Be the First! Flash Round IV

[community profile] bethefirst is a challenge that invites participants to create the first fic for an otherwise fic-less fandom (terms and conditions may apply), and the results of an autumn flash round just went live!

Be the First! Flash Round IV Collection

It features a whopping 30 fics based on a wide range of media, with a great spread of categories and ratings. You can also find creators'
fandom promos for introductions to some of the canons.

I'm still making my way through the collection, but everything I've read so far has been fantastic, and I'm compiling a list of new-to-me canons to check out. I definitely recommend manually browsing, if you're interested, since not all of the fandoms have been canonized as AO3 tags yet.

Ceramics Progress

Contrary to my expectations, I managed to (effectively*) finish my yarn bowl on Wednesday after all!

Two un-fired clay works; on the left is an upside-down yarn bowl, on the right is a fish balanced on its lips.

(Click for a larger version of the photo.)

Here's the yarn bowl and also the fish, in their no-longer-current glory; they're in the "greenware" state in this photo, which means they haven't been fired even once yet. I'm pretty sure they're undergoing their first, or "bisque", firing this weekend, and that I'm going to get to do some glazing on Monday, but I'd need to check the schedule to be sure 😂

In any case, I'm pretty pleased with them so far! I'm looking forward to the fun things I'll get to do with them in the glazing stage 😁

I have been informed that the placement of the crochet hook holes and yarn catching wave on the bowl make it look "distressed", and that "it looks like it was dropped and having a crisis about it." I'm sure it'll appreciate all my hard work in the end, though 😜

* I did end up having to stop by very briefly on Thursday afternoon to touch up the base, but that's nowhere near as much work as I was expecting.

Needlepoint Update

As you may have seen, I started trying out needlepoint this year. The fruits of my first attempt, a bookmark, can be seen here. After that I completed two more bookmarks, which came out better, and I posted photos of those here.

I've now completed a couple of additional bookmarks, one which is for my sister because she asked for one after seeing photos of what I completed. :D

Now that I've kind of mastered the bookmark, I decided to try something harder and am currently working on a pillow, which is coming along.

Photos of the 2 additional completed bookmarks and the current status of the pillow are posted below the cut. :D

The Marvels

I haven't got the Disney channel so I haven't seen... so much MCU stuff by now, but, I decided to keep going with the DVDs I do have and watched
The Marvels.

That was fun :-)
... but Captain Marvel was *good*, and this was fun, so it wasn't quite the same game?

I was thinking though, if you have One Character in the title, you can follow a tight emotional arc and stick with something simple like Get Back Up.
But when you have three you have to sort of match up the Theme and then plait them together?
And that is Harder.

But the movie did that, and successfully I felt, just sometimes it took a break from being a plait and hung little flags on it and that seemed... a very stylised choice? Read more... )

So I did a quick google for a fact and I saw a lot of people saying The Marvels was rewritten, saying it should have been rewritten more, saying it should be more like Captain Marvel. And I am not saying that. It was doing an interesting thing when it was trying to fit the three of them together. I'm not quite sure it 100% worked, but it was a better thing to try to do than to just sequel one of them. Like the point was they needed each other's perspectives. It was a good try at a good point.

I am however unsure it was the best possible version of itself.

That I will still have a think about.

Did I get dropped into Gilmore Girls for the past twenty-four hours or something?

I impulse-made pasta dough in the stand mixer last night, and then today, I:

  • went to the farmer's market, where the good sourdough vendor was in attendance and recognized me, and I also picked up an apple tasting flight (Macoun, McIntosh, Honeycrisp, and Gala) and honey for Rosh Hashanah Tuesday, as well as a dozen gorgeous multicolored eggs, a purple cauliflower, and various other vegetables;
  • meandered around the neighborhood in perfect early-fall sunshine, following the treasure map of local yard sales, and one house was giving away their stuff, including an adorable little pitcher and stationery and stamps and linen napkins I'm going to turn into embroidery projects;
  • did some gardening and met up with a friend and her kid, and hung out with them for a few hours and made play-doh shapes;
  • came home and rolled out half the pasta dough and made ravioli and took a hot bath.

And now I'm going to drink some mint tea and lie on the couch and read a book and cuddle my cat. Tomorrow there is a block party and more fresh pasta to roll. This all feels suspiciously idyllic.

Current Crowdfunding Choices

Heikala, whom I've followed on tumblr for years, is crowdfunding her latest art book.

The Art of Heikala: Realms of Imagination

If you ever saw pictures of my bedroom repaint project, Heikala's prints featured prominently in the gallery walls I created. I think I originally found her while looking for watercolor videos on YouTube, and her process videos are lovely, soothing things.

The Kickstarter is in its final week. There are a number of stretch goal bonuses unlocked, all of which are automatically included as part of a book purchase. If you like dreamy, cozy fantasy slice of life art, I recommend her work very highly.

Taskmaster s20e2 and part 6 (and last) of the Worldcon write-up

Taskmaster s20e02 -- More, with spoilers )

Ania was apparently doing doodles in the downtime between tasks, and has doodled all of her tasks and the various in-studio tasks. She has been sharing these on her Insta, and they are also being linked to on Reddit: episode 1 and episode 2 so far.

I think I'm going to just finish TMNZ s6 after the current main TM series wraps up, like I did last time. 3 TM episodes + 1 rewatch with [personal profile] lunasariel proved a bit much outside of bingeing mode. I know who won TMNZ, and that also made me less excited to finish it, so it'll keep, and make the wait for the next thing (NYT, presumably, although according to people who went to s21 studio recordings this past week, CoC 4 is going to be filming studio in November, so that's probably also coming soon).

*

And finally, let me finish up the Worldcon write-up before I embark on the next set of adventures.

Earlier parts are here:
- part 1: Tues/Wed,
- part 2: Thursday
- part 3: first part of Friday
- part 4: rest of Friday, first part of Saturday (Ada Palmer motherlode)
- part 5: Saturday, Hugo awards and related thoughts

Sunday, Aug 17: panels and Dealer Room )

And that was the last of my panels for Worldcon -- and also the last of ALL panels for Worldcon, because I certainly got my membership's worth of panels :D

Dinner with queenlua )
Hotel and Monday morning flight )

A few final photos )

So, yay, a very successful Worldcon, despite the bonus Covid infection. No regrets on any panels or events I attended, just low-key frustration with not being able to be in two places at once, and warm "next time" feelings about hanging out with [personal profile] tabacoychanel in person for the first time, Doing a Con as part of a group that was living together, and getting to see/chat with authors/people whose stuff I didn't make it to.

Seriously tempted to do it again next year in LA...

Employee finds out coworker is pocketing all of her tips rather than pooling them like the rest of h

Posted by Lana DeGaetano

Tipped workers understand that their living is essentially the tips they receive from customers. That's probably why they're complimenting your hair, your jacket, and the old, banged-up pair of shoes you've been wearing since five Easters ago. Hey, the game is the game. Don't hate the player, as they say.

Some restaurants and cafés continue the tip pooling system that most tip-forward establishments have abolished for an unknown reason. There are pros and cons to pooling tips, but most infamously, the staff who do nothing get the same payout as a dedicated worker who has been breaking their neck to make customers happy during any given shift. So, when a staff member pockets all of their tips and keeps them for herself instead of contributing to the tip pool, what do you do?

Commenters suggest that the employee take this up with their boss, but I think there's a better way to even the score… Shall I say? I think you're picking up what I'm putting down. Scroll below to read the full story and see why tip pooling is honestly one of the most illogical things on the planet.

Fannish 50 Challenge 2025: Post # 28: due South fandom: annual Ray Vecchio Day

September 21 is considered to be Ray Vecchio's birthday and is celebrated annually by due South fandom as "Ray Vecchio Day". This is a day to show RayV some love by posting a RayV-centric fanwork or meta or recs related to Ray Vecchio or David Marciano (tag it as being for Ray Vecchio Day 2025).

Posting to the collection is now open at Ray Vecchio Day 2025 Collection on AO3 and a master list will be assembled on September 28th.
