i'm not sure that "changing the distinctive nature of VVC" would be such a bad thing, if its distinctiveness is predicated on inaccessibility!
i mean, to do a dangerous thing and draw a parallel: when universities were male-only, that obviously lent them a particular character. a charming one in many ways, even! and yet i think you'd agree that the loss of that character was outweighed by women's gain.
