It's been a stressful kind of day because Capitalism™, so let's try to pull my brain over to fandom for at least a little bit tonight.

The Yuletide team posted an announcement that they're going to experiment this year with letting people have more nominations and requests. It's up to 5 fandoms per nomination and 8 fandoms per request for 2025, and they'll make decisions on future years once they see how much chaos is unleashed this year.

I'm very excited, because that means I have extra spots to play with! On the other hand, my current list of possible Yuletide fandoms is at 30something at the moment. Which, you know, is probably less than helpful. I really need to start narrowing it down, huh?

Feedback Post for Summer 2025

Now that the most recent round has wrapped up, we have a few topics we'd like feedback on. To give feedback, you can reply to this post, privately email us, or leave a screened comment on the Mod Contact Post.

1) Timing of next round
We're thinking of starting the next round in mid to late October, conscious of not overlapping too much with important [community profile] trickortreatex dates. Let us know if you feel there are other timing considerations for the fall round.

2) PROPOSAL: A year-long beta post
Many exchanges have an optional beta post where people can offer to beta-read others' work. Is this something you would be interested in using, whether as a writer or a reader? We would probably make a new one annually.

3) Regarding our rule that participants can't opt out of requesting or offering single drabbles
This round, we implemented a new rule that stated that while participants are still welcome to request/offer other drabble types, they can no longer exclude single drabbles from their offers or requests. Overall, we are heavily leaning towards keeping this rule as is in future rounds. Some reasons why: we like that the universal minimum for this exchange is now 100 words, it was easy to implement on the modding side, it changed the signup process on the participant side very little, it allows us to still use drabble type as a matching criterion, and it is anecdotally helpful for defaults/pinch hitting. We've considered a couple other approaches (such as making drabble type an entirely optional freeform) but we believe the current approach works best for us.

However, we'd still like to hear if you felt it had a substantial negative impact on your experience, or if you think another approach would be better.

4) Anything else on your mind?
If you have any other comments or ideas not related to the above, those are also welcome!

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

I hoped that going up early would be productive but it was not. There was heavy overcast and the closest I got to Fall warblers was hearing two distinctive chip notes that later in the season I might be able to identify, but not now, and I could not find the birds. I had to be content with Swainson's Thrushes everywhere, Wilson's Warblers, and Western Tanagers. Eventually I will see a Townsend's Warbler! So I had a nice walk through Riparian habitat, although I hadn't worn enough layers for true enjoyment. The list: )

There's so much TV coming back soon:

- the new season of Only Murders in the Building starts on 9/8
- the new season of Slow Horses starts 9/24
- the new season of Abbott Elementary starts 10/1

And it's not tv, but the new season of Batman: Wayne Family Adventures also starts 10/1 - there was a new mini episode last night, featuring Alfred being the best. <3

Meanwhile, I still have not watched:

- season 2 of Andor
- season 2 of Wednesday
- season 2 of Poker Face (though I did watch the first episode - the one with Cynthia Erivo, who was fantastic)

And of course, China Beach is finally available on a streaming service I do not have, and without some of the iconic music they used, but it would definitely be worth checking out if I wanted to pay for another streamer, which I don't.

Instead, I seem to have fallen into another Elementary rewatch. Despite some of the ghastly murders, it is a very comforting watch and I love Joan and Sherlock's relationship so much. And I might be feeling a Killjoys rewatch coming up soon too. I guess we'll see.

There are other shows I keep meaning to check out but have not as of yet - there is just too much to watch and too little time.

Have you already decided what fandom(s) to write for? If so, how about doing a little promoting? :D

We've all chosen tiny obscure canons, needless to say. But by posting here you might be able to entice someone else to give it a try — or perhaps you'll even run into a fellow fan, who can't wait to read your coming fic.

Your promo can be long or short, and contain whatever you feel like. Want to post a couple of intriguing screencaps from a movie? Quote a few paragraphs from a book? Rec the best episode of an anime or a TV series? Talk about why you love your favorite character and/or pairing from your fandom? It's all good; anything goes!

Watching Danganronpa: Despair Time was a mistake. I cannot stop thinking about my brand new blorbo. My terrible young man. My perfect angel. Here are assorted ramblings about the latest character I have latched on to entirely because he is the absolute goddamn worst.

Is anyone who follows me into Danganronpa: Despair Time? No. Am I going to keep talking about it regardless? I'd like to see you stop me.

The reason you're suffering through this is that I've already written my sole Despair Time fic idea, and this was not enough to exorcise my feelings. I've got all this writing energy and nowhere to put it! So apparently it ends up in rambling blog posts. I can only apologise.

Talking about my favourite character in Danganronpa: Despair Time. )

I haven't lost my mind this hard over a fictional character in a couple of years; I think the last time was 2023, when I met Jack Shephard and experienced the Great Light Yagami Rediscovery. I'd forgotten how much fun it could be! And also how deeply unfortunate. Sometimes a character just gets my throat in their teeth, and all I can do is wait for them to stop shaking.

We aren't in the middle of nowhere. I also heard a train whistling a mile away, and if one listened closely the whoosh of cars on the nearby interstate was clear, as are planes and helicopters that pass overhead from time to time. But it was a wonderfully peaceful 10 minutes where everything outdoors felt very close and calm.

Laundry room

One of the things I have been doing with myself in the last three months is watching videos in an online interior design course, mostly because various things about the house bother me in a way I can't quite put my finger on. It's not mean to be a pro-level course, and there's various things I already know, but it's helped me figure out one room so far, by forcing me to slow down and first think about who uses the room, what for and how it's used.

It's the laundry room. One would think, "Laundry, duh." But it's also circulation space, because it connects the house to the garage which is the door we use 99% of the time, and it's also storage space. And I would like it to be hang-dry space as well, because the other options for hanging clothes to dry are untenable for various reasons:

1) the first and foremost is my ADHD. The more steps I have to do, the less likely it is to get done. Get out the drying rack, take it somewhere in the house or back porch, set it up, hang clothes, check if they're dry, collect them, bring them in, break down the drying rack, and put it back where it's stored? OH HELL NO.

2) drying outside also makes the clothes smell like the outside and I've never had problems with this before, but both [personal profile] myrialux and I concur that the outdoors smell we get on clothes here is not appealing. Plus, we live in POLLEN CENTRAL and would like to not be allergic to our clothes.

3) the best place to dry inside is the spare room/gym and if clothes are hanging there that I need to move before working out, I won't work out (ADHD again). The spare bath is taken up by the litterbox, and the main bath is back to issue #1, with the added problem of fitting the drying rack in the tub. Any other room gets HUMID and GROSS.

So! I have a PLAN for the laundry room, once we get the $$$ saved up. Steps:

1) hire our neighborhood appliance handyman company to stack the washer and dryer on one side of the TINY room and swap the dryer door to open on the same side as the washer.

2) measure the back wall, to allow for power and water outlets and the dryer vent in the next step, which is...

3) install simple shelving of the rails-screwed-into-studs with shelves on them type, adroitly avoiding the outlets and vents above, as well as pegboard on part of it, to allow for...

4) the wall-mounted drying racks that will require a bit of space to extend/fold out. And then finally...

5) a closet rod installed across the room for clothing that can be put on hangers and hung.

SIMPLY RENDERED PEECTURES BELOW THE CUT...

I am on a real reading tear at the moment, and my bedside book pile is down to five! Naturally I then celebrated this by buying another six or seven cheap ebooks, because I delight in causing my own suffering. I'm hoping to finish another couple of the bedside books soon and then do a poll so you all can decide which bits of the epic to-read shelf I should use to rebuild it with.

A proper gaming post is in the works, but I have been delighted by the recent changes which mean that all Steam games now work on Linux - I haven't tested it extensively, but I've already played several previously-Windows-only games with no issues at all. Aside from work that was the main thing causing me to spend time in Windows, so suddenly I'm spending a lot more time logged into Linux, which means I'm getting to more of the tasks I do there! Including writing up my booklog, although at the rate I'm reading it's going to be a while before that's ready to post, and I've already finished six books in September...

Miss H and I are going to see Florence + The Machine in February, which was extortionately expensive but I'm still looking forward to it! This is why I don't believe people who say that classical audiences are low because tickets are too expensive, because you can get into most CBSO concerts for under £30 and the cheapest Florence tickets were £45 plus fees for standing room only. Which is not to say that £30 isn't a lot of money, but if pop artists can sell out in ten minutes for an average price over £100 then I just don't believe that price point is the major issue.

It's really funny how the last couple of weeks are suddenly waving AUTUMN IS COMING signs. We've had more rain this week than in about the previous month, and while it's still warm, I'm becoming increasingly aware that the sheet I sleep under is going to need to be switched for the duvet in the near future, and that there is a limited time for shirt-sleeves at home. On the other hand, I'm looking forward to being able to wear my jacket again. I used the hot water bottle on Tuesday night, but it's not back into the regular rotation quite yet...

It's been a mildly eventful few weeks, mostly because I ended up with a cold for a week and a half. Other than that, nothing too hairy happening.

I did get baby's first AO3 scam comment! It enthused over my story, especially the way I brought the world and the characters to life, making it real and immersive, pulling the reader in. And, of course, sparked creative ideas of their own and they wanted me to talk to them on Telegram or whatnot, presumably to try to scam me out of money for fanart that'll never arrive. Blocked, deleted, reported.

This, uh, is the work that they loved so much. You can see the GLARING PROBLEM with the bot's comment about my...story. XD

2. Would you say you have an accent?

3. Do you hope to be married (married again if divorced)?

4. If you could take one technology to a desert island (the obvious satellite phone excluded), what would it be?

5. What is the last activity you bought a ticket for?

EFF urges California state lawmakers to pass S.B. 524, authored by Sen. Jesse Arreguín. This bill is an important first step in regaining control over police using generative AI to write their narrative police reports.

This bill does several important things: It mandates that police reports written by AI include disclaimers on every page or within the body of the text that make it clear that this report was written in part or in total by a computer. It also says that any reports written by AI must retain their first draft. That way, it should be easier for defense attorneys, judges, police supervisors, or any other auditing entity to see which portions of the final report were written by AI and which parts were written by the officer. Further, the bill requires officers to sign and verify that they read the report and its facts are correct. And it bans AI vendors from selling or sharing the information a police agency provided to the AI.

These common-sense, first-step reforms are important: watchdogs are struggling to figure out where and how AI is being used in a police context. In fact, a popular AI police report writing tool, Axon’s Draft One, would be out of compliance with this bill, which would require them to redesign their tool to make it more transparent.

This bill is an important first step in regaining control over police using generative AI to write their narrative police reports.

Draft One takes audio from an officer’s body-worn camera, and uses AI  to turn that dialogue into a narrative police report. Because independent researchers have been unable to test it, there are important questions about how the system handles things like sarcasm, out of context comments, or interactions with members of the public that speak languages other than English. Another major concern is Draft One’s inability to keep track of which parts of a report were written by people and which parts were written by AI. By design, their product does not retain different iterations of the draft—making it easy for an officer to say, “I didn’t lie in my police report, the AI wrote that part.”

All lawmakers should pass regulations of AI written police reports. This technology could be nearly everywhere, and soon. Axon is a top supplier of body-worn cameras in the United States, which means they have a massive ready-made customer base. Through the bundling of products, AI-written police reports could be at a vast percentage of police departments.

AI-written police reports are unproven in terms of their accuracy, and their overall effects on the criminal justice system. Vendors still have a long way to go to prove this technology can be transparent and auditable. While it would not solve all of the many problems of AI encroaching on the criminal justice system, S.B. 524 is a good first step to rein in an unaccountable piece of technology.

We urge California lawmakers to pass S.B. 524.

All are invited to attend the EFF Awards on Wednesday, September 10 at the San Francisco Design Center. Whether you're an activist, an EFF supporter, a student interested in cyberlaw, or someone who wants to munch on a strolling dinner with other likeminded individuals, anyone can enjoy the ceremony!

If you're not able to make it, we'll also be hosting a livestream of the event on Friday, September 12 at 12:00 PM PT. The event will also be recorded, and posted to YouTube and the Internet Archive after the livestream.

We are honored to present the three winners of this year's EFF Awards: Just Futures Law, Erie Meyer, and Software Freedom Law Center, India. But, before we kick off the ceremony next week, let's take a closer look at each of the honorees. This time—Erie Meyer, winner of the EFF Award for Protecting Americans' Data:

EFF Awards Winner Erie Meyer

Erie Meyer is a Senior Fellow at the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator where she focuses on the intersection of technology, artificial intelligence, and regulation, and a Senior Fellow at the Georgetown Law Institute for Technology Law & Policy. Since January 20, Meyer has helped organize former government technologists to stand up for the privacy and integrity of governmental systems that hold Americans’ data. In addition to organizing others, she filed a declaration in federal court in February warning that 12 years of critical records could be irretrievably lost in the CFPB’s purge by the Trump Administration’s Department of Government Efficiency. In April, she filed a declaration in another case warning about using private-sector AI on government information. That same month, she testified to the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation that DOGE is centralizing access to some of the most sensitive data the government holds—Social Security records, disability claims, even data tied to national security—without a clear plan or proper oversight, warning that “DOGE is burning the house down and calling it a renovation.”

We're excited to celebrate Erie Meyer and the other EFF Award winners in person in San Francisco on September 10! We hope that you'll join us there.
