you are a writer, not a content-producing machine (Fannish Fifty #42)

[personal profile] mific posted this on the Fan Writers/Talking About Writing comm, from an original post by obsidianpegasus on Tumblr. It bears repeating - over and over - to everyone who writes (and who reads) fanfic, so I'm repeating it here.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Say it with me:

I am a writer. Not a content-producing machine.
I am a writer. Not a content-producing machine.
I am a writer. Not a content-producing machine.

It’s okay if I don’t have time to write.
It’s okay if a chapter is delayed.
It’s okay if my words come out messy.
It’s okay if I need to take a break.
It’s okay if I don’t update every week, every month, or even every year.

My value as a writer is not measured by how fast I post.
My worth is not defined by kudos, bookmarks, or comments.

I am allowed to be slow.
I am allowed to rest.
I am allowed to write for joy, not for an algorithm.

I am a writer. Not a content-producing machine.

And if anyone thinks otherwise, they can wait.

I <3 this so hard.

Unravelling the Zero Carbon Act

Posted by Idiot/Savant

For twenty years, Aotearoa's climate change policy went through a continuous cycle of governments making big promises, then doing nothing at all to meet them, resulting in targets being unmet and problems getting worse. But in 2019, in a rare act of bipartisanship, Parliament passed the Zero Carbon Act, which was meant to break this cycle. Governments would have to be upfront about what their targets were and how they planned to meet them. And to keep them honest, an independent Climate Commission - He Pou a Rangi - would advise them and review their work, making it clear to the public whether the politicians were doing enough.

Unfortunately, the current regime are climate change deniers who want to revert to the old way of doing nothing. And so they plan to end He Pou a Rangi's watchdog role over their emissions reduction plans:

Climate Change Minister Simon Watts repeatedly adamantly denied any plan to remove the Climate Change Commission's role in advising on emissions reduction plans, only for his office to two days later confirm the Government was considering exactly that.

1News can reveal the Government was weighing up whether to remove the Climate Change Commission's role in advising on emissions reduction plans — a move the Green Party says would undermine independent scrutiny of climate policy.

The proposal was part of a broader review of the Climate Change Response Act, which requires the Climate Change Commission to provide independent expert advice on the Government's five-yearly emissions reduction plans.

The 1News story focuses on the Minister's deceit, and that is bad - Ministers should not lie to the media and the public like this. But the policy effect of removing He Pou a Rangi's advice on emissions reduction plans will be to enable the government to lie to the public about the effects of its policies, while reducing a key accountability mechanism. Which obviously suits the current regime - which has removed all effective climate policy, and whose emissions reduction plan therefore will not meet its legislated targets - very well. But it seems actively harmful to us, the public.

The other lesson in this of course that there is simply no point seeking consensus or bipartisan agreement with national on this or any other issue, because they have clearly demonstrated that they are cheats and liars who will play you for a sucker. The next government should take this lesson to heart, ignore the wailing from National and its polluting, ecocidal backers, and legislate for real climate action, which drives said backers out of business and ends their destructive pollution as quickly as possible. As National has shown, its easy to smash things. So lets start smashing.

Writerly Ways

I had thoughts about this, especially after the mothman festival so you can wait til tomorrow for that. And then the storm hit. My power went out. I wrote 3K in under 2 hours (so I can see what I'm capable of and what I USED to be capable of pre-social media) and then the power came back and I saw posts about two states trying to make it mandatory that all universities have a memorial to Charlie Kirk and my brain died of the stupid. (though I hope they do it and it fucking blows up in their faces) So instead have some links while my apartment cools back down (because omg why did it hit 89 again today)

Dept. of Sunshine

Despair Sucks. Perhaps a Palate Cleanser's in Order

Even though the world is on fire and every morning brings pit-of-the-stomach dread about what the morning headlines will tell, it isn't giving up the fight to say "today I'm going to tell despair to suck it."

I realized this morning that my last couple of posts have been full of rage and frustration. Those are true emotions, but they're also corrosive in the long run - and who the hell knows how much time "the long run" comprises. So here are a couple of things I can honestly say made me smile, or things that I did that I think were fun, or good for someone.

I can't recall if I've mentioned my friend Sandy's efforts to get her and her husband, Dr. Bob, back into the house they had to leave last December because of fire. Their situation has been fraught on so many levels, and Bob and I haven't been able to help much, other than to have them over for supper and an evening away from their long-term BnB just to have time away from the whole thing. But now that they're starting the process of getting back home, we've been able to help.

They have had 1100 badly packed and mislabeled boxes of goods delivered back to their house (that's part of why their situation has been so fraught, even now) and they were overwhelmed with the prospect of unboxing everything and putting things back to rights. Bob and I have spent a few hours every day or so helping them do that; from helping them sort things into "keep," "give away," and "pitch" bags, to simple things like breaking down boxes. Boxes and boxes and boxes - and breaking down those boxes and packing garbage bag after garbage bag with the paper used to pack the boxes - becomes really important in this situation. Sometimes all Sandy needed was someone to listen as we took a coffee break, so that she wasn't simply screaming into the void.

As of today, when I walked in to help Dr. Bob and their friend Steve with more unboxing, the place is starting to look a fair bit more than simply piles of boxes. I think even Dr. Bob, who is inclined to be a glass half empty type, was feeling a little bit of hope.

They have a long way to go before the place is completely back to rights, but at least they know we won't abandon them. Their longtime friend and retired housekeeper is coming up from Birmingham to do some of the heavy emotional and unpacking lifting that's still necessary. I think they'll finally be able to call their home an actual home before the end of the year.

Earlier this week, we had the unexpected pleasure of a visit from
[personal profile] ljgeoff , who was on her way from one travel nursing assignment to another. It's been a few years since Lisa last visited us; we shared some pizza, chocolate chip cookies, and conversation, and then she was on her way. She has more energy in her little finger than I have in my entire body. She also is braver than I think I'll ever be. It was a joy to be in the same room with her again.

And finally, we've decided to give away the Keurig coffee/tea/whatever maker that a friend gave us. We are drinking enough coffee these days that we haven't used the Keurig in months. Mind you, given the increasing price of coffee, perhaps keeping the Keurig and getting rid of the regular coffee maker might be the smarter choice. Sigh.

Daily Happiness

1. For lunch today we walked up to the neighborhood independent market, which does grilling in the parking lot on weekends during the summer. Well, I guess summer is officially over as they were not set up today. :( We'd been hoping to get a tri-tip sandwich, but I guess we'll have to wait for next summer. Instead we went a few doors down to the restaurant I went to yesterday, and got another grilled cheese, this time (since we'd already been in the mood for a hearty beef sandwich) a grilled cheese with short ribs and pickled onions. It was so good! So we're two for two on that place now.

2. I had some nice snuggle time with Ollie this morning. Actually both yesterday morning and this morning. He just hopped up on my lap and napped for a while. *_*

3. This is a new box. Exactly the same shape as two other boxes we already have in the living room, but everyone is super into it, so I guess we can't get rid of this one now lol.

Forgive me a few moments of astrology talk, but I promise it's leading somewhere.

Today was a partial solar eclipse (not visible in my part of the world, but holy cats, was it felt!) and the astro-weather has been, uh... well, it's been!  And when you're in these kinds of times where brains might be buzzing less with ideas and more with static, it's important to give yourself grace if you're not "as productive" as you want to be, however that looks to you.

So make sure you take time to rest!  If you've written anything at all today, congrats!  Celebrate it and take some time to decompress.  If writing hasn't happened at all today, that's fine!  Read over a piece of your writing you're proud of (whether finished or a WIP) and do something fun as a reward for being kind to yourself.

Riddle me this

Why is it necessary to label cat litter as 'vegan'?

I mean, it's made from either cellulose (paper, corn, rice, soy) or clay. Most common additives are baking powder or charcoal. Most fragrances are plant-based. Is there a type of non-vegan cat litter available?

Black and white and so friendly and tiny, too. Definitely not a feral!
