Moonday to Sunday

As we all know, the ancient Greeks and Romans had a 7-day week, where they named the days Moonday, Marsday, Mercuryday, Jupiterday, Venusday, Saturnday, and Sunday. The Romance languages mostly preserve this (except they call Sunday Lordsday, dies Dominica), but turns out that the Germanic languages have the exact same paradigm (except for Saturday): Mániday, Týrsday, Óðinsday, Thorsday, Frīgsday, Washingday, Sonnaday. Máni is the personification of the Moon, Týr a god of combat (like Mars), Odin/Woden a psychopomp (like Mercury), Thor the god of thunder (like Jupiter), Frīg as Venus was known as Frīg's star, and the Sun is, well, the Sun. Though note that English has Saturday in a closer Romance loan, rather than a descendant of laugardagur (launderday?).

Anyway, that's neat, and you probably already knew that. However! I encountered the Japanese 月曜日, and saw the 月 and thought "Huh, Monday is Moonday in Japanese as well? What a coincidence."

Not a coincidence at all, actually! Turns out the Chinese discovered the planet-named 7-day week in the 4th century AD, whence it was transmitted to Japan before 1000 AD and used for astrological purposes before being promoted to the official week naming system as part of Westernization. Thus modern Japanese has 月曜日, 火曜日, 水曜日, 木曜日, 金曜日, 土曜日, 日曜日, where 月 and 日 are the Moon and the Sun, and the days between named for the planets, each of which is associated with a Chinese classical element: Mars with fire 火, Mercury with water 水, Jupiter with wood 木, Venus with gold 金, and Saturn with earth 土. Chinese has replaced them with numbered days, Week 1 Week 2 etc (though Sunday is still 周日), but in Japanese, they remain. So if you're ever going WTF at the Japanese (or Korean!) names of the week, just blame the Ancient Greeks!

Any time we can slow stuff down and humanize it, even if it's only for a little bit, it feels like a victory.

Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and hot.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.  The honeybees had drained the small metal birdbath again.

Disappointed

I got booted out of Idol: Wheel of Chaos last week, by the "poisoning" twist that's part of the game (and the chaos) this season. Very sad about that. :( I'd rather get voted out than be murdered sideways, and I know the other Poisonees must feel the same. :( I wrote a good story for a hard prompt, too, so I would have expected to survive another week based on it! ETA: Wait. Back IN the game again, thanks to another spin of the Chaos wheel! WUT.

That was also the same day my Hawaii sunburn started to peel, but I've still got some of those vacation feelings going. What a wonderful, relaxing time. We stayed at the Waikoloa Village Hilton, with a room overlooking the bay, the lagoon, and the (surprise!) dolphin area. Just sitting out there and watching everything was fun, and it also helped me get a sense of what was happening with the tides (which sometimes made the chairs and umbrellas by the lagoon inaccessible). I snorkled in the lagoon quite a few times, and saw lots of Moorish idols and parrot fish and yellow tangs, and even a spotted ray and a trumpet fish! Mostly, I read and people-watched and listened to the waterfall across the way. Lovely. I spent a LOT of time by the lagoon overall, and that's how I got sunburned three different times. I'm pretty sure I've managed to avoid sunburn in Hawaii entirely as an adult, up until now. Because it's always burning, never tanning...

My sister recommended that resort (she and her husband stay there often), and it was truly gorgeous. Possibly too big for HalfshellHusband, though? He struggles to walk long distances (foot pain and an arthritic back), so that was way more walking than he would have liked. If you started from our hotel, and walked the long way across the bay to the other side of the resort, I think it would be a distance of about 6-8 blocks. At least the Kona airport was small, compared to the ginormous one in Hololulu that he struggled to get through last year. It's not just the distance or the pain, either—the combination of heat and humidity in Hawaii make it hard for him to breathe. Still, he soldiered on as he always does.

With all of that reading, I have some books to recommend:
Blob (A Love Story), by Maggie Su - A feckless young women encounters a gelatinous blob in an alleyway behind a bar, and takes it home. Soon, she is attempting to mold it into the perfect boyfriend.
The Shamshine Blind, by Paz Pardo - Only the second sci-fi novel I've ever read that has the physical effects of color as its main theme (the other is Jasper Fforde's "Shades of Grey"). This book has a noir feel to it, with the main character hunting down fake pigment distributors and illegal uses of color in a dystopian world under Argentinian dominion. (!)
Secret Dead Men, by Duane Swierczynski - Del Farmer, a reporter-turned PI, tries to solve the mystery of his own murder with the help of the souls of the dead he has collected (and now houses in the Brain Hotel inside his head).
Gone, Baby, Gone and Prayers For Rain, by Dennis Lehane - This entire detective series is good, but these two books are both extremely well-written. It would be hard to say which is better, though I'll give the nod to the second one.

Soon to come: TV recs. But in the meantime, how have you all been?

Habit Tracking: Week 37 (September 07 - September 13)

Honduran white bats, sticker by the Atomic Pixies.

This was a long week (despite being a short work week for me) and a rough one. The shooting at Evergreen High School ("minor" as it was, considering, and how awful is that?) impacted me more than I expected, having interacted with the two named students. I didn't know them well, by any stretch, but it still hit me hard. The endless discourse around Charlie Kirk's death has also been completely exhausting. The stuff from early in the week - more back and forth getting the AC fixed, a walk in a neighboring city to see an uncommon bird - seems like it was way longer ago now. We had a model show to end the week, which was tiring but a nice break. Having a long weekend was a good thing.

Goals for the week:

  • I did finish reading The Dead Take the A Train
  • I started reading Tidal Creatures
  • I did not finish (or even work on) the WIP intro
  • We did finish the model show prep, even if it was last-minute
  • We went to the model show on Saturday
  • I stopped by mom's earlier in the week to collect caterpillars, and Saturday to drop Bella off
  • I went to the bank
  • I ordered birthday gifts for Taylor, though they aren't supposed to arrive until day-of :/
  • We got a bit of outdoor time
  • I did write up my September writing goals
  • We paid rent, finally getting an accurate amount
  • I still haven't put my laundry away
  • I did go buy fruit flies
  • I didn't work on my reading page

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 4/7 - I took Saturday off
  • Household Maintenance - 7/7
  • Physical Activity - 2/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 1/7 - over 500 words
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 3/7
  • Personal Writing - 5/7
  • Other Creative Things - 2/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - I finished The Dead Take the A Train, and started Tidal Creatures, I also caught up on Dracula Daily/Re: Dracula, Alex and I read more of Duma Key, and I started reading a short story called Swelter
  • Attention to Media - 6/7 - Sunday we watched the Ravens game (which was good for the first three and a half quarters), then watched two episodes of The Paper; Monday we watched two eps of The Paper, and then an ep of Great British Bake Off, then a documentary I don't remember; Tuesday I caught up on Re: Dracula, we watched a couple eps of Dateline, then finished the last couple eps of The Paper; Wednesday I listened to Re: Dracula and we had news coverage in the background; Thursday had some documentaries in the background; Friday watched Great British Bake Off, and then The Most Hated Man on the Internet
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 4/7

(I've got way too much to catch up on.)

In which life is a series of multiple choice questions

I began an A-Z (ish) reading challenge involving going into a library fiction section and choosing an available book from the next letter. I decided to prioritise the shortest books I haven't read in each section out of laziness and got off to a good start with Jane Austen juvenilia (Lesley Castle, and "Catharine, or The Bower"), but today's B offering was Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach, lol, which I've managed to avoid reading until now. I browsed further for a book outside my usual reading zone and picked Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum because most of the other translations were either terminally literary or murdery or both. I mean, I enjoy occasional excessively literary fiction but more at the experimental end than the navel-gazing middle. Anyway, I can't decide which to read so it's up to you (you're going to engineer a dead-heat so I have to read both, aren't you?).

ALSO, when I emerged from the stacks, squinting into the pleasantly warm yellow air, a new-ish hatchback, with the windows rolled down, cruised past banging out Born Slippy which, ok, it was big hit at the time and I understand nostalgia but rly? Although it's definitely hatchback muzak: "Mega, mega, mega going back to Romford / How am I at having fun?"
