From what ratcreaturesays below, GMX may not be the best option because of its information-seeking ways, although who knows, the English-language side may be better.
Hushmail I looked at very very briefly, but it seemed like massive overkill, at least from the page I was looking at. And yeah, I'm not really willing to pay a lot; I like having IMAP mail, but I do have stable, free email through trickster, so I don't really need another. I'm just used to having multiple accounts to handle multiple things.
The mobile issues were flipping me right the hell out, man, although I feel better now having sorted out that all I need to do is be careful about what I log into (and block trackers where possible). But I am so, so glad I decided against a Droid when I was dithering over phones this fall; it's not like Apple is the greatest thing in the world, but man. Yay iphone by comparison.
