandom please comment there.)

I will be taking suggestions until October 31st 11:59 PM EDT so the new franchise nominations guidelines for the 2025/2026 round can be updated well ahead of nominations opening. Thank you all so much for helping to crowdsource this resource that keeps our tagset organized!

Okay, so the bit where I'm falling down on the holiday is sleep.

Air-con is too much. Bed is too soft. Pillows are too hard. Not warm enough.

AAAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH

Last night, I woke up at 3:30am and...didn't really manage to get back to sleep until around 6am. And even that was only for about half an hour.

I'm travelling okay, though. COVID has cleared up, although I sometimes feel a bit stupid lately, trying to work out what I'm saying and how to say it, and thinking "I'm sure I used to know how to phrase this".

Anyway, it's nearly 11pm where I am.

Time for sleeeeeeeep.

Forging Ghost is Moving to the AO3!

Posted by callmeri

Forging Ghost, a Spike/Angel fanfiction archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

Forging Ghost was a Yahoo! Group dedicated to fanfiction for Spike/Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel: the Series. Ghostsforge, the moderator, preserved Forging Ghost when Yahoo! Groups was shut down in 2019 and asked Open Doors for assistance in importing its works to AO3.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with Ghostsforge to import Forging Ghost into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanart currently in Forging Ghost will be hosted on the OTW’s servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from Forging Ghost to the AO3 after September. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who had work(s) on Forging Ghost?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We’ll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.

Please contact Open Doors with your Forging Ghost pseud and email address(es), if:

  1. You’d like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3, or would NOT like your works added to the archive collection.
  5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your Forging Ghost account, please contact Open Doors and we’ll help you out. (If you’ve posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they’re yours, that’s great; if not, we will work with the Forging Ghost mod to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on

If you still have questions…

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We’d also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of Forging Ghost on Fanlore. If you’re new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We’re excited to be able to help preserve Forging Ghost!

Webnovel Check-in: I Will Live with Humility and Dependability as My Motto ch. 1-10

Source

"Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu /
I Will Live with Humility and Dependability as My Motto"

[NovelUpdates Page]

Chapter 1: Pretty much the prologue. When Reika is 5 years old, she realizes that when she was an in adult in the modern world, something happened and she was reincarnated into an otome game called 'you are my dolce' where 'Kisshouin Reika' was a villainess who bullied the MC and tried to snatch her LI before falling into disgrace. Of course the current Reika doesn't want that fate so while she still has to go to the academy so her parents don't freak out, she plans on avoiding getting close to anyone and keep her head down.

Chapter 2: Explanation chapter on how the school works. The elite who started Zui'ran in primary are part of a privileged group called Peony Society or 'Pivoine'. Reika thinks about how she'd prefer a friend to followers. The school is really advanced, it has a lot of modern tech and lots of sports stuff etc.

Chapter 3: While Reika is at the salon, she catches a glare from Kaburagi Masaya, the Emperor (the protag's LI from the manga) when she's thinking about a funny scenario about him.

Chapter 4: Reika spends time with her family. She has a brother she didn't know about from the manga who she gets along with. Her mother came from somewhere else and didn't get to be in Pivoine, so likes talking about it with Reika. The father is disappointed she isn't getting close to Masaya.

Chapter 5: With her brother's help, she manages to get her mother to let her go to cram school to ensure she can have a life after her family's ruin. Her brother is unexpectedly crafty. XD

Chapter 6: Summer vacation. So this is literally a modern world, Reika is going to Tahiti and her followers to Hawaii. We learn that Masaya has a childhood friend, Shuusuke, who fujoshi shipped with each other in Reika's past life. OG Reika and Shuusuke did not get along. Reika has an existential crisis over his hair not being honey-colored like in the official manga illustrations lol

Chapter 7: Summer vacation scene, summer vacation party. Reika has a reminisce about her past. Totally agree with her on 'all you can eat buffet'. XD

Chapter 8: Reika makes her brother ring a bell with her at the party, people comment on it being like a pair of newlyweds then she makes him dance with her. 😂 She's really testing his noble patience this chapter.

Chapter 9: Oops, Masaya and Shuusuke are there even though they're supposed to be on vacation still. Reika is embarrassed at being seen dancing as the only little kid. The reason the childhood friends were there was to make their older childhood friend Yurie's birthday. Yurie is Masaya's first love.

Chapter 10: Reika finds a way to sneak out during break time at cram school to get commoner treats. Yurie's friend Aira has taken a liking to Reika which is a problem because it brings her closer to Masaya. Shuusuke also has his eye on her.

The chapters are short so it's easy to read, but for now I take a break. The next chapter is in her brother Takateru's POV, interesting!

Sverre Ormgard lived on the island of Verheim, a lonely outpost on the bitter edge of the Western sea.

There, he kept watch over the horizon, searching for ships that sailed toward the waters beyond his island boundary. Those ships were often lost, as maps for his region of the world were clearly marked with the cautionary words, Here be dragons.

Sverre fed his signal fire day and night, that sailors might find his island even in the gloom and dark. Some of the ships would sail into his lagoon and send a landing party ashore, where Sverre waited to greet them. Those were the times he enjoyed the most.

Sverre would invite the sailors to his cabin and give them fresh spring water to drink. He might also offer a few apples from the island's leeward side, in exchange for a story. Sverre dearly loved stories.

Tales of kings and warriors or dragons and princesses delighted him. Even fables were welcome, if they were all his guests knew. Sverre had visitors from many lands, and some were richer in lore than others. In turn, he would recite a story he had learned from another vessel. Sometimes he would be offered stories he had previously shared, and this amused him, for the phrasing and the details always seemed to have changed.

I've never had any complaints—I love manual stretching, I love percussive guns attacking my muscles, and I pride myself in prioritizing recovery while I'm marathon training.

But now, I've got a new gadget that's become the centerpiece of my recovery game: the Chirp Rolling Percussive Massager (RPM). Though I'm still loyal to my massage gun, here's why I have been gravitating toward the Chirp RPM as of late.

What makes the Chirp RPM different

I've reviewed the Chirp RPM in-depth, but I can sum up my reaction to it thusly: It's what I imagine you'd get if a massage gun had a baby with a foam roller. It combines the targeted pressure of percussive therapy with the coverage area of a foam roller. Instead of holding a massage gun and trying to reach awkward spots on your back, or struggling to balance on a foam roller, the RPM does the work for you. The device features a motorized roller that delivers percussive massage; you simply lean against it or position your sore muscles on top of it.

When you put it in its base, the hands-free design means allows you to actually relax during your recovery session instead of working to maintain pressure and positioning. And it feels amazing on my muscles.

How to get started with your Chirp RPM

The Chirp RPM is bulkier than a traditional massage gun, so you do need to find a dedicated space for it. When you first turn it on, I recommend starting with the lowest intensity setting. Begin with gentle contact to gauge pressure and positioning before ramping it up.

Here are some more specific tips and tricks for getting the most out of your Chirp RPM.

For back muscles

  • Lay down with your back against the roller

  • Position the roller at shoulder blade height and slowly move side to side to target different muscle groups

  • Let the roller work vertically along your spine's sides (never directly on vertebrae)

  • Bend your knees slightly to adjust the targeted area

For leg muscles

  • Sit on the floor with the targeted muscle group against the roller

  • Use your arms for support and positioning

  • For calves: sit with legs extended, calves resting on the roller

  • For hamstrings: position the back of your thighs against the roller

For foot relief

  • Sit in a chair with the RPM on the floor

  • Place your affected foot on the roller

  • Use gentle, consistent pressure for 2-3 minutes

  • Focus on the arch and heel areas where tension typically builds

For IT band focus

  • Lie on your side with the IT band against the roller

  • Support yourself with your opposite arm

  • Move slowly along the length of the band

  • Stop and spend extra time on particularly tight spots

How to structure your recovery massager sessions

What if you brought your workout mindset to your recovery sessions? In other words, consider your recovery something that involves dedication and progress, just like exercise itself. Your muscles need time to adapt to the percussive therapy, and jumping to high intensities can cause more tension than relief. Start each Chirp RPM session at the lowest setting and gradually increase intensity:

  • Begin at level 1-2 for the first 30 seconds

  • Increase to level 3-4 for the main treatment (2-3 minutes)

  • Finish at level 1-2 for the final 30 seconds to help muscles relax

I've also built out a sample recovery session, if you're like me and love extra structure"

Pre-workout activation (5-7 minutes)

  • Light intensity (levels 1-3)

  • Focus on major muscle groups you'll be using

  • 30-45 seconds per muscle group

  • Goal is activation, not deep tissue work

Post-workout recovery (10-15 minutes)

  • Moderate intensity (levels 3-5)

  • Spend 2-3 minutes per major muscle group

  • Focus on areas that feel tight or overworked

  • End with light pressure for relaxation

Maintenance sessions (15-20 minutes)

  • Variable intensity based on muscle needs

  • Comprehensive full-body approach

  • Spend extra time on chronically tight areas

  • Include both active muscles and supporting stabilizers

Common issues to consider

Remember, you should avoid using a massager on areas with bruising, if you have acute injuries or inflammation, or if you experience sharp pain during use. If the RPM feels too aggressive (trust me, that plastic is hard), you can use extra clothing as a buffer layer. Experiment with different angles to reduce direct pressure, and consider ramping up session times until your muscles adapt to this practice. As with anything in the world of fitness, focus on quality over quantity—effective pressure is better than longer, ineffective sessions.

I'm hoping to figure out a way to rig the Chirp RPM's base to my wall, so I can use it while standing up, targeting those hard-to-reach back muscles, but I haven't managed it yet. (If anyone has had success on this front, please let me know in the comments.)

The bottom line

By combining the benefits of percussive therapy with the coverage of traditional rolling, the Chirp RPM eliminates many of the frustrations that come with conventional recovery tools. It honestly solved of frustrations I didn't even know I had. The hands-free operation means you can actually relax during recovery, making it way more likely you'll stick with a consistent routine.

While the size makes it a home-only solution, the versatility and effectiveness make it worth the space investment for anyone serious about recovery. After weeks of testing, I can honestly say my muscles have never felt better, and my recovery routine has never been more enjoyable.

Here's When (and How) You Can Preorder the iPhone 17

If you watched Apple's "Awe Dropping" event, or followed the news about it, you'll know there are four new iPhones on their way: the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

While iPhone updates have become a bit boring in recent years, the 17 series actually breaks the mold a bit: The iPhone 17 now comes with previously exclusive "Pro" features, like a variable high-refresh rate display; the iPhone Air is the company's thinnest iPhone ever; and both the Air and the iPhone 17 Pros now have a camera "plateau" that houses their respective lenses—though the Air only has one.

People don't tend to line up for new iPhones like they used to, but that doesn't mean they're always easy to buy. All four new iPhones will be available to buy in stores on Sept. 19. However, if you want to ensure you have the best shot of picking up a new iPhone on day one, you'll want to preorder it.

When can I buy the iPhone 17?

Preorders begin on Friday, Sept. 12 at 8 a.m ET (5 a.m. PT). You will be able to preorder any of the new iPhones from most carriers at that time, including AT&T, Boost Mobile, T-Mobile, and Verizon, as well as through Apple directly. If you choose the latter, however, you'll want to take advantage of Apple's early preorder feature, which lets you get pre-approved, confirm a trade-in, and configure your iPhone before preorders go live. This could save you time on Friday morning, and give you a better shot at preordering your chosen iPhone. Apple is only offering this through 9 p.m. PT, or midnight ET, tonight.

That said, there are many ways to preorder an iPhone tomorrow. Each carrier has its own specific deals, which depend on the iPhone you choose (including its storage size), your trade-in, and the carrier deal or plan you sign up for. You only need to take a look at the fine print at the bottom of Apple's sales page to see how complicated the deals can be. If you do go through Apple, you can still take advantage of the carrier deals, which you'll see when browsing on each iPhone's sales page.

I've compiled links to each of the carriers offering iPhone 17 preorders below, including a simplified version of each company's deals. Some have active preorder pages you can browse now, while others simply have landing pages with information on each phone. However, by Friday morning, each will have their preorder pages live.
