Even housewives weren't necessarily exclusively housewifing

Okay, my dearios, I am sure all dear rdrs are with me that tradwives are not trad, they are deploying an aesthetic loosely based on vague memories of the 1950s - and meedja representations at that - and some very creepy cultish behaviour - they are not returning to some lovely Nachral State -

And that as I bang on about a lot, women have been engaged in all kinds of economic activity THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE OF HISTORY since economic activity became A Thing.

Why tradwives aren’t trad: The housewife is a Victorian invention. History shows us women’s true economic power

I have a spot of nitpickery to apply - it rather skips over and elides the move from the household economy into factories e.g., leading to 'separate spheres' with wife stuck at home (and even that was a very blurry distinction, I mutter); and also the amount of exploitative homeworking undertaken by women of the lower classes (often to the detriment of any kind of 'good housekeeping').(Not saying middle-class women didn't also find ways of making a spot of moolah to eke out household budget.)

And of course a lot of tradwives are actually performing as economically productive influencers: TikTok tradwives: femininity, reproduction, and social media - in a tradition of women who made a very nice living out of telling other women how to be domestic goddesses, ahem ahem.

Part 2: Current State of the Housing Market; Overview for mid-September 2025

Posted by Calculated Risk

Today, in the Calculated Risk Real Estate Newsletter: Part 2: Current State of the Housing Market; Overview for mid-September 2025

A brief excerpt:
On Wednesday, in Part 1: Current State of the Housing Market; Overview for mid-September 2025 I reviewed home inventory, housing starts and sales. I noted that the key stories this year for existing homes are that inventory increased sharply, and sales are down slightly year-to-date compared to last year (and sales in 2024 were the lowest since 1995). That means prices are under pressure.

In Part 2, I will look at house prices, mortgage rates, rents and more.

As I noted last week, the house price trend suggests house prices will be down year-over-year by the end of 2025. However, there are two new powerful forces pushing in opposite directions - mortgage rates have declined, and unemployment is increasing. Both could impact sales and house prices.

Earlier this week, Cotality’s Chief Economist Dr. Selma Hepp (formerly CoreLogic) wrote: “July’s decline in home prices is atypical — the last two periods where we saw monthly declines in July was in 2022 and during 2006-2008 period …” In 2022, house prices fell briefly as mortgage rates surged higher, and inventory increased sharply. And the 2006-2008 period was the start of the housing bust.
...
Case-Shiller House Prices IndicesThe Case-Shiller National Index increased 1.9% year-over-year (YoY) in June and will likely be lower year-over-year in the July report compared to June (based on other data).
...
In the January report, the Case-Shiller National index was up 4.2%, in February up 3.9%, in March up 3.4%, in April report up 2.7%, in May up 2.3% and in June up 1.9%.

And the June Case-Shiller index was a 3-month average of closing prices in April, May and June. April closing prices include some contracts signed in February.

So, not only is this trending down, but there is a significant lag to this data.
There is much more in the article.

Cabin Pressure Limerick Challenge, Abu Dhabi - Limerick posted as of today

ChrisCalledMeSweetie at Tumblr proposed a Cabin Pressure limerick challenge of a poem every day based on Cabin Pressure's episodes, in alphabetical order as per the canon.

The example provided was gen, so I wrote a set of gen limericks.

Then I reflected that gen limericks are not really in the spirit of limericks, so I also wrote a set of dirty limericks.

And then I got too down to post poems for a while, so today I spammed everyone subscribed to me with Fitton through Limerick's limericks.

2025 52 Card Project: Week 36: Little Luxuries

Sometimes it's easy to pick what I'm going to do my collage about each week. Sometimes I have to scrounge around a bit for a subject.

There was a moment this week when I started mulling, "Well, what has this week been about?" and it occurred to me that at that exact moment, I was stirring my coffee with a sterling silver spoon.

I have inherited a significant amount of sterling silver from my grandparents, and my mom has passed along some of hers to me early. Even before that, I have often delighted in fine things that gave my life a luxurious touch. When the girls were young, I occasionally would serve what we called formal dinners, where we practiced eating with elaborate place settings and talked about proper manners.

I've been experiencing a bit of a cash flow issue lately. Nothing serious; I don't mean that I can't pay my bills, but with some recent medical and car repair expenses, I have had to cut back on some things. I've stopped eating out for the time being, and sometimes I have to wait a few days, until after pay day, to pick up the next set of groceries.

Recently, I decided to pull out a set of small sterling silver espresso coffee spoons I inherited from my grandmother. I went out looking for a lovely crystalline receptacle to keep them in on my counter by my coffee pot, and I found one, touched with gilding at the rim, at a vintage store, for $5. I bought a bottle of lavender syrup, and I will sometimes put a small amount in my coffee.

My sister bought me some luxury hand soap for my birthday, and I have decided that I like it so much better than the soft soap I had been picking up at the grocery store.

When the belt has to be tightened, it helps to indulge in a few small luxuries.

Image description: Background: A luxuriously painted vaulted ceiling at Versailles. Bottom center: a miniature sterling silver spoon rests on a counter. Behind it: a coffee cup with a small glass jar with more miniature silver spoons. Right: a bottle of lavender coffee syrup. Behind the coffee cup: a bottle of luxury hand soap and a house plant.

The Newbery Treasure Hunt

[personal profile] littlerhymes asked which Newberies were hardest to find. As it happens, I kept a list of how I found all the Newberies, so I can answer this in some detail!

When I started this project, I was living in Indianapolis, and the Indianapolis Public Library had all the Newbery Honor books back to 1970. Since I looked this up in 2020, it’s possible they have some sort of cutoff where they keep at least one copy in the system for fifty years? Or maybe it was just a coincidence.

At any rate, the cutoff was sharp at 1970 itself, when there were three books the Indianapolis library didn't have. Through my mother, I had access to the Evergreen Library Consortium which connects libraries through Indiana. Through my father, I had access to the Purdue University libraries. Using these resources, I found two of the Honor books of 1970, except The Many Ways of Seeing: An Introduction to the Pleasures of Art, which my mother bought me as a present, which is CHEATING.

Um. I mean, thank you for the kind present, Mom!

(But it’s still not in the proper treasure hunt spirit!)

These two libraries also filled the gaps in the Indianapolis collection of the 1960s Newberys.

In the 1950s, the treasure hunt got real. I got four books through interlibrary loan. One I read on a trip to the Indiana State Library, and another I read on in the Lilly Library Reading Room in Bloomington, which conveniently has a collection of first editions of many Newbery Honor books.

I also read one through openlibrary.org, and I will note that many of the books I found through other means are available on this website. I only used it a few times for two reasons: one, the scanned books tend to give me a headache, and it’s impossible to be fair to a book while you have a splitting headache. And two, this also cut into the whole treasure hunt aspect. Does openlibrary.org bring you a book on a little pillow like the Lilly Library? Absolutely they do not.

(I also almost certainly could have gotten all the books I found in various archives and reading rooms through interlibrary loan, but again, would they have been brought to me on a little pillow? No! Sometimes one must simply embrace the thrill of the chase.)

For the 1940s, I had one Indiana State Library book, three interlibrary loans, and three Lilly Library Reading Room books. (I also read two more books on openlibrary.org, and it was the poor scanning of Eva Roe Gaggin’s Down Ryton Water that broke me.)

The 1930s were the hardest decade by far. I had twenty-three interlibrary loans, three Lilly Library books, two Indiana State Library books (I should note that the Indiana State Library doesn’t check out the older materials in its collection, so all these books I read in the library), four Lilly Library Reading Room books, and near the end of the project I discovered that the Purdue Archive had one of the books I needed, so I got to read that one in the Purdue Archive Reading Room.

The 1920s were actually easier, mostly because the Newbery Committee chose far fewer runners-up in the 1920s than the 1930s, but also because the 1920s books were beginning to come off copyright. (As of 2025, they’re all out of copyright.) So I could read many of them through gutenberg.org or Google Books, but since 1928 and 1929 were still under copyright at the time, there was still an interlibrary loan, a Lilly Reading Room book, and an Indiana State Library book.

And that is the tale of my Newbery treasure hunt! Now that I’ve finished the list, I feel a trifle bereft: what books can I have the archivists bring me on little pillows now? However, you’ll be pleased to hear that I’ve already started a small list of books that I look forward to reserving at the archives at my leisure.

Friday open thread: involvement in research

Happy Friday, everyone! I'm on Day 1 of a four-day weekend (to use up some annual leave that needed to be claimed by the end of September), and life is good.

Today's prompt is inspired by the fact that I'm on the final day of contributing to a long-running (presumably) market research project by Ipsos. I first ended up involved with this due to answering the door to some Ipsos recruiters many years ago when we still lived in the rental place in Cambridge, and I've been contributing to this project on an annual basis ever since. It involves logging media/internet usage and other activities every half-hour for a week, and then filling in a big survey about media and internet usage, leisure and consumer activities and so on, and I assume is used for market research around demographics, internet usage, and consumer behaviour, based on the kinds of questions being asked. It's very little work for the incentive — £40 in shopping vouchers (which this year was increased to £50) — so I'm always happy to keep doing this, since responses are anonymised.

So my prompt is as follows: have you ever been the subject of research (whether market research like this, or academic research at a university)? What was involved?

In addition to this Ipsos thing, I used to sign up for linguistics and psychology research projects back when I was a postgraduate student, although I always felt the amount of effort involved wasn't worth whatever they paid you at the end, which was usually £10, or a £10 Amazon voucher or similar. Once I had to lie in an MRI machine for close to an hour, and respond to images being shown to me. It's hard enough being in an MRI machine when it's for a medical reason, but I swore never again to put myself through that kind of unpleasantness for a research project.

What about you?

An Educational Overview from Cake Wrecks
aka
Grammar time! (Can't wreck this! Whoah-OH!)

Students, today we're going to look at how your lessons apply in the real world. Pay attention, because the pop quiz starts...now.

It's quite common for people to confuse "you're" and "your." Here's a simple way to remember which is witch:

 This is wrong:

...because it raises the question, "Your old WHAT?"

This is correct:

Although it should be noted that owning an old Kurt in this day and age will never be "right."

Here's another proper usage you high schoolers may find more relevant:

Next, this rhyme can really come in handy for your spelling skills:

 "I before E except after C..."

"but not in the words 'Tigers'...

"'their'...

 "Or 'anniversary!'"

Quotation marks are vital for indicating when you're quoting someone verbatim or just being really, really sarcastic:

*Asterisks often denote footnotes, albeit sometimes invisible ones. Invisible footnotes are the work of the Knights Templar, and should be reported to Dan Brown "immediately."

homonym (n) is each of two different words having the same pronunciation but different meanings, spellings, or both.

For example, "here" is where we are now:

While "hear" is what we do with our ears:

Next time we'll also discuss properly distinguishing your cursive "w"s from your "m"s.

Luckily, putting the proper endings on number contractions like first, second and third is as easy as 1th, 2th, 3th!

Well, I'm sure this lesson has been super helpful, students, so for your homework I want you all to show your teacher what you've just learned with an informative drawing. Bonus points if you use sprinkles. Or bring cake to class. Or write a sonnet entitled, "Why Jen from Cake Wrecks Deserves an Honorary PhD and also a Working Proton Pack, If Possible."

Now, chop chop!

Oh, and next week: biology!

Thanks to Ruth, Shane S., Gal N., Beth N., Brandi H., Amy S., Carla D., Margaret J., Maria R., Sarah R., Christina M., Nicole S., Michele T., & Jess for believing the children are our future. And for teaching them "well" and letting them lead the weigh.

*****

P.S. Teachers, if your classrooms need any more fun artwork I've got just the set for you:

Sweetzer & Orange Set of 13 Posters for Middle and High School Classroom

I especially like how they're all spelled correctly. :D (I think my favorite is "May your choices reflect your hopes, not your fears." So many good ones, though.)

Sleep

At my last psych appointment, I reported back that while getting my evening tasks done earlier was great, and for four nights I'd successfully gone to bed at a reasonable time, it hadn't lasted. I had continued to get the tasks done (most nights) but had lost the ability to then go to bed afterwards -- I'd adjusted to the new normal, and 'finish my list' was no longer 'and it's bed time' it was 'and it's time to read fic / flirt with tumblr / etc'.

(aside: the expression on the psych's face was priceless. They said approximately 'You did the homework?! only teachers do the homework!?'. And here was me feeling that I'd half arsed the homework. Which, yeah. )

Building on that success, I've moved my bedside lamp down from the top of the bedside shelf (say, 1.1m up) to the shelf that is the same height as the bed. This enables me to read in bed with just the lamp on, and not have a really bright room. And it will surprise no-one who knows about sleep and light and screens, putting the screen away and then reading in low light on paper? My insomnia is dramatically reduced.

I'm now waking up before the 7am alarm more days than not. But what I'm not feeling is rested. I'm obviously getting 'enough' sleep in some way, or I wouldn't be waking, but I'm not sure I'm getting enough sleep cycles. Or maybe it is that I've got a lot of stress happening, and I'm just burning through all the oomph I have.

Early Look at 2026 Cost-Of-Living Adjustments and Maximum Contribution Base

Posted by Calculated Risk

The BLS reported yesterday:
The Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) increased 2.8 percent over the last 12 months to an index level of 317.306 (1982-84=100). For the month, the index increased 0.3 percent prior to seasonal adjustment.
CPI-W is the index that is used to calculate the Cost-Of-Living Adjustments (COLA). The calculation dates have changed over time (see Cost-of-Living Adjustments), but the current calculation uses the average CPI-W for the three months in Q3 (July, August, September) and compares to the average for the highest previous average of Q3 months. Note: this is not the headline CPI-U and is not seasonally adjusted (NSA).

• In 2024, the Q3 average of CPI-W was 308.729.

The 2024 Q3 average was the highest Q3 average, so we only have to compare Q3 this year to last year.

CPI-W and COLA Adjustment Click on graph for larger image.

This graph shows CPI-W since January 2000. The red lines are the Q3 average of CPI-W for each year.

Note: The year labeled is for the calculation, and the adjustment is effective for December of that year (received by beneficiaries in January of the following year).

CPI-W was up 2.8% year-over-year in August (up from 2.5% YoY in July), and although this is early - we need the data for July, August and September - my guess is COLA will probably be around 2.8% this year, up from 2.5% in 2025.

Contribution and Benefit Base

The contribution base will be adjusted using the National Average Wage Index. This is based on a one-year lag. The National Average Wage Index is not available for 2024 yet, although we know wages increased solidly in 2024. If wages increased 5% in 2024, then the contribution base next year will increase to around $185,000 in 2026, from the current $176,100.

Remember - this is an early look. What matters is average CPI-W, NSA, for all three months in Q3 (July, August and September).

In which oranges are not &c

1. What is your favourite fruit?

Oranges. /not...
My favourite fruit is J, in the rhyming slang sense, obv, although that's more an answer to "who is your favourite fruit?" Anyway, she's a complete and utter costard! The costard of my eye. A pearmainent feature of my life. She tickles my ribs, and is my other half... in a way. She is absolutely pipping and my top of the pips. I would never take her on the costard with the hilt of my sword, or throw her into the malmsey butt in the next room (which we have not got), not even for remuneration.
Or my favourite fruit is damsons, if you want the straight-forward answer, because the fruit tastes almost as good as the scent of damson flowers in spring.

2. What is the last book you read?

I have not yet read my last book (I hope!). The latest was Lady Susan, by Jane Austen (yes, I have also seen and enjoyed the film).

3. Do you like any of your school photos?

I don't possess any of the few school photos ever taken of me. No, I didn't "like" any of them although the photo of my entire primary school class dressed up ridiculously in homemade red, white, and blue accessories for Liz R II's silver jubbly was at least lolarious. :D

4. Do you ever blowdry your armpits to get the deodorant to dry quicker?

No, is that rly a thing? With most commercially produced western European liquid deodorants the best way to make them both work and dry faster is to gently rub your arms backwards and forwards as if you were running (not chaffing yourself, obv). This works the same way as rubbing your hands in an air dryer, which is faster than merely blowing, or working in liquid hand moisturiser &c.

5. What was the last film you watched?

Can't remember the last feature length fiction, but the last "film" I watched was a USian "rockhound" looking for Ordovician fossils in Kentucky. He makes a lot of excited noises and refers to his finds as "big boy" &c and my friend says that without the visuals he'd sound like a pr0n actor, lol. I also watched over 2 hours of Time Team's latest 3 episode documentary "Digging for Disney"; and the Tim Traveller's 13 minute race to the top of Monaco, between our Tim walking up stairs and Matt Gray walking on the level and using public lifts:

(I saw one ship shaped like Clippy lol)

Sadly I don't have enough internet at sea to dl the update myself. I'm missing out on a stunning mural 😔

I'm on Europe Lynx / Sietch Yaracuwan, it's been fairly free from bothersome trolls. They've added a bunch more events and story characters as well, so I'm diving back in when I get home. In case somebody wants to buddy up for base building? I'll have to start almost from scratch because I suuure didn't put anything in the bank like I ought to have.

+ And Marvel Rivals is adding Angela!! I don't want to be interested in a hero shooter but HOT DAMN
