One of the really interesting things about it, to me, is that it's such a cross-section of vidding from back in the day. Xena vidders, MediaWest vidders, Escapade vidders, online vidders -- in a way it was one of the most diverse groups VVC ever managed, even though there wasn't stuff like anime involved. A whole bunch of people were willing to give VVC that one shot to see if it would suit them -- and it didn't suit a lot of them, who didn't come back, and VVC went on to develop a particular kind of aesthetic in a lot of ways.
But that first year, there were so many different backgrounds/styles/fandom cultures all just splashing around together. So the vids weren't all good, by a long shot, but it's just interesting looking back through a longer lens with more perspective.
Also yes, hee, on how the definition of fast cuts has changed.
I wonder if maybe you and I should think about doing the history show/panel next year?
Okay, so, my first reaction to this was a very wide-eyed, squeaky "me?" -- I've only been vidding for, like, a year! Maybe 2! ... someday maybe I'll get past always feeling like a newbie. *g*
But thinking about it more -- you know, that could be really interesting. I'm not that versed in the Escapade aesthetic particularly, since I only went for a few years, but it's still the "tradition" I was "raised" in, so.
And I popped the one 2003 VVC DVD I seem to still have (not premieres, dammit - but Also Premiering and Challenge, at least) and watched a few vids, and I was right -- there's already some drastic changes going on in terms of what kind of source people are working with (letterboxing on movies! ... but not on all movies, because some were still being released full-screen, because almost no one had widescreen tvs yet), and the sorts of things we were still ignoring (talkyface; mixed aspect ratios) -- it's all sort of intriguing.
So, er -- let's talk! See if we can rough out enough of something to take to the concom next year.
