Usually as I talk to [personal profile] evil_little_dog on fridays I keep my twiddling fingers busy doing the fannish rec page. today I had nothing to do and was looking for things...somehow forgetting to DO the fandom recs. OMG. You'll get 'em tomorrow.

That's where my head is today. GONE. But here is MY story, based on that 30 seconds of Hazbin Hotel teaser (I had to go for the whump)

Title: Master of Puppets

Fandom: Hazbin Hotel

Summary: Angel finds himself at risk of becoming a pawn for the Vees and he’s not sure he can do anything about it.

Rating: mature

Author Note - This is inspired (and spoiler for) the 30 seconds of teaser trailer for S2 (you’ll know which scene flash, trust me). If you haven’t watched the trailer and don’t want to know, bookmark this for later.

written for [personal profile] spikesgirl58’s six word challenge and the six words were Eatable, Board, Efficient, Ripe, Roar, & Creepy

Also written for the Lyrical titles bingo prompt of song with multiple singers using Master of Puppets by Metallica. I chose this song because Vox is definitely that, a master of puppeting people but also the song is really about how drugs can control an addict and Angel is at the mercy of both. Find the song here Master of Puppets

Also written for the allbingo prompt of shark bait.

Today I call the Grove City office for my surgeon because I'm less annoyed at them because I was at fault for some of that too. It was a mix up. And she goes...well I'm not sure why Chillicothe told you to make a Thursday appt. He does surgery thur/fri So now I'm furious because I suspect that there never WAS a real appt yesterday. I think someone fucked up and all they needed to do was lie to me and say we need to reschedule.

Now I'm going on the 30th and I have to cut a lab in half to get up there for a 4 pm appt. I'm also thinking of calling Cabell on Monday to see if I can get into the ENT surgeon quickly. Highly doubtful but it's worth a call.

I dump off my art today and the new art person loves the one with bones. After I get to my office I realize....I did NOT take pictures of either art project. Go Dana Go.

I get home and I call my insurance after I check my HSA and my EOBs about Aspen Dental which I want to burn down. Yes paid them 180$ but my EOB says I only owed 40 so yes they did owe me back 140 some. So now they say I owed around 170 keeping my money and asking for 25$ more.

I poke around my insurance and as far as I can tell it should have been covered 100%. I call my insurance and it's too soon to tell but she agreed, I shouldn't have owed ANYTHING. So I will be watching every EOB for next few weeks. I'm so angry at them.

Took off around 6am to drive across the state for the last stop of the Gundam Base Mobile USA Tour. I mostly went for *The Experience* and it was a pretty good one!

We ended up getting there with plenty of time to get food and chat with other folks waiting. After a point, the shopping line was split between folks who'd gotten the (free) VIP tickets and everyone else and because I had tickets, we ended up literally first. ^^;; (The tickets were kind of a fiasco - originally only ~Saturday afternoon needed the free tickets for crowd control and then at some point partway through the tour suddenly every time-slot had ticketing. I only knew this because someone in a little gunpla server I'm in mentioned the change and I was like 'wait what' and went and literally snagged a pair two minutes later. However, they were basically zippering the two lines anyway so the handful of people who'd gotten there before us got in at about the same time anyway.)

We were warned that their last stop had wiped a lot of inventory, and yeah, the selection was a little sparse but I still filled a bag and managed a couple kits I'd had recommended and a couple I'd missed during the online drops.

Tossed all that in the car and came back to build our little event model kits and drink more water. They were very good about handing out water left and right. Took a few pictures and then headed over to the host shop, which is less a general hobby shop and more a game store. Lots of tabletop and card games, along with an entire wall of gunpla that was getting swarmed by locusts. (The shop had plenty of employees! It's just difficult to plan for hundreds of voracious nerds.)

I bought way too many kits, and two sets of dice, and shoved everything in the car and we headed home.

Drive overall okay both ways, aside from a few small moments. Car itself did great. One miserable patch of construction both ways. Other side of the state is quite beautiful; there were a few moments when cresting small hills that the view was absolutely stunning.

I really shouldn't be awake right now but here I am. ^^;;

Had a lovely afternoon today.

There's work stuff where I needed restaurants and a 'semi private' room needed clarification, plus I needed some cheques signed. So that was my excuse to head downtown on a friday afternoon.

Which was good, because at restaurant 2 'semi private' was actually a table set apart from all the other tables in a corner, and the restaurant 1 'semi private' was just... a table along the wall on the edge of the dining room.
Which I guess is more private that the tables in the middle of the dining room? but ti's still only a couple feet to another table.

So I saw the first restaurant, had a call in a park and got an issue sorted out, then walked up to visit the boss, got somewhat lost on the way (and was killing a bit of time) and found a gelato place. Got the cheques signed and stopped by restaurant 2 who's dining room wasn't open yet, so I killed time in a cafe where they unexpectedly had the delicious GLuten Free cakes.

Went to Restaurant 2 who's place was perfect. So I got that booked and finished getting all the restaurant reservations for work stuff done.

Then went to the mall which was the whole point of scheduling all this running around for a friday afternoon.

I have a very bad habit of owing the bare minimum of coats. And especially since the pandemic and outside was a thing that happened less? I have a couple winter coats, because they're important (one practical, one dressy) and they're also sized so growing out of them is less of a thing. But all my spring coats now fit awkwardly on me, so I was shopping with a goal.

So now I have 1. Proper Raincoat, 2. A wool blazer and 3. A casual coat that is like wearing a teddy bear. And thus I have a few more choices to be Intentional Decisions about Presentation. Rather than 'this is my coat'.

I was very tempted by a third coat, but I needed he raincoat and liked the other ones better. But maybe I'll keep an eye on it and see if it goes on sale.
And 2 new hairclips to replace the one's I've broken.

Friday sundries:

= Wow, have I really not posted since Sunday? This week was pretty busy at work and I guess my Elementary rewatch, plus reading a very very long Batfamily time travel story (still in progress *sobs*), and also watching the Mets' downward spiral, left me uninspired.

= I didn't watch them blow a lead last night and lose, because it's so disheartening - there is like no sense that they can hold a lead or come back if they are losing. I'm only planning to watch tonight to see if they get no-hit by Jacob deGrom on his first return to Citi Field as a Texas Ranger. #the existential futility of being a mets fan <- my tag is too long for DW but it is accurate

= I did make it through week one of our family survivor football league - my niece decided on doing a survivor league this year since it is much less work for everyone than a fantasy league. In it, each week, everyone picks one team to win, and either you win and move on, or you lose and are out, though we are doing it with 2 strikes, so you can lose twice before you are out. And you can only pick each team once, so you can't, like, ride the Packers or whoever to victory every week. My strategy is basically to pick whoever is playing the New Orleans Saints, since they are predicted to be the worst team in the league this year. I made it through last week, anyway. *g*

= Usually I have my groceries delivered on Friday afternoon but somehow in my infinite wisdom last night while I was updating the order, I rescheduled it for Sunday afternoon. And then I was in a meeting from 8:30 am - 11 am this morning, so it was too late to move it back to today when I discovered what I'd done. So I left it where it was and will just order pizza for dinner tonight and then have it breakfast and lunch tomorrow as well!

= Anyway, the world is a vampire. Uh, trash fire. But there will be pizza and baseball and probably sleeping in tomorrow. Hopefully it is cool enough to leave the AC off tonight - it was for most of the week, but then last night was not. And since I had to be up an hour earlier than usual (see above re: 8:30 am meeting), I didn't want to spend precious time tossing and turning because I was too hot to sleep.

If you are as up-to-date as it is possible to be on COVID and/or influenza vaccinations for your country, I will write for you. Southern Hemisphere people: as up to date as possible means for your flu season, not the Northern Hemisphere's. Prompt away.

My fandoms.

Recently experienced:

KPop Demon Hunters - OT3!

Thursday Murder Club (movie) - ALL THE SMOOSH HANDS.

Slow Horses - I'm caught up on the TV show, have listened to all the books shy of Clown Town, and have a massive soft spot for Shirley and Louisa especially. Ho needs to never, ever get laid ever, but I adore him too. I want to introduce him to Jason Mendoza (The Good Place) so they can have a low wis/high int vs. low int/high wis trolley problem.

The Expanse - I'm halfway through Nemesis Games book-wise, and am slowly making my way through the show. I love everyone in this galaxy, and if anyone prompts me for Avasarala/Bobbie I will have feelings all over the place.

Please format your requests: Drabble or Poetry (you're likely to get a limerick), Fandom(s), character/pair/group (crossover pairings are fair game), any other prompt material (which I may ignore).

If you prompt me with something I can't write, I will ask you for something else.

On a personal note: if I don't get back to you rapidly this weekend, it's because I've been knocked out by my own one-in-each-arm strategy of vaccination. Go go gadget immune system!

D&D is cancelled tonight so that the DM can drug herself into a stupor and try to get more than 3-4 hours of sleep for once. As for me, I think that I'm going to take a short nap for the next hour or so and then settle in to play video games all night.

I'm leaning towards playing more of that Mass Effect: Andromeda playthrough that I started last weekend, although I may switch over to Baldur's Gate 3 or Dragon Age: The Veilguard for at least a while. We'll just have to see what my brain seems most interested in tonight.

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

This was a sweet albeit kind of heavy handed story about magical orphans facing societal prejudice and an unfeeling bureaucracy and learning how to understand their own self worth, guided by an awkward trio of queer adults who are also struggling to get their shit together. The speech Linus gives DICOMY at the end is way over the top but otherwise the book makes its points reasonably well.

But I struggled to completely connect with it. Ironically, though many of the reviews I found online criticized it for blasphemy and anti-Christian ideology, I actually found it too Christian. One of the magical children is the son of Satan, purportedly the Antichrist, and is endowed with reality warping powers and internal voices urging him to destroy the world. The book's heroic characters insist he's merely an imaginative and sensitive 6 year old who if properly loved will not destroy the world, but I found that even taking a side on this question was too theological on a path I was uninterested in following the book to. Either Arthur and Linus are right and Lucy isn't actually the Antichrist but merely a potential Antichrist, or they're wrong and the pull of his fated destiny isn't about his choices but about the role the prophecy will force him into. Klune created the book's worldbuilding, he can pick his own answer to this question, but if you're not invested in Christian eschatology it's not really an interesting debate.

ChrisCalledMeSweetie at Tumblr proposed a Cabin Pressure limerick challenge of a poem every day based on Cabin Pressure's episodes, in alphabetical order as per the canon.

The example provided was gen, so I wrote a set of gen limericks.

Then I reflected that gen limericks are not really in the spirit of limericks, so I also wrote a set of dirty limericks.

And then I got too down to post poems for a while, so today I spammed everyone subscribed to me with Fitton through Limerick's limericks.

Hello to all members, passers-by, curious onlookers, and shy lurkers, and welcome to our regular daily check-in post. Just leave a comment below to let us know how your current projects are progressing, or even if they're not.

Checking in is NOT compulsory, check in as often or as seldom as you want, this community isn't about pressure it's about encouragement, motivation, and support. Crafting is meant to be fun, and what's more fun than sharing achievements and seeing the wonderful things everyone else is creating?

There may also occasionally be questions, but again you don't have to answer them, they're just a way of getting to know each other a bit better.

This Week's Question: Share your favourite crafting tip, if you have one.

If anyone has any questions of their own about the community, or suggestions for tags, questions to be asked on the check-in posts, or if anyone is interested in playing check-in host for a week here on the community, which would entail putting up the daily check-in posts and responding to comments, go to the Questions & Suggestions post and leave a comment.

I now declare this Check-In OPEN!

At NIH, Political Appointees Get More Say in Grant Decisions
In a shift from longstanding precedent, political priorities may now override peer review in research funding decisions.

:head in hands:  This is the exact opposite of the way that current peer review works.  Yes, science agencies have always had priorities and shifted funding toward initiatives that might be priorities of the current administration, but not at this nitty gritty grant level.  Before, you might fund, say, the BRAIN initiative because it's something the president backs.  But you would then let the peer review process (ie, actual brain experts) figure out who should get the funding.  Now?  Now a political appointee could decide they don't like a project for apparently literally any reason, and even though it's actual, non-sarcastic "gold-standard science", it could be passed over.

This opens up all kinds of corruption influences.  Who is going to be watching the watchers?  What criteria are appointees allowed to use to thumbs-down these grants...or can they do it for any reason at all?  Are they just looking for a keyword?  Are they looking at the PI's internet history?  The Institution, to see who the administration is fighting with now?  Are they relying on their unscientific opinion of what "sounds important"?  Are they open to bumping up funding for PIs or institutions that are friendly to them or their higher-ups. regardless of the science involved?

And the anecdotes at the end from how all this is affecting the peer review process--how scientists are starting to nope out of this onerous and increasingly apparently thankless task--are the predictable signs of a scientific funding process in absolute crisis.  Scientific review runs on volunteers, and people stop wanting to volunteer if they feel they're just going to be ignored, jerked around, and wronged.
