When I went to the laundromat the other day, I couldn't find the hot water detergent. I assumed I'd just put it in a safe place the time before instead of its usual place, but I couldn't find it anywhere. I had a vague memory of putting it on the table on the front porch before going off to do something else, meaning someone swiped it. Which is odd because porch pirates are rare on this street. Maybe I just forgot it at the laundromat, which also seems unlikely, though less unlikely than a porch pirate. Luckily I still had a box of Sunlight powder that I'd half considered throwing out because liquid works better. But anyway, I now have more scentless eco-friendly hot water detergent.

Cooler today but still muggy, so I sweat considerably when sweeping up seedlings this evening. But half the front path is done at least, and tomorrow is supposed to be actually cool,  so I may get this finished before Monday's rain reduces it to muck. We need rain, I know, but Monday is also a dentist day and I wish it would rain some other time.

Finished The Lotus Palace and sent it off to the 'one person is waiting' so she can have it on the weekend. But if I'd realized it was a Harlequin I wouldn't have started it in the first place. I mean, perfectly respectable for what it was doing, but the ratio of mystery to romance was heavily in favour of the latter,  and I wanted a lot more of the former.

In a world where everyone takes and takes and takes, we shouldn't be surprised when our next-door neighbor decides to do the same to us. The Golden Rule does not exist in the real world, so you'd better teach your toddlers that not everything is what it seems in Pre-K.

Common sense suggests that if one owns a car, they will either own a driveway or be content in taking a few minutes to scavenge for a parking spot. In most suburban neighborhoods, there's an influx of street parking, so for those who prefer a picket fence and an in-ground pool, this story might not apply.

The neighbor in this next story evidently believes they are entitled to another resident's driveway, given that they've parked in their spot for the third time this week.

Naturally, the resident is upset and has tried to mitigate the situation without escalating, but entitlement knows no bounds… especially in parking wars. We already know who is correct in this situation, don't we? The last line of defense is a tow truck, but some might argue that it should have been the first. What do you think? Scroll below to read the full story.

I finished 7/7 from my last PTW list and it went well. I have no expectations for this challenge. ...I might be a little scared?

Skill: Re-draw a prompt 1 time.

Roll #1:

Starting off with a 4. Prompt: disliked genre. Okay, I guess it has been a while since I watched more 2.5-jigen no Ririsa...

Roll #2:

An 11! Prompt: popular anime. Going with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

Roll #3:

A 6 and that's the TBW pile, oh boy. Generated a 123 and that's Dungeon Meshi S2 which hasn't aired, re-generating...322, which is Liehuo Jiao Chou (Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire), a priest novel adaptation, interesting.

-Moved Dragon Ball Z stuff to hold lost (can't decide how I want to proceed)
-Took off Dramatical Murder Bad End special because I was already disturbed enough from the game scenes, why watch them again even if they don't show everything;;
-Moved Dream Festival! to hold (going to try and read the available game stories first).

Roll #4:

An 8. My luck did not last, I landed on the trap tile. Went back, re-rolled and got a 10. Prompt: dislike genre...again...I'm just gonna use my skill. Le sigh. New prompt: sword & sorcery. I need to watch more Slayers.

Roll #5:

A 6...TBW list again ack.534...oh, Tianbao Fuyao Lu (Legend of Exorcism)!! Now, I had started this anime at one point, but lost my place and must've decided to start over. It's based on a BL novel of the same name that got licensed by Seven Seas.

-Moved The First Slam Dunk to Hold since I'm reading the manga right now
-Unless something changes my mind someday, removed The iDOLM@STER
-Removed The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki - Northern War, maybe someday when I've played all the games I'll watch it?

Roll #6:

A 9 and the end. Reward: Dr. Stone: Science Future!
Anime PTW List:

[Ecchi/Harem] 2.5-jigen no Ririsa ✔️
[Shounen/Military] Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood ✔️
[Supernatural] Liehuo Jiao Chou (Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire)
[Fantasy] Slayers ✔️

Love is already complicated as is…now incorporate it into the workplace and add a love triangle to the mix, and there you have it, peeps: The ultimate recipe for disaster. This coworker had gotten out of a long-term relationship and waited a fairly long time to open himself up to love again. But as he spent time in the office, he organically began to fall for his coworker, and to put it simply: There were sparks! Their only roadblock, another coworker who has constantly expressed his unrequited love for her after just three dates, despite the ultimate rejection from her side.

So they did what any respectful work-couple would do, and kept their relationship secret for a little while. But this employee no longer wanted to keep his personal life hidden from his work friends, one of whom happened to be that Romeo spin-off, and she was going to work at another company anyway, so he thought now would be the perfect time to expose their relationship to the world…Let's just say it didn't quite go to plan, and it was more as though a bride had just run off at the altar with her groom's best friend…Tension in the office has reached a new high, all because this coworker can't get over the fact that the girl of his dreams has been 'stolen' right under his nose!

Were you a well-behaved child during airplane flights? Or, if you have kids now, are those kiddos polite and quiet, or do they get upset and throw tantrums?

My parents had the foresight to never take me and my siblings on an airplane. We didn't really have the money for things like that, but as a kid, I was relieved, because the thought of flying on a plane high above the ground was utterly terrifying. I think if I had flown before the age of like, 10, I would've been a screaming, sobbing mess, making the flight miserable for everyone around me. I'm often surprised to see little kids on flights who are well-behaved… at least some of the time. A lot of parents let their kids run around before boarding, and maybe feed them a filling meal, in the hopes that the child then naps throughout the flight. It's kind of 50/50, though: that youngster on the plane might be a perfect angel, or they might sob loudly for the entire duration of the flight.

Kids can be entertained pretty easily, especially when that flight has a TV on the back of every seat. I know parents are sometimes screen-averse, but this is an excellent time to let your little one binge-watch a TV show or a few movies. I know a lot of those babies already have iPads, too, so that's also a great opportunity to let them have their screen time. Then, there's the added bonus that when you get to your destination (hopefully somewhere fun!) the children won't be begging for their screens, and instead, they'll be energized and ready to play.

This flyer has a bone to pick with a parent who let his kids look out the window for way too long. And for some reason, he didn't let them look out of the windows on their own seat? I just don't understand that… unless it was one of those massive jets that has a middle row with no windows. But even so, you can't just hog someone else's window for an entire flight! It just goes to show how different people's views on acceptable behavior are.

After you check out the airplane shenanigans below, read about what happened when a locked-out driver refused to pay the locksmith who opened up his car: "I'm not paying you 80 bucks."

I was reading an article about, more or less, how to tackle the discrepancies between what you want (short-term) and what you want (long-term) when I stumbled across the line "Everyone has once-worn clothes strewn on the furniture.". I've seen people talk about it as a "problem" sometimes before, but - is that really a common thing that people do?? I am now madly curious.

Do you routinely have part-worn clothes around?

View Answers

Never. Clothes are on my body or in the laundry.
1 (3.2%)

Maybe one or two items
15 (48.4%)

Half a dozen outfits in various stages of wear at any given time
13 (41.9%)

My entire clothing stock is spread around my living space in a quantum superposition of dry laundry not put away and various stages of wear
2 (6.5%)

Do you think it's totally normal to have multiple part-worn items lying around the bedroom etc?

View Answers

Absolutely
11 (34.4%)

It's not ideal but mostly, yes
13 (40.6%)

I wouldn't say normal, but people do it
5 (15.6%)

Why... why would you do that
3 (9.4%)

What's worst

View Answers

Washing clothes every wear
15 (48.4%)

Wearing clothes for multiple days
1 (3.2%)

Not tweaking your outfit every day for the exact circumstances
1 (3.2%)

Clothes
14 (45.2%)

(I wear most of my clothes once before washing them; jumpers and trousers mostly go for a week before washing; at any given time I have both home and outside trousers in use and I might have a jumper around that I'm wearing intermittently, but that's the maximum "part-worn clothes lying around" I get).

Episode 3:
Two more new characters, Nitta and Hash. I don't see why Teru is trying so hard to cover up the word 'magic', Iko is a child, just play it off. Lol they're calling it 'Stalker Map', Tagi's spying on Ren.

Tagi's way of getting Ren to drink the potion;; And who did they say didn't get along with Ren before? Nitta/Rabu's group?

Episode 4: And yet two more! Jango and Marie. Wizards fight zombies??

Their captain Yuku is coming because everyone is being sent to the Frontlines, reserves and people recovering all, and he's at least 1,000 years old. 😲

Episode 5: So the potion didn't bring back Ren's memory, something about a 'bug'?? What exactly are 'Messengers'?

Ohh, so you put a Flag in someone so that when you go to the Afterlife, you can come back. That's why the two people at the clothes shop can't go to fight, because they haven't placed Flags.

Episode 6: I'm so confused, if Tagi dies, Ren won't be able to be a Wizard again? Who has whose Flag?!

Silver is all powerful. I don't understand what happened at all. But Ren's alive, and maybe Yuku?? And they tried to erase Iko's memory but he secretly remembers. They decided to stay there at least until Ren's memories come back.

Next I will be going through content with the Wayback Machine.

It really is too bad that Flaglia's content was taken down and there are no translators as far as I can find who preserved the content. :/ The Wayback Machine can only show so much.

One of our very best friends from college lives close to us. Or rather, we all still (or again) live close to college--I say that "like the salmon, we came back to spawn." She's had breast cancer, was in remission, now it's back ... metastasized. Kind of a lot. I've been to see her, she looks pretty good so far, we had a good time talking about my kids' life changes and about books. But I have a crushing pain in my chest, y'know? And I woke up this morning with my shoulders aching, and I've been *gnawing* on my night guard in my sleep ...

Meanwhile over on Bluesky there's an ongoing multiday ... thing ... because we're asking people to register for the #NoKings protest on Oct.18th, and a BUNCH of high-profile accounts don't understand why & are going on about OPSEC ... and I *do* understand why, I can explain, but it would take so much energy ...

One of the good things in my life is that [personal profile] sholio has been posting Murderbot recs! I will double her rec (if you can stand WIPs) for Robbing the Hood by [archiveofourown.org profile] Rilleshka, a canon-divergence Space Pirate!AU where Murderbot teams up with a *different*, non-verbal bot pilot before it ever meets PresAux, and things spiral from there. It gets particular praise from me because [archiveofourown.org profile] Rilleshka addresses with the *big* implausibility in canon (shut up), which is that human neural tissue is actually incredibly fussy, & keeping it functional must involve, at minimum, *nutrition*.

So, where can I get some Murderbot icons?

Librarians are known for "shhhushing" and reading. They love books and being non-confrontational. But that is just a stereotype! Librarians can be just as feisty as anyone. Sometimes they even have to use all that book wit to clap back at an annoying Karen. Sometimes even that annoying Karen can be the librarian. Just like this librarian who had to put a colleague in her place. This particular co-worker was totally a Karen. She loved to complain about every itty bitty little mistake anybody would make on the job. It was a never ending mouthful of criticism.

One day she got up in the middle of a team meeting and decided to complain about everyone in front of everyone, like she was the boss (she wasn't). So one librarian had enough. She leaned in and let her have it with one simple zinger of a line. It shocked the Karen co-worker to her core and she immediately stopped complaining and sat down. It didn't silencing her forever, but it did for that meeting and what a glorious meeting it was!

... and doesn't quite make it.

On page 187 (of 218), we finally get this paragraph:

At this point we need to return to a crucial caveat. In most cases of persistent pain, whatever caused the initial injury has healed. Pain is now the primary disease. But there are a number of cases where there is continual damage that triggers nociceptive fibres; chronic inflammatory diseases are good examples. It is also important to point out that not every case of back pain is our brain's overreaction. A small -- but important -- minority of cases are caused by serious conditions -- cancer, some infections, spinal fractures and the nerve-compressing cauda equina syndrome -- but these can usually be ruled out by doctors, who will be on the lookout for 'red flag' symptoms. However, in the majority of cases of persistent pain (and over 90% of cases of back pain), there is no longer any identifiable tissue damage; our brain has become hypersensitive.

In a book that otherwise dedicates a lot of time to talking about gender and racial inequalities in healthcare access, including a solid half-paragraph on how common and how painful endometriosis (a chronic inflammatory condition!) is, the bit where "well this only applies to most people..." gets breezed past is certainly causing me more feelings. And yet it's still the closest anything I've read so far actually gets to engaging with the fact that the rest of us exist, so... no get-out-of-writing-essays-free card for me here, alas.

(The Painful Truth, Monty Lyman, mostly pretty good and definitely got me to think constructively about a few things -- like the merits of classical vs contemporary Pilates for my specific usecase via discussion of knitting -- and introduced me to some more, like open-label placebos and "safe threats" and the impact of paracetamol on empathy. It's incomplete, but not disrecommended.)

Ever since Condé Nast's acquisition of Pitchfork in 2015, there's been a steady decline in Pitchfork's music reviews, specifically regarding authenticity.

The former alternative digital music magazine, founded in 1995, is well-known for its in-depth news coverage of the music industry, album reviews, and numerous lists ranking the top tunes in various categories and genres. The media conglomerate's acquisition of Pitchfork has tainted the editors' voices and the brand's media presence as a whole, wherein the writers are too forgiving, fail to provide critical commentary (when applicable), and overall, lack the taste the masses have developed over the years. On the contrary, the writers are cornered and likely hold fear of reprisal from stans, especially because this will gut readership (nobody wants to read music journalism that makes them feel insecure about their music taste). Pitchfork is no longer a taste-maker, and this directly affects our perception of musical art and trends.
