Welcome to the return of the Lyrical Titles bingo event! It will run September through December, though entries will be accepted later.

The challenge this time is bingo, using song lyrics as titles according to the prompts on generated bingo cards. This is a low-stakes, personal challenge, of course; there's no penalty for not finishing or running late.

Link to the AO3 collection for this event. I know with some of our events there were some issues where the collection would not come up automatically in AO3's collection field, but if you use the full name of the collection (LyricalTitlesBingo2025) it should work fine even if you need to manually type in the whole thing.

Prompts:
The following are the prompts that the bingo card will be generated from. Let me know down below if you want a card, and if you want any prompts specifically excluded from it (a card needs a minimum of 24 prompts, but that's the only limit on number of exclusions). Feel free to request a new card at any time through December 2025, even if you've already received one.

Rules, Guidelines, and FAQ:

All works must be your own and not previously posted.
All works must use either the title of a song or a portion of its lyrics as the work title.
Works have a minimum wordcount of 100 words.
Please indicate the song title and artist in each entry for this challenge. You're not required to link to the song, but feel free to do so if you want!
Work text should be under a cut or linked offsite. Please indicate any warnings in your post.
You can begin working on the fics at any time, but please don't post them until September.

What kind of works are allowed?

All fandoms and original work are allowed. Works must be your own and not previously posted, but do not need to be exclusive to this event - they can also be used as entries for concurrent events. This is a writing focused event, and there is a minimum wordcount of 100 words, and no maximum wordcount.

How many fics do I need to write?

For a bingo, 5 prompts in a line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). You can do more if you like, or even go for a blackout (all 25 prompts).

Do the songs/lyrics I pick need to be in English?/Can I translate non-English lyrics?

You can use songs from any language (aside from the "Song in a language other than English" prompt). Titles/Lyrics may be in their original language, or you may translate them if you wish. For that matter, works can be in any language as well.

Do the lyrics need to be incorporated into the work?

No, this event is focused on titles, lyrics do not need to be used in the work itself.

What counts as a "Meme song"?

Any song that's used as a meme (past or current), such as "Never Gonna Give You Up" - Rick Astley, "Angel" - Sarah McLachlan, "All Star" - Smash Mouth, etc. Basically, if there's a "Know Your Meme" page for it, you can consider it a meme song.

What is meant by "Song that isn't available on mainstream digital music platforms"?

Anything that's not available on Spotify, Amazon MP3, iTunes, etc, or uploaded to Youtube by a record label. If it's only on Bandcamp or uploaded to Youtube by an independent artist or random channels, that's fine and can qualify for this prompt. Same if you can purchase the physical vinyl, CD, or cassette from Amazon, that's fine as long as it's not available digitally.

What is meant by "Song from a concept album/rock opera"?

A concept album or rock opera, is an album where the songs are not independent of each other, but instead tell a story that progresses across the album, such as with Pink Floyd's The Wall. Does not need to necessarily be in the "rock" genre.

What is meant by "Chart-topper"?

Anything that is or has been at the top of a music chart. Does not matter which country or year.

Do the "song with ___ in the title" and "lyric with ____" prompts apply to both song titles and fic titles?

No, prompts 29-34 apply to the song selection only - your fic title does not need to include the requirement for the song title. Prompts 38-46 are the only ones with restrictions on the title of your fic, but do not limit the song selection (other than it must have lyrics and, for 41-46, include one of the two words somewhere in the lyrics).

Does the Free Space mean I choose from any of the above prompts, or any song/lyric at all?

Any song you want!

Have fun!

Any questions, comments, or suggestions? Please don't hesitate to ask below! Feel free to tell everyone what album you're planning on using, if you want!

The bbq yesterday was fun! Baby Miss L continues to be a character - she's a little awkward but she manages to get up and down steps now. In fact, she stood on the steps and was like, "Jump! Jump!" and we were like, " um, no, no jumping off the steps!"

Anyway, there were a lot of desserts, but the strawberry cake was enjoyed. It smelled fantastic and tasted good too.

In other news, I did the August recs update earlier:

[personal profile] unfitforsociety has been updated for August 2025 with 12 recs in 2 fandoms:

Picking up a new fandom used to mean picking up a new icon. It turns out I already had one. I'd thought it was nice looking and atmospheric with no knowledge whatsoever about the character in it, and to no one's surprise, I managed to pick out my favorite without even trying.

Going from MASH to Top Gun to Friday Night Lights is something where I could easily pull out a through-line beyond that it's a trio of ensemble casts working within and against the rigid structures they're living in, whether or not it's by choice. Something about maintaining a sense of self and self-worth both externally and internally, but I'm only about halfway through the first season. I know that it ends well, but not how it ends, or how it gets there, and I'm enjoying the process quite a bit.

There's no word for the feeling of watching something and being hit with the thought, "So that's where that icon comes from!" Sometimes it's reading and getting to a quote, sometimes it's a fraction of a moment caught up in a 100x100 square. But since the experience isn't unique, simply highly specific, I might a well just call it "fandom."

It is the weekend. Whew.

Fri - adulting. Follow up Dr's appt & updoot in meds but everything trending good, no other problems. Mailed stuff. Bundled insurance to save ~$200/yr. Farmer's market!

The weather has cooled into False Fall, which I will take, since even though Second Summer is surely waiting, it means we are off Hell's Front Porch.

Sat - adulting? Home improvement store with my father. Lunch with [personal profile] purplehellebore for one last bit of birthday. (I guess I am finally older?)

I want to set a goal for myself for [community profile] smallweb September, as far as archiving goes, but idk what yet. I would like to get things archived... (ETA: goal of 'archiving some stuff' set, lol)

Working on Starfall again, and I guess I'm ready to try painting my IIBB project. I know I'm running out of time there. ^^;; Humidity continues to thwart my ass but maybe I can start hand-painting some small bits and see how it goes.

And I'm going to post this before I decide not to bother. IDK why posting has gotten so something, but I suspect increasing General Universe Fatigue.

Have to write this down so I don't forget again, and I thought it might be interesting to someone else.

It's rare that I'm reminded of something from the past that I'd forgotten.

I was watching a video about department and grocery stories of the past, and they mentioned that Safeway was one of the first places to use self-checkouts. It triggered a memory of a vacation I took in California. I went into a Safeway to pick up some things and was confronted with self-checkout for the first time (they weren't a thing yet where I lived). I now remember how alien it felt to me, like what kind of bizarre things does Cali have?!, and how I wasn't quite sure what to do with them. LOL. I believe the store was somewhere around the Malibu area.

It's fun to regain a forgotten memory!

It's being a perfect Labour Day weekend, first time in living memory: not too hot, not too cold, deep blue skies, occasional white clouds. So a pity I stayed in all yesterday, hiding from the air show, and only went out for a massage today. But did read a murder mystery in which, amusingly, the murderer was Emma Woodhouse near as dammit. I notice this time that Mrs. Elton is appalling, not merely because she's appalling, but because she abrogates to herself position and privileges that Emma thinks are hers by right. Umm yeah, 'a disposition to think too well of herself' indeed. But I'm not sure Austen means that in a social sense as well as a personal one. Maybe Austen thinks Miss Woodhouse of Hartfield really should be the queen bee of the village. Lord, but the 19th century English were as nice and finely graded in their social ranking as the Japanese, though at least in England you didn't have to decide which form of which verb to use with which people.

Granted that female hysteria is a running sub-motif in the book, I'm still of two minds about Miss Bates. I hate talkers because I hate to be talked at. Talkers take the position 'I want someone to talk at, you're going to be it, and what you want doesn't matter.' Drives me batty. But Miss Bates is always in company and is always talking at everybody, which maybe mitigates it somewhat? but still. If she knows it gets on people's nerves, why doesn't she just stop? At home I can imagine she'd drive Jane up the wall. Highbury is criminally forebearing when it comes to selfish horrors, like Mr. Woodhouse. And that, I assume, is also part of the class system?

The massage today did that odd thing where it makes my bad knee worse,  so I will see if I get to laundry tomorrow, either at home or at the laundromat or both. As also the back yard with its vines and unwanted bushes. Thursday will rain, which may start the long rains of autumn,  so must be done soonish.

Slept to noon for no good reason and dreamed of being in Florence, at a hostel, trying to wash my underwear while some ill-natured girl hogged the washers or wouldn't give me change or something. I was down to my last two pairs of underpants and asked the woman who ran the hostel, who was our business coordinator from the daycare, where I could buy new ones. But underwear was the monopoly of an Italian noblewoman, a Marchioness who wouldn't let just anyone buy underpants. That was really not worth sleeping in for.

Media roundup, August

Metal from Heaven, by August Clarke:
In an industrializing fantasy setting with a horribly oppressed labor class, a lesbian highwaywoman seeks her revenge. Reading this was roughly like being hit over the head, so much was happening. It was quite satisfying and the whole hung together, but it picked up and abandoned complete genres as it went. I'm not sure its politics fully held together, but it sure was a ride.

Where the Axe is Buried, by Ray Nayler:
A revolution brews in a world where the West is ruled by AI Prime Ministers and the Federation is ruled by the President, who maintains his grip on power by transferring his mind to new bodies. Very meaty, though no individual idea was especially novel, it was put together in a satisfying way. I liked solving the puzzle of who was pulling the strings and the larger plot, but despite its ostensible focus on systems, it is very much a Great Man type of story. Really enjoyed!

The City in Glass, by Nghi Vo:
The story of a demon who loves a city, told over centuries. A beautiful read, but not too much substance. Well, it was still satisfying as a story of grief and moving on, but because of how brief each described snapshot is, it felt less substantial than it ought to have? I enjoyed this, but found it forgettable.

Semiosis, by Sue Burke:
Pacifist colonists escape the war and ecological disaster on Earth for a distant planet, and the story of the colony and the alien life they encounter is told by one character per generation for seven generations. The science is pretty bad and not consistent: if no Earth plants/animals can survive, why are humans the exception? Why not try to bring some samples over? And then after all the detail about how the biochemistry is different... it's similar enough that they are largely affected by drugs the same way. I also wish it dug more into the difficulties of pacifism or how specific culture is (the prohibition on eating the dead is not universal even on Earth...). Basically, while the story itself was satisfying and I really enjoyed the conceit of the generations passing, I wish it were more than it was.
PS: If you're worried about reproduction on the new planet and only have frozen ova/sperm for reproductive technology, why not have way more woman colonists in gen one?
Spoiler CW: there was two paragraphs of on screen rape that came out of nowhere

Gauguin (game): A sudoku like game that I enjoyed for being a bit tricky to figure out. I was searching for puzzle-y games to play while nursing, and went through several similar type games (Tents and Trees, Star Battle) for being too easy... I wanted to like Cosmic Express or Mini Metro for this, but they require too much movement during gameplay. Games like Two Dots and Candy Crush get a little too same-y since they aren't solvable the same way, and games like Rummikub and Azul are too solvable when played against the computer. Basically, I'm too picky, and I fear the end result of this is that I really need to get into Tsumego...

Weird Al @ The Forum 8/30/25

Carla wanted to see the opening act and we decided to get dinner at the venue, so we got down there fairly early. We had seats on the floor, since I thought that would be easier/more comfortable for Carla. As it turned out, the entrance to the floor area was fairly near where we parked, and we entered on the side where our seats were, so it was pretty convenient.

I'm not sure if they had more options for food upstairs (I've never eaten at the Forum), but the area where we were just had ready to eat food in warmers that you bought from an Amazon Go space that was sectioned off from the rest of the room. We got a pizza, which was pretty tasty for just being out on the warmer, and took it to eat at our seats.

The opening act was Puddles Pity Party, who I was not familiar with, but Carla knew and liked. He was a good fit for Weird Al, since he's also a comedic singer. His original songs were fine, but the highlight of his set (and possibly the whole night) was when he sang the Gilligan's Island theme song while a fanvid of Kevin Costner's Waterworld played onscreen. That was then followed by a Kevin Costner fanvid (with clips from everything he's ever been in) set to My Heart Will Go On. It was pretty great tbh.

The break between the opening act and main act wasn't too long, which was nice. When the main show started, they had Al coming out from backstage on screen, and when he was going through the hallways in the back, it showed not just Puddles, but also Jack Black, who was in attendance (sadly he never came on stage, that would have been cool).

I don't know a whole lot of Weird Al songs, but I do know many of the songs they're parodies of, and in general it was just a really fun show. He had a lot of clips between songs with fake interviews with celebrities and stuff. I was surprised that I knew almost all the songs in his polka medley as it was one with songs from the past few years.

At one point he played a clip from Weird: the Al Yankovic Story, which I had been aware of when it was first announced that Daniel Radcliffe would be playing him, but then had pretty much forgotten about, but the clip was so funny we decided we should watch the movie soon.

We didn't end up staying for any of the encores. I looked at previous nights' set lists to see what they would probably be and Carla was fine with leaving, so we got a little headstart before the parking lot got too jammed.

Definitely a fun act to see, even for someone who's not already a big fan.

1. Dear Care and Feeding,

My husband and I have an 8-year-old daughter, “Amanda.” Amanda loves to sing, but if I’m honest, her voice is awful. I’ve learned to tolerate it. But my husband tells her to stop every time she sings in his presence, and it hurts her feelings. In response to my telling him as much, he says her singing is like fingernails on a chalkboard, so he shouldn’t be expected to “endure” it. When I suggested we get her some singing lessons, he said he didn’t want to “waste money on a lost cause.” Should I sign her up anyway?

2. Dear Care and Feeding,

My parents divorced when I was 13. Within a year, my dad married my stepmom, who had a son who was 2 at the time, and a little over a year later, they had my half-sister, “Anna.” Anna’s birthday was two weeks ago, and I bought her a Nintendo Switch 2 (I discussed it with my dad and stepmom ahead of time, and they agreed to it).

The problem is that Anna’s half-brother, “Jacob,” has more or less appropriated it for himself, and Anna has called me up saying she has been able to use it all of three times since I gave it to her.

Jacob has literally taken it for himself—as in it’s in his room and Anna can’t access it. My dad and stepmom seem to think this is perfectly acceptable and have made no effort to make Jacob return it to Anna. I wouldn’t have a problem if Anna were sharing it with Jacob, but I didn’t buy the gaming system for it to be given over to him. I am ready to ask my dad and stepmom to either make him return it to Anna or reimburse me for the cost of it so I can buy her a new one. Thoughts?

[personal profile] ysilme here: I wrote a draft with about 180 words for another 3SF fill. I need a certain canon quote to make it work, though, and could't find any online references to it. As this is a video game fandom, Skyrim, I now need to wait until the quote comes up again in the game... such a hardship! XD

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: I edited about 25 or so pages of the novel today.

Interesting discovery:

I was using my old computer in the kitchen today and watching YouTube videos. I didn't bother logging in and thus noticed something.

Either zero or at most just one ad break interruption! (I even purposefully watched one I'd seen before that I know had too many ads). Lately, there have been more and more; sometimes several on a ten-minute vid! That's ridiculous. Not a great incentive to log in. It's like YT punishes you for having an account. Since YT thought I was a brand-new user, it's possible ads would increase once it tracks the kind of things I watch and decides what sort of ads to target me with... although I can't say I'm ever interested in what it showed me.

I do now use DuckDuckGo so I rarely have to deal with ads anymore, but I still have an idea of how many as I often take the extra step of letting the video play on YouTube muted simultaneously, because there are several creators I want to support with likes, comments. It's important to play the video through to the end, or it will count negatively against them.

This woman seemed to be in her mid-to-late sixties. She wears exclusively tie-dye or paisley dusters, chunky jewelry, purple hair, and sometimes even goes barefoot outdoors in the dirt and desert gravel. She’s always very loud, demanding, and backhanded in her politeness. She also talks enough to fill a room, and always shows up so high she can barely function.
