I don't remember that Starsky & Hutch vid; I'd be interested to rewatch it.
It doesn't hold up that well to modern eyes, and even at the time it was old-fashioned to people used to Escapade-style vids. It's one of those that seems to assume a fairly deep knowledge of the show on the audience's part, and that has long clips with little action/movement in them - lots of standing around talking, during emotionally crucial scenes that are basically static if you don't already know what's going on. And it's entirely from one episode. So between that and the audio issues, I'm not sure how much anyone retained about it (especially since the Farscape vid's audio issues were more blatant and lasted a lot longer, and came after the S&H vid in the show, so people realized immediately that the audio was going to be a problem -- IIRC, there was one of those sorta silent moans across the room when the Farscape vid started up [I know therienne wound up sliding down a wall into a little ball of despair during it, while she was keeping me company at the back of the room while I tried to stave off a panic attack *g*]). So the S&H vid just got upstaged in every direction, good and bad.
Er, all of which is to say, I'm not surprised you don't remember it. *g*
I'm curious about whether the use of audio was a mistake or a failed experiment. I was going to say "a mostly-failed experiment", but actually, in the end, I think if your audience can't tell if you're making a mistake or performing an experiment, you have failed insofar as you are leaving your audience too far out to sea
Yeah, I think it counts as total failure, alas; I don't remember anyone getting what the vidder intended out of it. Although hm. I also don't know if we really covered these in Vid Review, because those were the days when we only touched on a handful of vids. I know the Xena vid got discussed, because I remember the equal-boxes discussion, but it's possible no one knew how to handle the "wow, that audio was... bad" with any depth. So who knows, maybe someone got it.
The issue makes me think of shows like Good vs. Evil/G vs. E,
Aw! I loved that show. I barely remember anything about it, but I'm pretty sure I still have a tape or two stored away somewhere. I was surprised at the time it didn't make more of a fannish splash. <3 And yeah, I think if that were on today, it would be a nice small-to-medium sized fandom, something like Eureka or Warehouse 13.
and even shows like Peacemakers.
That's never not going to make me sad. :( And we're clearly never even getting DVDs, which is such a waste - it would be so easy to do! And they'd be so PRETTY! And really, if it had aired even 3-4 years later, it would have lasted longer (or at least automatically had DVDs made, sigh).
I don't remember the discussion about the choices in Possession also being the result of technological limitations--I'd be interested to hear more about that, if anyone remembers!
I may have been seriously offbase about that, as I went digging back through Vidder posts to see what people were saying about it, and found Remi talking about some of those stills having had people and other things painted out of them, so clearly all of that slow, drifty emptiness was deliberate. But still; somewhere in my head is a memory of something about the source itself being so iffy that she had to find a way to work around it. Maybe I'm thinking of someone else, though...
I did eventually learn how to watch it, if you know what I mean--like looking at any piece of art, really, and figuring out how to flex my perceptions or let myself relax into what the art itself is saying/doing, instead of me trying/failing to cram my pre-existing filters over it.
Heh, that is so me. I like my nice comfortable pre-existing filters, dammit! It always takes me a while to adjust to new things, and I have no idea if I ever would have gotten Possession if people hadn't been talking about it; I'm not even sure I got as far as the Lamp of Loneliness on my own on that first viewing.
In conclusion... I love the use of internal motion in vids. No offense to cutting or other transitional devices! But but but {{{internal motionnnnnn}}}. ♥
Man, me too. It's really easy to get seduced away by cutting, but man, well-used internal motion is just lovely. ♥
