Word Count/Length/Size: 22,614 words
Creator's Summary: Harry Sullivan’s one rule is: not to sleep with Sarah Jane Smith. Yes, she’s hot, but falling into bed with her after every wedding must stop! But when Harry sees a new side to her, he decides that some rules are made to be broken.
Characters/Pairings: Sarah Jane Smith/Harry Sullivan, Jamie McCrimmon
Warnings/Notes: None

Reasons for reccing: This is a setting-change AU. One of the fun things about those is how the characters are integrated into it - there are a lot of Doctors and companions in this, all with reasonable reasons to be there. And Sarah and Harry are fun, meeting in a different way, but still arguing the same way.

Miss Austen (Miniseries)

Miss Austen: is a delightful four part miniseries. Now with the exception of the excellent Miss Austen Regrets, featuring Olivia Williams as an older Jane A., biographical media on Jane Austen has suffered from the usual flaw of biopics or bio series focusing on female authors, i.e. insisting on inflicting plots of their most popular work on their life. Miss Austen also avoids this, not least by the fact the titular Miss isn’t Jane, it’s her older sister Cassandra, played in middle age by a superb as usual Keeley Hawes and in flashbacks when young by SinnØve Karlsen, who is so versatile that despite having seen her being very good as Clarice Orsini, Lorenzo de’ Medici’s wife in Medici and superb most recently as Bayta in Foundation’s third season, I didn’t recognise her until googling her. (In addition to great acting, I blame the regency outfit and hairstyle in the flashbcks. *g*) Jane Austen is played by Patsy Ferran who is also great, both when being mischievous and witty, passionate about writing and her sister, and depressed (for various reasons, not least the early lack of success). In fact, this miniseries has led me to the conclusion that Jane Austen is like Benjamin Franklin in that the best way to treat her is as a supporting character where she can shine and leave the audience asking for more, whereas when Ben or Jane get the main character treatment, the increased focus reduces their charisma and attraction.

(This is also why back in my Highlander days, I never wanted a Methos spin-off, despite being as fond of the character as any other fan. He is perhaps THE example of a character who needs to remain a recurring guest star in order to maintain what makes their charm and mystery.)

Attend the saga of sisters and a sister-in-law… ) The script manages to avoid the obvious quotes while coming up for Austenish sounding things the characters to say, and does great both with the social comedy of manners and the emotional drama. All in all really superb. Anyone either German like me or French: I watched it on ARTE, which also offers the undubbed, original version. Enjoy!

Books update:

Since my last update, I read:
  • It's Not the End of the World - Jonathan Parks-Ramage
  • The Fall of Koli - M.R. Carey
  • Weyward - Emilia Hart
  • Bright Young Women - Jessica Knoll
  • Heartwood - Amity Gaige
  • Isola - Allegra Goodman
  • L'Arminuta - Donatella Di Pietrantonio
  • The Long Walk - Richard Bachman/Stephen King
  • Clear - Carys Davies
  • Luminous - Silvia Park
  • Severance - Ling Ma
  • Idol, Burning - Rin Usami
  • Young Mungo - Douglas Stuart
  • The Bewitching - Silvia Moreno-Garcia

I found a few of these kinda disappointing (It's Not the End of the World; Heartwood; Isola, L'Arminuta; Idol, Burning), but all things considered I had a good time. My favorites out of all of these were Bright Young Women, Clear, Luminous, and Young Mungo.

Bright Young Women was a breath of fresh air when it comes to how true crime and true-crime-inspired media approach their narrative; I really appreciated how it re-centered the focus on the victims and didn't pull any punches describing the serial killer as what it was: a pathetic little man who got away with it because of the incompetence of the people who should have granted the victims justice, and not someone with a genuin-level intellect or superhuman charm.

Clear was such a sweet little story! All about the connections humans form in spite of the circumstances, the inevitability of change, and how it doesn't necessarily have to be a negative thing. I spent the whole book bracing myself for a bad ending that didn't come. For once, it was nice to end on a hopeful note <3

Luminous grabbed me like very few books manage to actually do! It has been a WHILE since the last time I felt so attached to characters in a book. And it was the author's debut! I seriously cannot wait to see where they go from here!

I've been wanting to read Shuggie Bain for ages, but somehow I ended up reading Young Mungo first. It was a rough read, but also had such stunning prose and such memorable and believable characters. I don't wanna get into TMI territory, but it his very close to home in some places, and when that happened, it was scarily accurate. Can't wait to be in the proper mood to read Shuggie Bain as well!

Young Mungo was such an incredible book that I felt a little lost after finishing it, so I hopped on the group chat and asked my friends to vote for as many of these as they wanted, based exclusively on vibes:

Untitled-design-2

And they unanimously voted for Automatic Noodle, Penance, and Swimming in the Dark coming second with the same amount of votes. I started Automatic Noodle yesterday and wanted to read it all in one go (it's pretty short, 160ish pages) but a pretty bad migraine stopped me, so I'm gonna have to finish it today after quali. I'm really enjoying it so far! I hope the robots manage to make their dream come true! ;^;

I'm also supposed to start Le Perfezioni by Vincenzo Latronico for the book club H and I are trying to start. We still have a bit more than a month, but she's gonna start reading it tomorrow, so I'll try to do the same lol Fingers crossed!

Recently Finished:

Come Unto These Yellow Sands by Josh Lanyon: Sebastian Swift is a compelling character: a poet who can't write, distranged from his poet mother, and a recovering addict. When he lends his cabin key to a his bruised student out of sympathy, the student turns up missing and becomes a murder suspect. Lanyon made him believable and sympathetic, so when he dig hole for himself, you can where he's coming from. The mystery is fine, but his relationship with his boyfriend Max feels open-ended to me.

Strange Houses by Uketsu: A writer has discovered that the floor plan of a second-hand house reveals a mysterious "dead space” hidden between the walls. Seeking a second opinion, the writer shares the floor plan with an architect friend only to discover more “strange spaces” dotted across the house. Further investigation leads to more mysteries and a terrible plot behind them all.

It's quick and fast paced, with a big twist at the ending. The clues are told through a series of floor plans and interviews, so we piece together the truth alongside the protagonists. The book covers a lot of dark themes, including

child abuse, involuntary confinement, murder and suicide.

The Moomins and the Great Flood: I watched the Moomin anime as a kid, but found it boring then. Only recently I wanted to check out Moomin novels. The world of Moomins was weirder and more dangerous than what I have vaguely remembered about the anime. I really like how matter of sense Moominmamma was. She was an impressive character.

Today was a LOW-shopping day. *g* I hit the Pharmacy while I was downtown and got in a walk around the park. I filled my gas tank and dropped a book off at the library on the way to mom’s.

I did a load of laundry (washed, dried AND folded), hand-washed dishes, went for several walks with Pip and the dogs, cut up chicken for the dogs' meals, scooped kitty litter, paid some bills online, and showered. *whispers* I picked up more bbq chicken quarters for supper. Sunnycrest was having a Harvest Fest, and bbq chicken and pulled pork was part of that. The dinners were disappointing, but a night of not having to cook supper is still a win for me!

I read more fanfic and watched some HGTV programs.

Temps started out at 60.6(F) and reached 72.1. I had no idea it was going to be so warm in the morning! We were actually warm sleeping overnight because we’d planned for another 45 degree night.

As the final operations come to U-1923, political decisions that could affect Stargate Command and the entire Multiversal Task Force are debated in the halls of the United States Congress. A vote for war approaches, one that four teams have all agreed that, if passed, will spell ruin for the United States they call an ally. Intelligence has not turned any minds away, and a doctor and a general must make a last attempt to sway their allies from sheer disaster.

Yet the halls of power that hold sway over Stargate Command do not only contain politicians and wonks. In the shadows are others that do not hold to the same moral code of Gen. Hammond or his subordinates. As the clock ticks down and choices need to be made, Dr. Harishva Pandey and Gen. Arthur Locke will have to decide: What is moral, and what is right?

Recommendations from people I trust.

I have never heard of Shoji Morimoto nor his “Do-Nothing Rental Service” before, but a recs for his memoir "Rental Person Who Does Nothing" made it sound really interesting. It's an enjoyable read. Shoji Morimoto has a lot of keen observation about loneliness and social expectation.

Relevance to my current focus:

When I have just finished Piranesi, I wanted to read all the books like that. If I'm interested in philosophy introduction this week, my tbr list will explode with many relevant books.

Fannish Interest:

Aww, this book has a productive fandom/exchange rec post/fannish discusiion. Better check it out. I have picked up many books because of Yuletide.

Interesting Cover:

Eyecatching graphic design helps. For example, I like the cover of The Tangleroot Palace
