‘I gave up my house and turned it into a cat sanctuary where 100 cats live in the present’: Homeowne

Posted by Laurent Shinar

Selflessness in the name of felines is most certainly an act of kindness that could land a person at the entrance to those pearly gates if they do so exist. And the kindness and selflessness of the woman that this story is about is certainly of that kind. For where some people might say that they will go to volunteer at a shelter, or heck even set up a shelter or rescue service, this woman said nuts to that I'm going for the whole enchilada.

So when she got her hands on her first ever house, which happened to come with 15 stray cats as standard, she felt it was only right to give them the space that they deserve, after all they came with the house. But as word got out, the need for her help grew and so did the space in her home for her rescued clouder of cats. Until one day, she herself had to move out to make even more room for her growing number of feline guests. What a purrecious soul she is.

'I just want to do what's best for him even if it means having to say goodbye': Pawrents struggle ov

Posted by Sarah Brown

This whiskered tale is full of heartstrings and pawsitivity. Over six years ago, a scrappy little balcony bandit started showing up outside this couple's apartment. What began as the occasional food drop quickly turned into a full-on routine with daily meals, a cardboard bed, and eventually a deluxe cat condo. They even gave him a name. And let's face it, once you're naming a cat, you're owned.

When they moved within the same complex, the couple worried he wouldn't follow. But like any good feline GPS, he padded right back to their balcony, happily reclaiming his turf. For four years, he's been their unofficial third cat. Independent, elusive, and master of the midnight door-scratch.

Now, with another move looming, the claws are out on what to do next. One partner wants to scoop him up and bring him along, while the other worries he won't adapt and could wind up lost or worse. It's a classic case of cattitude vs. comfort zone. Whatever they decide, it's clear this balcony buddy has left permanent paw prints on their hearts.

National Consumer Panel

I've participated in the National Consumer Panel since January 2014, which involved scanning my grocery purchases and doing the occasional survey in exchange for gifts cards and such. Unfortunately, I've finally had to break down and delete my account due to their continued transphobia.

When participating, you have the list the demographic information of the shopper, and the only gender options listed are Male or Female. Which, you know, is an issue if you're legally nonbinary. Especially since X is a valid gender option on US passports as well as driver's licenses in many states. In addition, they have an annual demographic survey each year where you provide more information about yourself, and - once again - the only gender options are Male or Female. If you want to participate, you have to intentionally misgender yourself, or you cannot proceed forward through the survey.

I've been reaching out to the National Consumer Panel about this issue since 2021. In both 2021 and 2022, my messages were acknowledged, and they point-blank stated that the issue was that their parent companies (NielsenIQ and Circana) dictated what gender options they were allowed to list.

In December 2022, I received the following email:

That email? Was the last communication that I received from NCP one way or another. I've continued to reach out each year when the annual demographic survey goes out with only Male and Female as the gender options listed, but I haven't received any response from NCP at all since 2022.

It's very clear at this point that the blatant transphobia of forcing nonbinary individuals to misgender themselves to use their site is intentional and won't be changing. Maybe it is the parent companies that are to blame, but the fact that NCP sent me an email in 2022 saying they were working to fix the issue and then ignored every single message that I've sent since then? Well, that says a lot. If nothing else, they're the ones who chose to simply stay quiet.

At this point, I'm done. I deleted my account earlier today, and I sent them an email making it clear why I've done so. With the current state of the world, I can't in good conscience continue to participate with an organization that's not even pretending to try to not to be transphobic.

I honestly doubt this post is going to do much of anything in the grand scheme of things (and the same's true of the thread that I posted over on Bluesky). Still, I wanted to at least make a public post about it just in case it lets even one person out there know that the National Consumer Panel shouldn't be trusted if you're LGBTIQA+.

Fast-food workers who had bizarre days at work: 'A man demanded an absurd amount of bacon for a chil

Posted by Remy Millisky

Fast-food workers of the world, you have a thankless job. It's an important one, though — people eat a lot of fast food, and someone's got to serve it to these hungry customers. It's always baffled me how some customers seem to save up all their weirdness for their visits to fast-food restaurants. Some are totally impolite, which is just par for the course for a job like that. But others are just very weird, and those are some of the stories we're going to be reading about today. We've got weird coworkers, strange bosses, and just surprising workplaces in general.

For example, one person who worked at a Dunkin realized that if you put Munchkins through the toaster they'll turn into balls of flame! That's the exact kind of fact your average teenage worker would be delighted to find out. One person had a coworker who loved to flip ice cream cones upside down to delight customers… until the day he realized why that wasn't such a hot idea. Plenty of people had memorable stories about the people they worked with who entertained them day in and day out, intentionally or not!

After you have a laugh at these fast-food hijinks, read about the tech CEO who discovered a job candidate used AI during a job interview (!!!) and refused to hire them: "It was dishonest… We will not be moving forward with the hiring process."

Whisker-Filled Wonderland of Pure Cat Chaos Made of 23 Feline Funnies

Posted by Ayala Sorotsky

We don't think anyone can explain cat logic. Does cat logic even exist? Listen, it's weird thinking about how your cat can nap on your lap, curled up like a cinnamon roll, purring like a lawn mower, looking all snug and cute - and then not one minute passes and your cat is running on walls, parkouring over all your furniture, zooming all over the house like they're possessed by some feline demon. We cannot explain it, but cats will be cats, no matter what.

We bet that if you look at your cat at this very moment, you can see them doing a Very Cat™ activity that draws out a reaction from you ranging from "aww, what a cutie patootie" to "when did I agree to adopt a demon?". Both are valid responses to cats. We still love cats with all our hearts, and nothing will change that - just like nothing will change cats from being the most cat they can get.

And since cats are just the way they are, it's no wonder all their wonderful whisker-filled chaos is on display wherever we go - because they rule our lives, and they rule the internet. Cats are the undisputed monarchs of the online sphere, the kings and queens of internet comedy, the emperors of memes. Cat memes rule the internet, just as cats rule our lives.

Sharks center Macklin Celebrini returns to ice after dealing with illness

Posted by Curtis Pashelka

SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini was on the ice again Sunday morning after he was held out of practice the previous two days with what was described as an illness.

Celebrini did skill work with development coach Mike Ricci and San Jose Barracuda forward Donovan Houle early Sunday before the start of the fourth day of training camp.

Celebrini will not be in the lineup on Sunday when the Sharks host the Vegas Golden Knights at SAP Center in the preseason opener for both teams.

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said Sunday afternoon that he hadn’t received a report about how Celebrini felt after getting on the ice, and it remained unclear if the 19-year-old center would rejoin the Sharks for their next scheduled practice on Tuesday. San Jose’s next preseason game is on Friday at home, again against the Golden Knights.

“We’re just kind of easing him into it,” Warsofsky said of Celebrini.

Thursday, Celebrini was sent home by the team’s medical staff after he reported not feeling well following the first day of camp. Celebrini did not skate on Friday or Saturday, but was at the Sharks’ practice facility and attended team meetings.

Before having to miss Friday and Saturday’s practices, Celebrini was the centerman on a line with Will Smith and Jeff Skinner on the wings.

Celebrini, 19, is coming off a spectacular first season as he finished second among all rookies in both goals (25) and assists (38) and was tied for second in points (63). He also tied for the NHL rookie lead with eight power-play goals, ranked second in both even-strength points (41) and power-play points (22).

LUND RETURNS: Forward Cameron Lund, who was injured during the Golden State Rookie Faceoff earlier this month in Anaheim, participated in the Sharks’ first training camp session on Sunday morning in a non-contact jersey.

In the Sharks’ game against the Anaheim Ducks on Sept. 12, and with just over six minutes left in regulation time, Lund was about to receive a centering pass from Filip Bystedt near his own blue line when a high hit from Ducks defenseman Will Francis laid him out, knocking him out of the event. The hit started a fracas on the ice, with defenseman Braden Hache immediately dropping the gloves with Francis.

Lund, who played 11 games with the Sharks at the end of last season after he signed his entry-level contract, had been skating in recent days, including Saturday, when he and a group of other injured players worked with Ricci on the ice in a separate small group.

“Obviously, it sucks missing a couple of days,” Lund said. “But the good thing is, it’s not long-term. I got to get out there today, which is good, and in the next couple of days, I should be out of the yellow jersey.”

Warsofsky said his practices on Sunday were among “the hardest skates that I’ve probably put on, but (Lund) did not look out of place. You could tell he put in the work this summer.”

Please check back for updates to this story.

Fannish 50 Challenge 2025: Post # 29: Illinoiis Fandom (political)

I'm a proud born-and-bred Illinoisan, a State where there is so much opposition to the Orange-Tinged Dictator. A number of you may know of the ways that my State's Governor -- JB Pritzker -- stands against the Dictator. A number of you may know that Illinois was the very first State to pass legislation opposing book bans in libraries. A number of you may be aware of the Dictator's recent direct threats of war against Chicago with his AI-generated image of Chicago in flames and his "Apocalypse Now" references. A number of you may already have seen Illinois Senator Karina Villa confronting ICE agents and telling them "This is my city. Get out of my city...." but I want to make sure that she gets seen and hopefully this video gets spread.

Saturday at Capclave

Perhaps I should have taken the fact that the hotel's Starbucks' espresso maker was broken Saturday morning as an omen for the rest of my day. I was able to get caffeine by running across Rockville Pike to the Chateau again, but it was a very “??” and “!!” start to the day.

Naomi and I were both on a panel at 10:00 am entitled “Benevolent AIs. The moderator, Wendy Delmater Theis (formerly of Abyss & Apex), went down the row and introduced herself before the panel, which was fine. She asked everyone who they were and seemed very confused by my general existence. I’m not sure if it was the horror of, “Oh no, a name I don’t know how to pronounce?” or (something I’ve been getting on and off here, which is) "... and you are?”

I am admittedly sensitive to the latter. Much more than when someone flubs my name. It’s not a real microaggression against me when someone isn’t sure if my name is LIE-duh or LEE-duh or ends up calling me Lynda or Lydia. I’m a white lady. You mispronouncing my name is not a reflection on how you feel about my ethnicity or my heritage. It’s annoying to me when fear of mispronouncing my names stops people from calling on me on a panel or saying, “You, the end,” rather than trying and failing to say LIE-duh. But, like, it's just something I live with.

However, the whole long stare of ‘hmmm, you have said you are an author, but clearly you are one I have not heard of. Whelp, I guess that means you’re not important” is something that feels much more like a microagression of a sort. I’ve been slowly getting used to it happening. It was always a crapshoot outside of my regional conventions if anyone had heard of me, and this has only increased as time wears on.

But, while I did get ‘the long stare’ and the ‘uh, YOU, at the end’ from our moderator, that wasn’t the real problem with this panel.

First, as expected with a panel about AI, it was somewhat unclear if we’d be talking about LLM and other so-called AI, like ChatGPT, that are operating in the real world as we know it right now or if we’d be talking about fictional versions. The panel description didn’t actually help. Neither did the moderator. Worse, she was one of those moderators that really just wanted to be the one talking. She’d pose questions, let us throw out a couple examples--scold us if we were not precisely on the format she set out (film, TV, books, series) and… I don’t really know because at some point my soul left my body after she shut down Naomi for starting to talk about the AIs in Murderbot Diaries (ART and Mickey) because those were AIs from a book series, not standalones and we were on standalones. Like, wow. We were in the book category why the distinction and is it really something to get cranky about? Whatever. I checked out.

It wasn’t bad in the “someone brought up Hilter” kind of bad (that would be my next panel-panel) but more a “WTF was that?”

Next up wasn’t exactly a panel, it was me interviewing Naomi. And this went fine--quite well, actually.

Scott Edelman, who published my first professionally published short story (in SF Age back in the 90s), chatted with me in the hall for a long time before the interview. We were waiting for Naomi to get out of the panel she was on and just sat on the hallway couch chatting about this and that. Scott did a lot for my ego by apologizing for not knowing that I was going to be at this convention as he would have had me guest on “Eating the Fantastic,” as well. (This is the podcast where he interviews writers over meals that I linked to in yesterday's post). He noted that couldn’t just slot me in because he reads everything the author has written in preparation and, I don’t know if you know this, gentle reader, but I’ve written and published sixteen novels. That would be a lot to just read in a matter of hours. And maybe he was lying, but 1) I don’t think so. He genuinely seemed to remember me. And 2) even if he was, it was a nice thing to say.

The interview was great. Naomi is easy for me to talk to, of course. We’ve been friends for decades.

At some point there was a run to get sandwiches for lunch at the local grocery store and.... then came the panel from hell.

I seem to have been cursed with moderators who really had points they wanted to make on Saturday. This panel was called “For the Love of Evil” and, ostensibly, was about villains we should hate, but secretly love (or perhaps that we love to hate.) I had a nice little list of names like Killmonger, Moriarty from Sherlock, (Milton’s Satan?), and Loki. Things started off well because Capclave is an East Coast con and East Coast cons have the culture of “list all your books and awards” and so I got a big laugh when I noted that ,when I won the Philip K Dick Special Citation for Excellence, I sent out a press release that said, “Lesbian wins Second Place Dick” (which I really did!) But, as things turned out, that might have been the high point of the panel?

Things went along for a while pretty well, but then for reasons known only to our mod, Larry Hodges, he decided that he needed to monologue about how various real life villains mapped to fictitious ones. This was already a bad idea because he was talking about Stalin and Mussolini (neither of which he could pronounce) and... of course, we could see where this was going.

Inexorably, he gets to Hitler, whom he likens to Thanos because “he thought he was doing what was right for the world.”

The author next to me, Diana Peterfreund, dropped her head to the table.

I full-body disassociated.

For me, it was a kind of decision paralysis. I was torn between grabbing the mic and just saying “no, no, no” until Larry stopped talking or faking my own death/dropping the the floor and marine crawling out the door.

Meanwhile, of course, Larry is still making his case that Hilter was just trying to right the wrongs of the world (in his own head, like how a villain thinks he’s a hero, but still, Larry, there’s no justifying this, so please just STOP.) But he didn’t stop, he kept talking, and so thank GOD for Diana who finally does manage to grab the mike and say, “SO! Change of subject, Loki sure is hot!” This allows me to finally return to my body and I grab my mike and say, “So hot!” We go back and forth like this until the bad feelings go away.

Why do people feel the need to EVER bring up Hilter? I feel like unless you're comparing the current presidential administration to the Third Reich, just don't.

Anyway, Loki is not exactly what we talked about--Diana managed to be far more articulate, but I no longer remember anything other than SOMEHOW we managed to literally wrestle the panel back to something akin to squee about villains. And when I say “we,” I mean Diana, with some support from me. The panel was saved. It even, miraculously, snaps back to true and we end with some nice questions from the audience which aren’t just “WHAT THE HELL DID I JUST WITNESS?”

I did have some great things happen on Saturday, like the chat with Scott E. and running into some other folks I know like Carolyn Ives Gilman and Walter Hunt. I was the “comealong friend” to Naomi’s Scintilation Discord group dinner, which was delightful. Then, just before retiring upstairs, I watched the WSFA award ceremony which was nice in the classic small con award way, even though Marissa Lingen didn’t win.

No further mishaps.

But, the ones I had? Doozies.

Thanks to all the trauma, I retired early last night. As noted previously, I just don't really function all that well in social situations after dark any more. Naomi was apparently out until quite late. I woke up long enough last night to have a nice chat with her about it all (and catch her up on all my trauma).

This morning we'd been invited to breakfast with Joe and Gay Haldeman at 9 am. The two of them are, of course, quite wonderful so we had a lovely time talking to them both for several hours over eggs and toast.

Today things wrap up in the early afternoon, so I've been put in charge of finding something fun for us to do this evening. Tomorrow we're still in DC for some sightseeing, and then it's home Tuesday afternoon.

‘Little Women’ playwright finds story’s joy and passion in a tempestuous time

Posted by David John Chávez, Correspondent

Hearing Lauren Gunderson speak about Louisa May Alcott’s semi-autobiographical novel “Little Women” is to hear the clarity and purpose she possesses in building her adaptation.

Gunderson, recently named the most produced playwright for the third time by American Theatre Magazine, didn’t have to search very far to find blatant connections between the Civil War era that Alcott depicted in her 1868 novel and societal struggles in today’s United States.

“The story is not lace and doilies and sitting comfortably by the fire,” Gunderson said. “They’re at war, their father might not come home and there’s a plague next door that’s killing the community. These are really high stakes, and these girls are growing up in this moment of American division and crisis, the real stress-testing of humanity all around them.”

Gunderson’s “Little Women” is making its second stop in a series of rolling world premieres nationwide. TheatreWorks Silicon Valley is producing the play, directed by artistic director Giovanna Sardelli and featuring a who’s who of Bay Area acting talents. The show runs Sept. 24-Oct. 12 in Mountain View.

The novel is a coming-of-age tale about the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. The four go through significant life changes as they navigate their way through the Civil War in 1860s Massachusetts.

On the surface, Gunderson might seem to be a playwright who loves digging into the specific nuances of classics; her Jane Austen-inspired “Christmas at Pemberley” trilogy is one example. But while proper young ladies wearing proper dresses might be the dominant image that comes to mind for this genre, there’s much more immediate motivation that bubbles to the surface.

“It is not a small thing that these girls are up against, and how they manage it is with radical love and radical joy,” Gunderson said. “They live within a radical community of people who are saying, ‘I will not leave your side, know you and celebrate you as you are.’”

Bay Area actor Elissa Beth Stebbins is working on her second Gunderson adaptation, taking on the role of Jo, the second oldest and the boldest of the March sisters. The excitement and challenge of interpreting a strong spirit means that Stebbins is free to explore Jo’s abundance of personality, despite the audience not witnessing much of what Alcott built in her novel.

“There’s something for me around these characters that come from books–that they’re very whole,” Stebbins said. “They often change a lot and are really dynamic, and we get to see them in the books in a lot of different situations. Even though…a lot of that doesn’t make it to the stage, there is all this richness behind it and lots we can lean on to know about our characters.”

When it comes to the modern sensibilities of the story, Gunderson did not have to search far in the book to find parallels between the division that exists in the country. It’s something Stebbins also gravitated toward when revisiting the book, which she read in elementary school.

“One of the things that feels really present for me is the presence of conflict, this sort of constant loss of people and the loss of security,” Stebbins said. “What really has been ringing out for me in this production is the poverty of the March family, and the way they find joy through the pain and difficulty of poverty. It feels so real when we look at the decisions we have to make today about where we spend our money, and how we keep finding joy and passion in a time that’s so tempestuous.”

Gunderson has found many layers of modernity inside the story, but the novel’s bent toward unapologetic feminism paid many dividends. Crafting new sensibilities with classic works continues to be a critical aim of her work.

“There’s a whole patriarchal dismissiveness of women and girls in general, but there is a reason why she calls this group of girls little women,” the playwright says of Alcott’s novel. “it has a lot more backbone of feminism than it might appear. There is a grit to it that is perhaps not immediately recognizable but will be instantly seen when the audience gets into the theater.”
