Last night I finished Becky Chambers' The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, a sci-fi book about a motley crew of spacefarers who "drill" wormholes to enable rapid travel across space for the diverse galactic alliance known as the GC. At the start of the book, they are offered a bid on a particularly difficult, lucrative job, and can't resist taking the bait.

This should be (another) lesson to me in not going all-in on a creator because I've enjoyed one of their works. I loved Chambers' To Be Taught, if Fortunate, and I've heard plenty of internet praise for The Long Way, so when I saw it at the bookstore recently, I dropped $20 on it readily. If I hadn't, I probably wouldn't have bothered finishing it.

First - if you picked up this book looking for the femslash, it's barely there, and it's a lot more friends-with-benefits than romance. The other two romances in the book get a lot more attention. If what you really want is F/F romance, it's not really here.

This is a character-driven book with barely a plot, which wouldn't be a problem if the characters were interesting. As it is, they are functionally interchangeable: a crew of people who are all optimistic, friendly, emotionally open, painstakingly polite, and obsessively well-intentioned (except for the one guy who's a Jerk, who exists to be a jerk whenever the scene calls for someone who needs to be less-than-fanatically-polite or there's a chance for Chambers to squeeze in another instance of his being a jerk, even when he's technically right). There is no character growth to speak of; none of these characters changes at all between the start of the book and the end. There's no complexity to anyone.

While I was walking outside at 4 am, like I sometimes do, I got to see the skinny crescent moon with a bright Venus as an orange arc of light beneath it. Wasn't expecting it but I was glad to get it. (Usually when there are night sky events, my area has clouds or rain, not the clarity we had last night, with more stars visible than usual.)

DEPECHE MODE: M is a cinematic journey into the heart of Mexican culture's relationship with death, framed by the iconic performances of Depeche Mode during their 2023 Memento Mori tour. Conceived and directed by award-winning Mexican filmmaker Fernando Frías, the film captures the band's three sold-out shows in Mexico City, attended by over 200,000 fans, blending concert footage with interpretive interstitials and archival material. DEPECHE MODE: M celebrates the band's global influence while delving into the profound connection between music, mortality, and Mexican tradition — a sacred meeting point where pain, memory, joy, and dance dissolve into one another, blurring into something profoundly and beautifully human.

i post about: i'm into a lot of things but what i end up posting about are monthly periodical-types of the music i discover and listen to (free for anybody to access) and the general musings and feelings of an anxious college guy (behind an access lock). i might someday make a dedicated post about history or politics or literature but i rarely feel like i have any meaningful contribution to what could be said. that's a very broad characterization but check my about me on my profile for a slightly more detailed synopsis

my hobbies are: my whole life revolves around music, more or less :] i listen to music extensively (squid771 on last.fm and rateyourmusic), collect vinyl records, and go to college studying sound engineering (i'm a senior!). i have an off-again, on-again recording project that i'll someday release something under. i play guitar, i'm an untrained singer, and i play various keyboard instruments. i always try to watch movies but usually that means i'll just gather a bunch, watch 2 in one night, and then go 6 months without watching another. i'm trying to read more (5 books read this year; infinitely times more than the past couple of years), i'm big into history (currently researching the george mcgovern 1972 campaign, and concurrently the history of how the word socialism/communism got such a negative connotation in the U.S.), and i like to walk around at night, or in the rain, or both. i try to appreciate the little things. i want to write, and learn esperanto, but i've never found enough consistent motivation to try either

my fandoms are: i haven't really considered myself to be really big enough on anything to be part of a fandom, but some of my favorite bands/artists are fishmans, stereolab, broadcast, nick drake, elliott smith, the radio dept., the field mice (all of sarah records really), brian eno, yo la tengo, ichiko aoba, and many many others! i could talk about music for days and days. as far as like forms of media go i'm big into the trails series (games 1-5, trails and crossbell; cold steel ruined the franchise), deltarune (haven't played undertale but i generally know what happens by osmosis), off, team fortress 2, and disco elysium; and then cowboy bebop, samurai champloo, NGE, general 2000s adult swim-core type stuff for anime

i'm looking to meet people who: i put a post up here about 6 months ago when i first started this account and i did get a lot of responses but nearly all of the people that replied to me aren't active anymore. i'm looking for people to really connect with and are in this site for the long haul (or at least for a while). i'm not too picky about sharing interests but having mutual appreciation for something always helps. the main thing though is that i'm just trying to make more friends :]

my posting schedule tends to be: whenever i feel like there's enough going enough in my life to post about something. this is usually like 2 to 5 times a month. i do tend to get wordy in my posts for what that's worth

when I add people, my dealbreakers are: i'm a very vague socialist so i'm not particularly chill with MAGA types or people who are just unnecessarily rude but i think there's like only 2 people on this site with those beliefs anyways

before adding me, you should know: i don't really comment much but i read everything that's posted. i get in my own head about responding to/posting comments and not feeling like i have enough to say. but i'm always looking to talk to more people and come out of my shell
i'm very depressed and mildly autistic and can be in my head a lot of the time, so the posts behind my access lock can get mopey and despondent. i'm doing the best i can to grapple with my emotions and the world around me so a little bit of empathy goes a long way. we're all going through something

Chinese Actress Yang Caiyu Becomes a New Mom

On September 20, actress Yang Caiyu made a public announcement on social media that she has become a mother. The 32-year-old actress shared a video showcasing her fitness routine when she was pregnant, along with a heartfelt message: “So, no matter the time, always be the best version of yourself. I am grateful to be a mom.” Yang Caiyu can be seen performing strength training exercises while visibly pregnant.

Yang Caiyu’s pregnancy timeline began in February 2025 when paparazzi first captured her in a tender moment with her now-husband, Zhang Xiangrong, along with a visit to a hospital, igniting rumors about her pregnancy. By April, her baby bump was noticeable during a trip to Japan. In July, rumors circulated that she gave birth in a high-end post-natal center in Hong Kong, although this was never confirmed until today.

Yang Caiyu’s husband, Zhang Xiangrong, is said to be the grandson of Zhang Hua’an who owns a leading company in China. Zhang Xiangrong, a graduate of Columbia University, is responsible for the family business’s international operations. The couple reportedly met in late 2024 at a charity event. In early September, they shared their first public couple photos while on vacation in Indonesia. When some questioned her marriage status, Yang Caiyu responded subtly with the word “Oh?” Her reply, coupled with her photos, seen as a graceful response.

Home from six days in hospital with a plan designed not to land me back there any time soon, I have been passed into the care of Dr. Hestia, who is already carrying out her duties with enthusiastic ministrations of purr. I have washed my hair for the first time in a week. I have eaten food prepared by my family. I napped like a stone in the late afternoon, which I will have needed since my regimen for the foreseeable involves a schedule of medications I cannot let slide even when some of them require me to be awake at hours I have preferred my entire life to spend unconscious. My calendar is inevitably full of further maintenance, but I am truly looking forward to an increase in conversations that have nothing to do with the monitoring of my vitals. Mostly I am marrow-tired and vague with new chemistry and glad to be home in my own clothes and drinking water I don't have to ring anyone to bring me in bed. I was not expecting and delight in the gift of a plush harpy eagle that arrived while I was away.

1. It's the weekend! And I was able to come home early today, too, which was nice. A lot of the tasks I was working on this week are now in the hands of the IT team for the next step, so while I had a few little things I could do today, I just went home after my afternoon meeting around three or so.

2. We got two multipacks of the new Across the Spider-Verse Lego minifigs in the mail today. Carla's had some good luck with the last few sets of blind box minifigs and got hardly any dupes (I think one set was actually no dupes at all) but this time we did get a few.

If anyone wants these figures, I will ship them anywhere in the US for free. Just let me know.

3. Gemma loves being in Carla's desk chair when it's pushed under the desk. It's so secret.

Because the day was boring and I'm still unwell so have fiction

Title: Something to Make My Heart Beat the Faster

Summary: Charlie has decided to make a more in depth infomercial for the hotel. Alastor’s input is to add a little melodrama to it as well to showcase the idea of self-sacrifice as a path to redemption, volunteering Husk for the short movie. Angel can’t wait and he has ideas of his own for how this should go. He’s the movie expert, after all.

Rating: mature

Notes: Written for spikegirl58’s six word challenge. The six words were Wet, Implied, Thirsty, Dress, Grumpy & Surprise. These words couldn’t have been more perfect for a story inspired by (and spoilers for) the S2 teaser if they had tried. Also written for the allbingo prompt of rum and the lyrical titles bingo challenge for the prompt a pre-1950s song. I chose All the Things You Are, originally written for a 1939 musical by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammestein and covered by many. This version if by Ella Fitzgerald.

This is definitely a spoiler for that little teaser trailer for S2 so read or not accordingly if you don’t want even a hint of spoiler.

I am once again playing Wrath of the Righteous.
On Core, where the minimum requirement is to do everything you can do, every buff for you even for an easy fight.
I think I built the Knight Commander badly. I'm just shooting things with a crossbow because it turns out witch spells are mostly debuffs and I keep not throwing them. It is. Not good.
I know I could have built the others better.
It's kind of mostly working right now but.
if this grinds to a halt because I needed to make different choices many hours ago that is so frustrating.

Also I discovered that if you choose Demon even once in order to get an Achievement the neathers are completely screwed. They have no voice now. They're just killing stuff. And getting killed. So much.
Basically this Knight Commander is going to feel So Bad Forever. Lose temper once, watch intelligent beings apparently lose their minds. So so bad.

They chose Angel at Drezen but they have a lot to make up for.

Also I have played this game so often I am completely forgetting which bits I have done on this play through and which are still to do. Game journal is only thing keeping me in the right timeline. Time loop much?

I should sleep. Sleep is of the good.

I am so far behind... T_T

Waaaaay back at the beginning of the month, we went back to Castlewood Canyon, wanting to see the rest of the "Cave" trail, which had been closed earlier in the season for nesting turkey vultures. The turkey vulture nesting was definitely a success, judging by how many of them we saw!

As always... Bella!

And we got to see a couple deer! I know that we have just... so many deer, but I'm still always happy to see them. This one was obviously young, still with little fawn spots, though it was most of the way grown.

Sixteen more pictures:

Wandering up the short stretch of road between the parking lot and the trailhead, there were some milkweed that were absolutely COVERED in aphids. But they also had lots of happy ladybugs having a massive buffet, haha.

Looking up from lower on the trail.

The rock wall that was roughly where the trail was closed off last time. I like being able to see the space behind the front "section" of the rock.

We were able to continue on, now that the nesting closures have been lifted.

It wasn't... quite as impressive as hoped. Still didn't find the alleged caves, haha. The cliffs are really pretty, though.

Unfortunately the sun was at just the worst angle for all of these pictures looking up at the cliff, haha. But I liked the dramatic dead tree and the tall bit of the rock.

Again with the sun making it look like a dream sequence.

Turkey vulture!

Something was drilling into this fallen log, ha.

As we were heading back, Alex looked over to the side, and...

The little deer! Mostly grown, just a little small, but still with white fawn spots! So cute. (Yes, this is almost the same picture as above the cut.)

And a second deer, nearby the first.

Bella was very excited to see the deer. (I think I've mentioned before, but she does enjoy "watching" TV sometimes, especially animal programs. There was a wildlife rehab show we used to watch sometimes, and her favorites to watch were seals and deer, haha.) She doesn't seem to want to chase them or anything, just wants to go see them, ha.

That second deer, staring back at Bella. It didn't seem overly concerned.

Speaking of successful turkey vulture nesting... Not sure how easy it is to see, but aaaaall those little black specks in the sky are vultures. SO MANY.

A fairly nice chunk of a shed snake skin. Probably a bull snake... but not nearly as impressive as the one my mom found last weekend!

Another ladybug on milkweed.

A very impressively active wasp nest over the bathrooms, ha.

Bumblebee on a sunflower!

Still more trails to explore, but glad we got to do the rest of the sort of "horseshoe" of this trail, and glad we had a chance to get out for the day.

Yike.

[Derek] Thompson is very skilled, a latter-day slightly-less-talented version of Malcolm Gladwell, who can make the upper class chatter. For instance, he recently wrote about how young people aren’t partying or drinking much anymore, which is a perfect topic for a 15 minute conversation between two lawyers in DC.

Matt Stoller calls the burn ward.

This is from a longer article on an internet slap-fight between Stoller and Thompson over the former’s critique of the latter’s “abundance” bullshit; basically neoliberalism repackaged as “hey wasn’t this better than fascism tho?” to sell back to a gullible “socially liberal but politically conservative” professional-managerial class. For all that I do have problems with Stoller (specifically, as a populist he’s too fast to get into bed with the far right so long as they make vague anti-monopoly mouth-sounds), I think his critiques here are worth a read, if only for the drama.

Who Knew There Were Such Things as Pepper Spray Balls?

Yeah, not me. But there they were, being shot on Friday morning - by a rooftop sniper, no less - at protestors outside an ICE detention center in Broadview, immediately west of Chicago. In addition to the pepper spray, the ICE thugs tossed tear gas canisters at the protestors. They slammed people to the ground, and at least one protestor, activist and political hopeful Kat Abughazaleh, said that one of these public servants told her "Your First Amendment rights are on the sidewalk" as he did some of that slamming. Stay classy, ICE.

The protestors have been at that facility every Friday, and this is, as far as I can tell, the first time the thugs have escalated this. It seems to me to be clear; they hadn't been properly escalating the situation in a way that Dear Leader needs in order to pretend that the Chicago Hellscape™ requires him to send in the military, and on Friday they got their marching orders.

I do believe I've mentioned this before; they are motherfuckers.

Do you routinely have part-worn clothes around?

View Answers

Never. Clothes are on my body or in the laundry.
1 (3.2%)

Maybe one or two items
15 (48.4%)

Half a dozen outfits in various stages of wear at any given time
13 (41.9%)

My entire clothing stock is spread around my living space in a quantum superposition of dry laundry not put away and various stages of wear
2 (6.5%)

Do you think it's totally normal to have multiple part-worn items lying around the bedroom etc?

View Answers

Absolutely
11 (34.4%)

It's not ideal but mostly, yes
13 (40.6%)

I wouldn't say normal, but people do it
5 (15.6%)

Why... why would you do that
3 (9.4%)

What's worst

View Answers

Washing clothes every wear
15 (48.4%)

Wearing clothes for multiple days
1 (3.2%)

Not tweaking your outfit every day for the exact circumstances
1 (3.2%)

Clothes
14 (45.2%)

(I wear most of my clothes once before washing them; jumpers and trousers mostly go for a week before washing; at any given time I have both home and outside trousers in use and I might have a jumper around that I'm wearing intermittently, but that's the maximum "part-worn clothes lying around" I get).

Here we go again. After hiking the price of Xbox consoles earlier this year, Microsoft just announced it is already raising prices again—the second price hike in four months. Now, even Microsoft's cheapest console, the Xbox Series S, will cost at least $400.

As someone who got an Xbox Series S for $150 a few years back, that stings. (Granted, I got a really good deal. Still.) Microsoft is blaming "changes in the macroeconomic environment" for the new prices, so read into that what you will.

How much more expensive will the Xbox be?

Here is what Microsoft's consoles will cost after the new pricing takes effect:

Keep in mind that even after Sony's own price hikes, U.S. gamers can still get a PS5 for $550 and a PS5 Digital Edition for $500. Yes, Microsoft's consoles technically start cheaper, but the Series S is more comparable to the original Nintendo Switch than an Xbox Series X or a PS5, and $400 is a lot to pay for it—although the original Switch also got its own price hike just last month, and the OLED model of that machine will also now run you $400. If you're comparing apples to apples, though, Sony's console is about to be a good bit cheaper than Microsoft's.

Gamers who prize physical media will be the hardest hit, as to get a disc drive on your machine, you have to opt for a non-digital Xbox Series X, which means you're going to get a bigger price increase than your peers. The last jump bumped the Xbox Series S up by $80 and the Series X by $100, while this one increases the Xbox Series S by $20 and the Xbox Series X by $50.

On the plus side, Microsoft said pricing for controllers and headsets "will remain the same," which isn't how it went last time around. Maybe that's a hint at the overall console strategy: Microsoft has been investing a lot in cloud gaming recently, and you technically don't even need a console to play its games. In that case, upping pricing on its hardware is maybe a bit less risky for the Halo folks than the God of War ones.

And I haven't even touched on Microsoft's most expensive machine. If you're an Xbox loyalist and you want to go all-in on its 2TB Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition, that will now run you $800, a $70 bump in the price tag. Honestly, at that point, you could probably just get a PC instead.

There is something you can do about these price increases, even if it kind of feels like giving in to a ransom: They won't go in effect until Oct. 3rd, so if you were still on the fence about getting an Xbox, now is the time to act. You'll still have to deal with the price hike from May, but at least you'll save between $20 and $70.
