another five things make a post

1. I find it funny-sad that I still compose my thoughts like a LiveJournal Dreamwidth entry, but I never get around to actually posting them. My mind goes super blank at the sight of a blinking cursor and it's a bummer.

2. Like the rest of the Internet, I have seen K-Pop Demon Hunters and the soundtrack has been on repeat ever since.

3. I do need to booklog a recent reading experience, which went from "hmm, this YA book could explore its themes better if it were written for adults" to "if this YA book had been id-tastic, balls to the wall, OT3 incest-y space fantasy for adults, I could have ignored the numerous plot holes in favor of Vibes."

4. Keeping up with a mature fruit tree is a part-time job! Thank goodness everyone in my family likes peaches. Fun fact: applesauce muffins made with peach sauce = delicious.

5. I have been doing a bad job at going to bed at actual teacher bedtime, so I should... do that.

*giggling*

I finally figured out the CSS to put my favorite Rodney gif as my sidebar! (Credit to prurientpuddlejumper on Tumblr for the gif)
I'm now a very happy Volk.

The cardinals' tea party

There is a cardinal pair in our yard, and I love them very much. I drew them having a cup of tea.

cenzontle = northern mockingbird (Mimus polyglottus)
pájaro cardenal = northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis)

Computer stuff and Starsky and Hutch

Slept late and then got up and had breakfast and coffee. Then I put in a rather expensive Shipt order.

While I was waiting for that to be delivered, I did more stuff with the new computer and the old one. The major thing was getting the printer hooked up to the new one, and I was successful in that!

After the Shipt order was delivered, and I put it away, I went late to the Starsky and Hutch creative work session. I got some writing done (One of the things I did earlier was move the incomplete things I've been writing to the new computer) and had a lot of fun chatting.

We finally closed somewhat after 6:00, and I then took the time to change and clean up the kitty litter. I also formally unplugged and put away the old computer, and moved the new one to the spot on the coffee table where the old one was.

Then I Teamed the FWiB. Again we had serious trouble connecting, but again we were finally able to. We talked until 8:30, and then I got off and called Middle Brother. He is fine, looking forward to labor Day tomorrow.

Then I made dinner and ate, and finally went into the bedroom. I called the Kid, and was pleasantly surprised she actually answered. We had a nice conversation. I asked her about my oncologist visit on the 17th, but just as I suspected, now that she's working she can't take me. LIRR and Uber it'll have to be.

Got off, and played solitaire on the phone until pet feeding time, and now here I am.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The Starsky and Hutch fandom.

3. Got the printer hooked up.

4. The Kid.

5. Middle Brother is good.

6. Labor Day tomorrow.

Just one thing: 01 September 2025

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

QOTD: On art and its relationship to the future

“Great art is somehow already in the future, showing us a place we haven’t arrived at yet. Not just to entertain us but to make us grow.” — Jan Younghusband, in Loaded: The Life (and Afterlife) of the Velvet Underground (Dylan Jones), p. 173.

they've turned aside our stories of the gentle fall

The bbq yesterday was fun! Baby Miss L continues to be a character - she's a little awkward but she manages to get up and down steps now. In fact, she stood on the steps and was like, "Jump! Jump!" and we were like, " um, no, no jumping off the steps!"

Anyway, there were a lot of desserts, but the strawberry cake was enjoyed. It smelled fantastic and tasted good too.

In other news, I did the August recs update earlier:

[personal profile] unfitforsociety has been updated for August 2025 with 12 recs in 2 fandoms:

* 11 Batfamily and 1 Batfamily/Spider-Man crossover

Beneath the sun.

Picking up a new fandom used to mean picking up a new icon. It turns out I already had one. I'd thought it was nice looking and atmospheric with no knowledge whatsoever about the character in it, and to no one's surprise, I managed to pick out my favorite without even trying.

Going from MASH to Top Gun to Friday Night Lights is something where I could easily pull out a through-line beyond that it's a trio of ensemble casts working within and against the rigid structures they're living in, whether or not it's by choice. Something about maintaining a sense of self and self-worth both externally and internally, but I'm only about halfway through the first season. I know that it ends well, but not how it ends, or how it gets there, and I'm enjoying the process quite a bit.

There's no word for the feeling of watching something and being hit with the thought, "So that's where that icon comes from!" Sometimes it's reading and getting to a quote, sometimes it's a fraction of a moment caught up in a 100x100 square. But since the experience isn't unique, simply highly specific, I might a well just call it "fandom."

Clarke Award Finalists 2012

I will be too busy to post tomorrow.

2012: O2 offers free wifi to multitudes, which I only now realize may be have been referenced in Kingsman, researchers determine that despite a century having passed, the Titanic remains at the bottom of the Atlantic, and in a glorious celebration of the effectiveness of the modern British educational system, doctors warn Britons not to drink liquid nitrogen.

28 Pawsome Pictures of Cats Showing Off Stupendous Stretches That Defy Physics

Posted by Sarah Brown

Cats and stretches are basically a love story written in slow motion. One moment they're curled up like tiny cinnamon rolls, the next they unfold into a majestic, spine-arching yoga pose that screams, "Behold my supreme flexibility!" Watching a cat stretch is a masterclass in grace and laziness simultaneously. They'll reach their paws forward, extend their claws like tiny rakes, and arch their back so perfectly it could make a contortionist jealous. Every stretch is a full-body extravaganza, from the twitch of their whiskers to the curl of their tail, with a little meow thrown in for dramatic flair.

Sometimes the stretch ends with a theatrical flop onto the floor, as if the exertion was simply too much for mere mortals to comprehend. Other times, they'll transition seamlessly into a kneading session, using their paws to press imaginary dough like feline bakers of relaxation. These moments prove that cats have perfected the art of stretch first, conquer later. A cat mid-stretch is a living reminder to hoomans to pause, limber up, and approach the day with elegance, one luxurious paw at a time.
