Quick note — comments

Unfortunately I need to take a preemptive (and hopefully temporary measure): screening all comments made by people not on my access list on most of my journal posts. This is because the level of filters available for comment screening are none, all, or non-access list only.

I'm hoping that this will only need to be a temporary thing and I can revert back to normal, unscreened settings, but I thought I'd take the opportunity to check if anyone subscribed to me, but not on the access list wanted to be granted access.

The vast majority of my posts have always been public, and I want to keep things that way, and I tend to defer to other people's preferences when granting access (i.e. if someone adds me as the result of e.g. a friending meme, if they subscribe only, I reciprocate, and if they grant access, I reciprocate in that way as well). But I'm not precious about this, and don't expect reciprocity.

If you're already on my access list, nothing should really change and you should be able to comment on most posts as normal. If you would like to be granted access, please comment on this post (here all comments are screened) or send me a message. If you're happy with things as they are, do be aware that future comments of yours may be screened, but I'll try to unscreen them at the point at which I reply.

I hope this makes sense — feel free to ask for clarification in the comments if you're not sure what I'm explaining here.

Poshmark Is Lowering Its Shipping Fees for the First Time in a Decade

There is big news brewing in the resale community, which I am an active participant in both as a buyer and a seller. Poshmark, my preferred resale platform, is lowering its shipping costs starting tomorrow, which means buyers will pay less for purchases—but sellers will have a very different process to go through to get their goods shipped out.

The Poshmark pricing change

One of the main reasons I have preferred using Poshmark over other apps like Mercari and Depop is the flat-rate shipping. Other apps charge shipping based on the weight of the purchase, which in a lot of cases is just a guess the seller makes, so you don't know your true total until it's time to check out. On Poshmark, whether you bought one item from a seller or a whole bundle of listings, you paid $8.27. But starting Sept. 12, that's going down to $6.49, according to Poshmark.

This is major news for buyers, who will have to spend less. Sellers have the option of offering "discounted shipping" to buyers, with the difference between the free, $4.99, or $5.99 shipping coming out of their earnings. I've personally had a lot of success offering $5.99 shipping and getting sales out of it. Sometimes, the difference of two dollars is really all it takes to close a sale, so I am thrilled that my buyers will soon be more incentivized to make purchases.

Poshmark pricing, packaging, and problems

The $8.27 got you Priority Mail shipping, which was nice enough because it meant quick deliveries for buyers and a remarkably easy shipping process for sellers. All a seller had to do was go to the U.S. Post Office, grab a self-sealing Priority mailer, fill it with the sale, and take it to the counter. Poshmark generated a QR code for the attendant to scan, and the whole thing was on the way in just a few seconds. Crucially, sellers never had to pay for any packing materials or print their own labels, which is something you have to do if you sell on, say, Vestiaire Collective, and was always a hassle to me. It's another reason I try to avoid selling on other platforms. I don't have a printer and I don't want to buy a box or tape. The flat-rate Priority shipping from Poshmark made my endeavor to sell off all my old clothes almost too easy. Even better, Priority envelopes and mailers are free to take, so I (and loads of other sellers) would just stock up on them at the post office. Just this Monday, I had to ship out eight sales. It took me no time at all because I had a stockpile of Priority envelopes and, again, never had to print any labels or do anything beyond walking the stuffed envelopes over to the post office.

The new $6.49 price does not qualify you for Priority shipping. Instead, it covers USPS Ground Advantage shipping—and the mailers for that aren't free. In fact, starting tomorrow, USPS can refuse to ship Poshers' sales if they're in Priority mailers. Starting Oct. 12, anyone who tries to ship Ground Advantage goods in the Priority mailer will be charged $5, which will come out of their Poshmark balance. You'll also have to pay a little more at the counter if your package weighs more than five pounds. That part sucks a bit for me, as I sell a ton of bundles, or multiple listings to a single buyer, but I'd rather pay a few dollars and get the old stuff out of my house to make room for the new stuff I buy with my Poshmark balance.

A lot of resellers have been annoyed about the packaging changes, though, because they also stocked up on Priority mailers and are worried that they may have to buy envelopes or boxes. Poshmark announced that sellers are eligible for free packaging through USPS, but resellers have been reporting long wait times when they call the number to request them (1-800-610-8734). After fielding those complaints, Poshmark produced an email address, USPSPoshmark@victorypackaging.com, encouraging sellers to share their names, Poshmark closet names, addresses, and phone numbers along with their requests for materials.

For what it's worth, I submitted my supplies request via email last night and haven't heard back. I'm sure I will, eventually, and my boxes and envelopes will be shipped out to me, but to stay on the safe side, I'm ordering some mailers off Amazon. I found packs of 50 and 100 ranging in price from $10 to $40. They even have cute designs on them, which I find a little cloying but am choosing to see as an opportunity to enhance my customers' buying experience. I don't love this eating into my profits, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

The new selling process

This doesn't go into effect until tomorrow, Sept. 12, so here's hoping I get a couple sales today and can use up a few more of my Priority mailers. I assume there will be a little learning curve when it starts, though. Yesterday, while dropping off a sale at the post office, I asked the attendant for a rundown of Ground Advantage shipping. She told me that unlike with Priority, I can ship out my stuff in any vessel I want, like an old, re-taped Amazon box, a decorative mailer, or the brown mailers for sale at the post office. Beyond having to procure those materials somehow, the process with otherwise be the same for me: I'll pack things up and have the USPS attendant scan my QR code. (Poshmark does allow you to print your own label, and that won't change.) Buyers will get their goods after two to five business days, which also isn't that unlike Priority shipping, so there's no real disruption there.

I, for one, am delighted by this change, which is Poshmark's first shipping reduction in a decade, even if it means I need to adjust my process and might end up paying for some envelopes and boxes. Poshmark partnered directly with USPS to create these prices and the system for ordering free materials after it was announced that Priority Mail prices would be going up across the country.

Everything You Need to Know About the New Apple Watch Series 11

Posted by Khamosh Pathak

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding Lifehacker as a preferred source for tech news.

The Apple Watch lineup for 2025 is finally out in the open. This year, Apple has three Apple Watches on offer, the flagship Series 11, the budget-friendly SE 3, and the rugged Ultra 3. The Series 11, being the middle child, is intended as a catch-all smartwatch for most Apple users.

The Series 10 received a big redesign last year, with a thinner and lighter case, and a bigger and better display. So, this year is about incremental changes. But that doesn't mean there aren't new features. Alongside a few software changes (that are also coming to older watches), Apple is promising a more durable display and longer battery life this time around.

The same design, but with a better display

The Series 11 has the same case and basic design as the Series 10 (although it's now available in a new Space Gray finish), and even many of the same internals. It has the same S10 chip, and the same heart rate sensors and connectivity features as the outgoing model. All the existing software features for fitness tracking, health tracking, apps, and notifications will also continue to work the same, although with the watchOS 26 update, all compatible Apple Watches will get a Liquid Glass redesign.

The Apple Watch Series 11 comes in two sizes, 42mm and 46mm, and is 9.7mm thick. The 42mm Series 11 in aluminum weighs 30.3 grams, and the 46mm version weighs 37.8 grams.

There is a physical upgrade, though. Apple has improved the display this time around. The LTP03 wide-angle display is now made of "Ion-X material," which makes it twice as resistant to scratches as the previous model, which is always good news.

Better Battery Life

The Series 11 is the first non-Ultra Apple Watch since launch to get a battery upgrade. For ten years, the Apple Watch has been rated for 18-hours of use, but now, Apple says you can get 24-hours out of it. This number assumes medium usage across the day, including allowances for features like GPS workout tracking. If you’re a light user, you could possibly get more than three days out of the watch, although Lifehacker has yet to confirm Apple's claims via testing. Still, there are times when I can get close to two days from my Series 10.

The Series 11 also supports fast charging, which can charge from 0 to 80% in 30 minutes, and a quick 15-minute burst is supposed to net you eight hours of usage. If you use the watch's Low Power Mode, Apple says you can get up to 32 hours of battery life out of it.

5G Connectivity

The Series 11 is the first Apple Watch to get 5G connectivity, which can help speed up podcast and music streaming. But it will also help with calls, especially in areas with spotty coverage, making sure you don’t suffer from call drops just because you’re using your Apple Watch instead of your iPhone.

High blood pressure notifications

Sleep score and hypertension notifications.
Credit: Apple

At its “Awe Dropping” keynote, Apple talked about two new health features for the Apple Watch Series 11: high blood pressure notifications, and Sleep Score. Both seem useful, but although they're new for the Series 11 launch, they aren’t exclusive to the Series 11. Hypertension Notifications will be rolled out to Apple Watch Series 9 and higher, and Sleep Score will be available for users as far back as the Series 6 and SE 2. Sleep Score uses sleep tracking data like duration, time in sleep stages, and frequency of wakefulness to give you an overall score for your sleep health, while Hypertension Notifications will alert you when your watch detects chronic high blood pressure.

These notifications use data from the heart rate sensor to analyze how blood vessels respond to the your heartbeats. An algorithm passively works in the background reviewing data over 30 day periods, and will notify you if it detects a pattern of possible hypertension.

If you have an older Apple Watch, this is a great time to upgrade

Overall, the Series 11 is a small upgrade compared to the Series 10, with the biggest new feature being the improved battery life. Still, that's not nothing, especially because the Apple Watch’s battery is quite small, and degrades faster than the iPhone's.

If you already have the Series 10, like I do, the Series 11 probably isn’t for you. But if you have the Series 8 or earlier, or like my colleague Pranay Parab, you’re rocking the SE 2, the Series 11 will make for a great upgrade.

And that’s usually how Apple positions new devices. If you’re coming from a Series 8, you’ll get the new thin design, bigger screen, amazing battery life, and new health features like hypertension notifications.

The Apple Watch Series 11 retails for $399 for the 42mm model, and $429 for the 46mm model. Additionally, this year, Apple has also released a new Apple Watch SE 3 with an always-on display, the latest S10 processor, and a better screen, all for $249. If you’re on a budget, the SE 3 might be worth looking into as well.

The Apple Watch Series 11 is available to pre-order and will ship September 19th.

Everything the iPhone Air Might Be Telling Us About the Rumored iPhone Fold

Posted by David Nield

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding Lifehacker as a preferred source for tech news.

Apple hasn't said anything official about plans to introduce a foldable iPhone, but there's little doubt that one is on the way. The rumors have been accumulating for years, and both Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo—two of the most reliable Apple tipsters in the business—say the device will launch in 2026.

Now, and with perhaps less than a year until the arrival of the foldable iPhone, Apple has dropped the iPhone Air. It wouldn't be a huge surprise if the iPhone Fold looked more or less like like two iPhone Airs with a hinge in the middle, which means the thinnest iPhone ever might be giving us clues about Apple's foldable future.

Thinness and durability

Thinness is an absolute must with a foldable phone: No one wants two regular-sized handsets stuck together in their pocket or bag. This isn't so much of an issue when a foldable is opened, but when it's closed, any excess bulk is much more noticeable—so foldable phone makers are trying to minimize the problem, literally.

The Honor Magic V5 foldable is a mere 4.2 mm (0.17 inches) front to back when opened, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has exactly the same thickness. The iPhone Air is officially 5.64 mm (0.22 inches) thick, excluding the camera bump, which beats the 7.95 mm (0.31 inches) thickness of the regular iPhone 17 by a significant margin.

The iPhone Air is very slim. Credit: Apple

While the foldable iPhone will probably have to go even thinner, Apple is clearly heading in the right direction. Meanwhile, it's also tackling another crucial characteristic of foldable phones: Durability. The extra moving parts and the additional screens involved with a folding smartphone mean that it has to withstand knocks and scrapes, and obviously have a hinge mechanism that lasts.

The iPhone Air is unique among the 2025 models in having the brand new Ceramic Shield 2 material (a kind of glass-ceramic hybrid) on the front of the phone, and the older Ceramic Shield material on the back. It's a fully protected handset. While the Pro and Pro Max models have dropped titanium, the iPhone Air sticks with it for extra durability, to the point that it's actually the most durable iPhone ever—so expect similar from the iPhone Fold.

Redesigned internals

Apple's September 2025 launch event went into detail about how the internals of the iPhone Air had been redesigned from scratch to make as much room as possible for the battery. Most of the other components have been shifted up to the top of the chassis, which is one of the reasons why there's only a single rear camera on the iPhone Air.

The physical SIM card slot has been completely dropped in a bid to give the phone as much battery capacity as possible despite its slim size, and foldable phones present a similar challenge; the batteries in these devices have to provide power to a tablet-sized display when they're fully opened up.

Apple is likely to use a few similar engineering innovations when it comes to designing the iPhone Fold. There's going to be double the internal space available compared to a standard handset of the same thickness, but there are also a lot of components to fit in, including the hinge mechanism.

When it comes to the grand unveiling of the foldable iPhone, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see another X-ray video showing its internals, and how Apple has made the most efficient use of the space possible. The iPhone Air required a new approach to fit the restraints of the form factor, and so will the iPhone Fold.

What the most recent rumors say about a foldable iPhone

Lifehacker rounded up the most prominent rumors round the iPhone Fold back in December, and there has been plenty more online chatter around the device in the months since. This speculation goes back a long way, pretty to when Samsung first started releasing foldables in 2019, but it seems the wait might be coming to an end.

Gurman has again gone on the record to say that we'll get a foldable iPhone in 2026, followed by an all-glass, curved 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027. He predicts this will be a book-style foldable rather than a flip phone, and it[ll apparently have two rear cameras, one selfie camera on the main screen, and another selfie on the outer cover display. It'll apparently be available in black and white.

Gurman has also said that Apple is working hard to minimize the crease on the iPhone Fold, and make the hinge more durable than it is on competing models. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, meanwhile, has reiterated that the foldable will use a Touch ID sensor built into the power button, iPad-style (the iPhone Fold is effectively a mini iPad, after all).

As for pricing, it's probably a good idea to start saving now: Supply chain sources are pointing towards a starting price of $2,100-$2,500, which is a little higher than the $1,999.99 starting price of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

All of this above remains very much in the realm of rumor for the time being, and nothing is certain until Tim Cook appears on a livestream and tells us the iPhone Fold is real—but I think the iPhone Air has given us our most substantial look into the future yet.

The iPhone 17 Comes With This 'Groundbreaking' Security Feature

Posted by Emily Long

Did you know you can customize Google to filter out garbage? Take these steps for better search results, including adding Lifehacker as a preferred source for tech news.

In addition to a new chip and upgraded cameras announced at Apple's "Awe Dropping" event earlier this week, the iPhone 17 lineup comes with a "groundbreaking" security feature designed to protect your device against hackers.

The upgrade, which Apple is calling Memory Integrity Enforcement (MIE), targets spyware tools like Pegasus, a surveillance software that can extract data from compromised mobile devices running iOS or Android. By reducing an attacker's ability to exploit memory corruption vulnerabilities on Apple devices, MIE is intended to disrupt the surveillance industry and make "mercenary spyware" far more expensive to develop and maintain.

What this security update means for the iPhone

According to the announcement from Apple's Security Research team, Memory Integrity Enforcement is "the industry’s first ever, comprehensive, always-on memory-safety protection covering key attack surfaces" with protection for the kernel and more than 70 userland processes.

The feature is built on the Enhanced Memory Tagging Extension (EMTE) specification released in 2022, which finds and reports memory corruption bugs in real time. It also includes mitigation for Spectre V1, a speculative-execution vulnerability, with minimal impact on performance ("virtually zero CPU cost," according to Apple).

Memory Integrity Enforcement protects users by default and is supported by the new A19 and A19 Pro chips found in the iPhone 17 lineup and the iPhone Air. Apple is also implementing memory safety upgrades for older hardware that doesn't support memory tagging.

As The Verge notes, this update from Apple is akin to memory integrity security features for Windows 11 and MTE found on Google's Pixel 8 series and later.

Mobile gaming has come a long way from endless swipes on Fruit Ninja. With today’s games offering open worlds, complex combat systems, and even the option to stream full console titles, the weak link is usually the controls. Touch screens get frustrating fast. That’s where a snap-on controller makes all the difference, and the Razer Kishi Ultra is one of the more serious options out there. At $89.99 on Woot (for the next three weeks or until it sells out), it’s a notable deal compared to Amazon’s $132 listing (down from $149.99), and even undercuts the lowest price it has ever hit ($99.99), according to price-trackers. Prime members get free standard shipping, while others will need to pay $6, though shipping isn’t available to Alaska, Hawaii, or P.O. boxes.

The Kishi Ultra feels less like a mobile add-on and more like a split Xbox controller. It’s bigger than most competitors, with proper grips and full-sized controls that make longer sessions less of a hand-cramp gamble. The triggers use Hall Effect sensors, so they’re smoother and more precise than the typical mushy plastic triggers you’d find elsewhere, and the mechanical face buttons click in with satisfying feedback. There’s also a proper 8-way D-pad for fighting games or retro titles, plus a couple of extra bumper buttons you can map however you like. Razer even added its signature Chroma RGB lighting around the edges if you want a little flair. And unlike other handheld controllers, this one doesn’t just fit phones; it can stretch wide enough to hold an iPad Mini, which makes it feel more versatile.

That said, you’ll need a USB-C device to use it, so anything older than an iPhone 15 is out. The upside is that the same port lets you double this as a wired PC controller, which extends its usefulness beyond mobile. Also, on iOS, cloud streaming support can be a little clunky with services like Xbox Game Pass, and there’s no virtual gamepad option, but for Android users or those who stream via Razer’s own Remote Play service, it works well, notes this PCMag review.

Having a great pair of headphones or earbuds that meets your needs exactly—whether you’re at the gym, working from home, or even showering—doesn’t have to mean shelling out a ton of money. The best of them can be really expensive, but if you're a patient shopper, you can usually find a good deal—and I don't mean waiting around for Black Friday.

Here are the best discounts you can find on earbuds and headphones right now. I'll be regularly updating this story with the best deals, but given these sales can end at any time, I would advise you not to wait if you spot one that fits your budget.

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson

This year's Book I Read Because Multiple People Raved About It in the Worldcon Discord. The first book in a secondary world fantasy series with lots of complicated political intrigue, the rave reviews were extremely enthusiastic but also quite vague. And now that I have read it, I understand the vagueness. It's a hard book to describe. It's constantly shifting and transforming, with twist after twist leaving you constantly unsure what the book is actually about and where it is going. But the twists are solid and well supported and never pull you out of the world of the book. But it was an exhilarating read and I highly recommend it.

a very brief post

I just need to get this out.

Cut for US political talk.

I am not sorry that Charlie Kirk is no longer part of this world. But now he'll be a martyr, and martyrs are dangerous. He will probably be every bit as dangerous in death as he was in life. I don't see how this improved the world. And I am just so fucking sick of guns.

It's not that I'm never against killing dangerous political leaders. The world would have been a better place if certain dangerous but powerful people had been killed (right now Netanyahu comes to mind). But I think that it's genuinely more constructive to figure out other ways to temper or undermine their power than to resort to violence--I really just think that works better. And of course the true goal should be to keep these people from gaining power in the first place.

I don't know, y'all. Things in my country just seem very, very dark right now and this doesn't feel to me like this made it any brighter.

Nine of the Best Apps and AI Tools for Home Gardeners

Posted by Jeff Somers

Whether it’s a thumbnail-sized urban oasis or intended to get you through the zombie apocalypse (or something in between), keeping a home garden is a lot of fun—and a lot of work. It’s worth it, of course—aside from the natural beauty and the fresh veggies you can get from a personal garden, there are a host of physical, emotional, and mental health benefits associated with gardening. That assumes your garden is a success, of course.

If you have a brown thumb and your gardening efforts always turn into a floral graveyard, you might not be experiencing those benefits. If that describes you, the missing ingredient to your gardening triumph might be technology: There are a lot of apps and AI tools out there that can help you with everything from planning to maintaining your garden. If you’re struggling to keep things green, check out these apps and AI-powered tools you can use in your own home garden.

Planning tools

If you’ve never seriously gardened before, or just need some assistance planning it all out in terms of space, species, and layout, there are several tools that can make this process simpler for you:

  • VegPlotter is a simple, straightforward app ideal for folks who find complex, feature-packed tools to be difficult to use. You create a simple layout of your garden, select what you’re growing there, and the app tracks a calendar of growth and harvest times for you. It will even warn you if you don’t have enough space for your chosen plants. Cost: Free for up to 40 plantings; $22 or $35 per year for more options.

  • Planter is an alternative garden planner that’s easy to use—you just drag cute little pictures of plants onto a grid representing your garden. Planter automatically decides how many “squares” of your grid each plant needs, which makes it easier to lay everything out. Cost: Free, $24.99 per year, or $99 for a lifetime plan.

  • Garden Planner is a good choice if you need to plan out more than just plants, as it allows you to include pathways, fencing, and other landscaping features in your garden plan. It’s not as user-friendly as VegPlotter or Planter, but it’s relatively straightforward. Cost: $48 after a 15-day free trial.

  • Smart Gardener is a great tool if you want to feed yourself and your family from your own vegetable garden, as it will quiz you on how many people are in the household, what zones you live in, and other basic info to help you plan what to grow and when you’ll be able to harvest it. Cost: $15 for 90 days; $40 for a year.

Reference

  • Seed to Spoon offers a lot of tools for planning and caring for a garden, including a robust companion plant reference that makes it stand out. The app shows you which plants will thrive together, making it simple to fill up your garden with a harmonious selection. Cost: Free version includes 10 free plants, $4.99 for 1 month, $24.99 for 6 months, and $46.99 for a year.

  • PictureThis is a simple, but powerful, plant ID tool. With just a quick photo of any plant, you’ll find out what you’re looking at, an assessment of its relative health, and information about its care. This is a necessity if you’re taking over an existing garden, if you’re “ungardening,” or if you wake up to discover invader plants insinuating themselves into your planned space. Cost: Free.

Journaling

A garden is a living thing, and all living things change over time. Keeping a garden journal is a crucial aspect of gardening, as it lets you track what you’ve grown, what yields were like, and what works and what doesn’t in your specific little spot. While you can certainly keep track of all this using a variety of tools (some of the other apps listed here include this feature, and there’s always old-fashioned pen and paper), Gardenize is a simple garden journal tool that makes it easy to input information about your garden. It automatically timestamps everything and makes it easy to see the impact of your choices over time. Cost: $8.99 for one month, $3.74 per month for 12 months, or $6.66 per month for three months.

All-in-one

Sometimes you don’t want a bunch of apps that do specific things—you want a single app that does everything:

  • Seedtime is a comprehensive gardening app that many gardeners swear by. It includes just about everything you need, from a harvest and planting calendar generated from a list of what you want to grow to planning, layout, and journaling tools. It even tracks your inventory of seeds, fertilizer, and other supplies and lets you know when they expire or need replenishing. Cost: Free for the limited version, $7 per month for a basic subscription, or $9 for an unlimited subscription.

  • Growbot AI is a general AI tool—it’s basically ChatGPT but specifically for gardening. You can ask it anything you need to know and get an answer back in natural language, including specific numbers and timelines, if applicable. It’s only available on iOS, however, so if you’re an Android user, you might be stuck using a more generic AI chatbot for your questions. Cost: Free, or $29.99 annual subscription.

okay, one more work post this week

Last October, I posted about how the new CEO looks like Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica. Now that I have met her in person (for a certain value of 'met' -- I was officially greeted and then saw her in passing several times), I can report that it is EVEN MORE TRUE in person.

So far I have managed not to say this to the CEO's face. I feel like that would be rude? Or maybe not? I don't know; I don't look like anyone famous, so no one has ever said 'oh hey, you look like [that person]' to me. I'm already a little embarrassed that they apparently know my name; I'm not sure I want to do anything to draw more attention to myself.

But it ABSOLUTELY gives the entire workplace experience a way more surreal vibe. Like, office culture under corporate capitalism is already pretty weird. With a BSG flavor, it becomes even more 'high concept inevitable tragedy, but with space opera stakes.'

Zine Introduction (+ hello!)

Crossposting an entry from [community profile] communal_creators, if that's alright. Some background: I've participated in a lot of zines of varying organization and polish, mostly fandom, and also have helped organize a zine jam every July since 2023. I am working on a TTRPG sourcebook project with friends later on next year, so I'm doing a zine for my own worldbuilding project as a warmup.

To be frank, unformatted worldbuilding is not very interesting for anyone to read. It also isn't very interesting to work on, at least for me. My ongoing project is to lay out my low-fantasy, Chinese alt history setting in the format of a museum exhibition. There be fantastical beasts and nitty-gritty cultural stuff. My setting is not associated with any particular project other than I wanted an excuse to draw lots of gryphons and research early Zhou dynasty. I like the scaffolding of metafiction and in-universe media: ie. creating subway maps and tourist brochures for a completely fictional setting. For this project, it means multimedia with writing and art in the form of artifacts, diagrams, and information plaques. Hopefully this is enough structure to keep me interested and I can (in the future) print if I want. The particular exhibit inspirations I'm drawing from are Guanghan's Sānxīnduī and Chongqing’s Three Gorges Museum.

I'm not a historian or a curator. This made me a little nervous to start this project, but fuck it. You can just do things. For the duration of the next month, I am planning to finish the art and writing for the displays on:
  • information on 3 key historical figures
  • setting, including the specific archaeological site
  • 4 artifacts from this specific era.

I'll be treating it as a zine with deliverables. Feel free to ask about it.

But really, visit the Sānxīngduī and Three Gorges museums if you ever get a chance. They are both engaging and excellent at telling a narrative. Particularly pay attention to the way halls are laid out to introduce audiences to a concept.

2025/142: Everfair — Nisi Shawl

He had been warned, but had thought Everfair too remote, too obscure, for Leopold's dependents to seek its destruction. He had thought that because this land had been legitimately purchased they were safe. He had trusted to his enemy's basic humanity to preserve them. [p. 95]

Everfair is a steampunk-flavoured alternate history, beginning in 1889. The Fabian Society, instead of founding the London School of Economics, purchases land in the Congo as a refuge for those fleeing the oppressive, violent regime of the Belgian government and their rubber plantations. Everfair, as the new country is called, is initially populated by African-Americans and liberal whites, as well as escaped slaves. King Mwenda, whose land it was before the Belgians stole it, is not wholly pleased with the way that Everfair is run: but he and his favourite wife, Josina -- a fearsome diplomat -- are playing a long game.

Episode 2673: Bomb Fact

Aliases are fine, but often stories use really bad ones. The classic is the Sdrawkcab Alias (especially looking at you, Alucard), but there are other lazy aliases, and themed aliases such as always using the same initials. The whole point of an alias is to make it hard to figure out who you are, yet so many characters in fiction choose obvious ones.

Of course this means in a game you can go either way, depending on your sense of drama or realism.

Okay..... everyone's still not panicking or otherwise acting excited..... Not a betrayal by Babu then? I still can't think of any reason for Evil Threepio though, so there's probably something in the movie dialogue that I'm missing that would explain things. Or at least make some sort of sense for the movie. That could just be wishful thinking though; we've already had a number of seemingly nonsensical things show up already. Neat that the character managed to come back from the Sarlacc though!

Hang on. Why would Boba Fett care about any of the PCs here? None of them have met Boba Fett before, or had anything to do with Obi-Wan. Maybe that's how the comic scene is going to play out? Perhaps one of the players realizes that same thing, questions the GM/Boba on it, some more discussion happens, and then Threepio goes back to normal. Mind you, that still wouldn't explain the currently evil eyes or the droid surgery, but that wouldn't be anywhere close to the largest unexplained thing in the last 20 comics.

Hey, Americans! Look sharp, the Trump Administration is trying to play a head game on you about Covid vaccines, and it's apparently working, because I see nobody talking about this in the news or on social media.

There's a lot of complexity and chaos right now about what is available to whom and how to get it. Things are changing fast, especially on the state level. I hope to discuss it in another post, but there's one thing in particular I want to clarify for you.

As you've probably heard, week and a half ago, the FDA changed the authorization for the Covid vaccines, in a way which curtails access. The thing that people are hearing is that for people under 65 years old the Covid vaccines are not authorized with some exceptions.

That's technically correct, but badly misleading. A lot of people hear "not authorized" and stop really listening to the rest of the sentence. They hear "with some exceptions" and assume they're not likely to be one such, and won't qualify to get it, and tune right out.

To be cynical for a moment, you're meant to assume that.

But it turns out you're one of the exceptions. Probably. How can I know that?

The actual language from the FDA authorization just issued Read more [2,750 words] )

and I said to myself, sit down

To my relief, the stray cats didn’t forget me over my summer elsewhere; my morning run is now reliably interrupted by a belly-patting session with Miké-chan in the park, and one of the green-eyed cats near the nighttime junior high came immediately over to say hi when I went past, winding in and out of the fence and bonking its forehead into my hand.

How does everybody save (non-work-related) files as a rule? As with so many things I am old-school and inefficient; at the end of the month, the latest version of everything I want to save goes onto a couple of USBs, stored in different places. If it’s the middle of the month and I want to be sure to save something, I email it to myself. I never use GoogleDocs etc., everything is on my hard drive + memory sticks.

Work: Someone in a translation I was editing had come up with “adversary management,” which confused the hell out of me until I realized the intended meaning was “adversity management.” Presumably “adversary management” is a little more active…

I found a decent, simple recipe for limeade and have made it twice with very good results. Actually the first time, I couldn’t find limes in the supermarket and had to make sudachi-ade instead; even more of a pain to squeeze (it takes three or four sudachi to make up one lime), but just as good taste-wise. Lovely tart pale-green summer drink, and the kitchen smells deliciously limey as a bonus.

My mom reminded me of a piece of graffiti seen years and years ago which became a family joke: “I love grils. / [Different handwriting] You mean girls. / [Different handwriting again] Hey, what about us grils?”

Courtesy of the farmboys as usual, I learned the Chinese word for post-its (便利贴, convenient stickers) and duct tape (大力胶, really strong tape). Also 心急吃不了热豆腐, you can’t eat hot tofu when you’re fretting, roughly equivalent to “hold your horses, calm down.”
Earlier this year the actor Zhang Zixian was among the farmboys’ visitors; he’s the one whose nuanced performance as Wang Shi’an in The Rebel absolutely blew me away, and it was mind-blowing in another way to see him out of character: cheerful, comic, laid-back, with a bit of a stammer, obviously very likeable but coming off nothing like either poor screwed-up evil Wang Shi’an or one of the most gifted actors in the business, for all that’s what he is. Performers are something else.

Speaking of performance, Y and I went to Takarazuka a couple of weeks ago because they were reviving their production of Guys and Dolls, which has been one of my favorite musicals all my life. It was very disappointing on one front: the Japanese book and lyrics, dating from the 1980s, are limp and awkward and miss the point entirely more often than not, an extra shame because the original English ones are so sharp. (I know it’s a tall order to turn good English lyrics into good Japanese lyrics which are also singable and mean the same thing, but it has been done! The Japanese lyrics for the latter-day Gershwin musical Crazy For You are a masterpiece.) Also the audience was very subdued, hardly rippling with laughter even at the punchlines that survived into Japanese (“Tell him I never want to speak to him again! And tell him to call me here”), although Y figured this was just a cultural thing. Still, the dancing was very good (including the traditional Takarazuka Grand Staircase at the end), and the singing was a lot of fun: you get used very fast to the “men,” ie women playing otokoyaku, singing contralto instead of tenor/bass, and the second act in particular was riveting. This is from a much earlier production, but the staging doesn’t ever seem to change, and it gives you a good idea of what the otokoyaku sound like (Shibuki Jun as Sky Masterson singing Luck Be A Lady). Parenthetically, it amuses me that Takarazuka is obviously much stricter about policing YouTube than about B站. Also, we killed some time wandering through the theater shop looking at the vast quantity of performer headshots etc., reflecting that the gorgeously androgynous otokoyaku overlap interestingly with the occasional gorgeous androgyny of male C-pop (and J-pop and K-pop) singers, approaching from the opposite side as it were. I imagine there have already been papers written about this as a cultural/sexual/sociological phenomenon.

Music: I’ve probably posted it before, but Beethoven’s Sonata No. 32 devolves (or rather sublimates) into jazz in the middle of the second movement, which I can never resist. I’ve linked it with a timestamp here (Mitsuko Uchida’s recording, with notes on YT by the astute Ashish Xiangyi Kumar), but listen to the whole thing if you have a chance.
Also, Jiang Dunhao song of the post (because I can): his own 铁皮火车不停开, sung live sometime last year, which I find very comforting.

In purely personal stuff, I’m depressed and annoyed with myself for taking no steps AT ALL toward ever getting anything I’ve written or translated published, in spite of helpful suggestions on all sides. I’m struggling with the pessimistic feeling that it’s all pointless: I’m terrible at promoting myself (either to agents/publishers or to would-be readers), I’m probably not writing anything that would suit the publishing zeitgeist, I don’t have connections who would do the promoting for me and nobody will take on a writer cold at this point in time, I don’t know the ins and outs of the process of getting translation rights etc., I can’t bring myself to try to get a novel published through what now seems to be the typical route of short stories*, and so on and so forth. Obviously the solution is to get off my ass and at least TRY, and if I fail disastrously in terms of original writing, then to look into self-publishing, but it’s very hard to get rid of the WHY BOTHER YOU WILL FAIL (and probably poison the waters by doing it wrong the first time around) dark cloud.
*Short stories. I think I’ve said so before, but my mind just seems to work in novel lengths? I never can think of anything I want to write as a short story. I have written lots of short story-length fics, but by virtue of being fanfic they’re all kind of…within novel-length [or drama-length, you know, long-form] continuities, not completely freestanding. I don’t know. Ideas for doing something to deal with this?

Photos: Very few, because it’s been too damn hot and humid to be motivated to photograph anything. My limeade and some flowers and the balcony with sudare at sunset, Koron-chan taking her ease, and also WARNING for people who don’t like creepy-crawlies, a very elegant centipede. I thought it was a lot like Oliver Melendy’s encounter …something which looked like a tiny, elaborate trolley car. It was perched on a leaf, standing firmly on ten blunt little round feet that could have been wheels… The whole creature was a rich cinnamon brown color, and along each of its velvety sides was arranged an ornamental row of creamy scrolls., but if you are more Mona than Oliver, maybe don’t click.

Be safe and well.
