I got wind of this via the League of Movable Type newsletter this morning, so it seems a good idea to share this with all of you reading this account. Because Indigenous type resources are part of the Comeback process as outlined by - among others - John Ralston Saul...

[personal profile] sylvanwitch here: I had today off but a bit of adulting to do (after which, I hit up a rummage sale and got to take a long walk in a park I haven’t been to in a long while), but before I left for my appointment, I edited a bit of the novel.

All day on Wednesday, I thought it was Thursday, and all day yesterday, I thought it was today. But it was not! So I do have some Wednesday books posting to do, now on Friday!

What I've just finished
The Oleander Sword and The Lotus Empire by Tasha Suri, the second and third books in her Burning Kingdoms trilogy. Overall, I thought these two were much more engaging than the first book, and I wanted to know what happened next, but I wasn't blown away by them like I was by her Books of Ambha duology (which I highly recommend!).

Also I've read both Into the Riverlands and Mammoths at the Gate by Nghi Vo. I enjoy these novellas quite a bit and these two were wonderful. I especially liked the martial arts references in Riverlands and how Mammoths was about grief and stories, two of my favorite topics to read about!

What I'm reading now
The Brides of High Hill, the next Singing Hills Cycle novella by Nghi Vo. I've just started it but I'm enjoying it so far.

What I'm reading next
I am just happy to be reading at all so I cannot say! I thought the next Craft Wars book was out in September, but it looks like it's not until the end of October, so I guess we'll see!

Speaking of books, though, last night I watched the Netflix adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club and I enjoyed it - the casting is A++ for the most part (Helen Mirren is perfect as Elizabeth and Ben Kingsley is great as Ibrahim. And Pierce Brosnan remains ridiculously handsome.) - and I think 95% of the streamlining they did was fine, because there were a few two many twists and turns in the book, but spoiler for both book and movie ) I haven't read any of the other books in the series, though I'm sure I will eventually, but I hope it does well enough that they can make a few more movies with this set of actors.

Now I have to go take my strawberry summer cake out of the oven. I was invited to a cookout tomorrow at my sister's at the last moment, so I have to have a cake to bring!

I’ve been thinking (dangerous, I know) about the whole concept of “having a type.” People will ask you what your type is and expect, like, tall, dark, and handsome or short girls with tattoos or something quantifiable in the visible spectrum.

I keep saying I don’t really have a physical type, and that’s mostly true, but then I remember that I am extremely predictable when presented with:

  • boobs (yes, thank you. approved)
  • arms/shoulders/hands (the holy trinity, sculpted by the gods, perfect for hugs, holding, etc.)
  • and a cute smile with dimples (instant death, funerals on Tuesday.)

but honestly? my real type, the one that has haunted me across fandom after fandom like some eldritch repetition compulsion, is not about looks. it’s about vibe. it’s about the socially awkward nerd/geek archetype.

like:

  • the stammering genius who can calculate orbital trajectories but cannot flirt to save their life.
  • the bookish disaster whose entire love language is handing you lore.
  • the character who absolutely panics when someone sits too close to them but will recite a 40-minute lecture on obscure historical trivia if you so much as make eye contact.
  •  the ones who have arms, yes (thank you again), but also the emotional range of “confused owl who has never been in public before.”
so like, the ur-text for this type, the primordial soup from which all my future attractions would crawl out, was Willow Rosenberg. tiny hacker witch, babbling her way through sentences, nerdy sweaters, devastating magical power, zero chill when faced with a cute girl. that’s the blueprint right there.

and then it just… kept happening.

  • Sam Carter (Stargate SG-1): astrophysicist, genius, blows up suns in her free time, still somehow flustered when someone gets personal.
  • Daniel Jackson (also Stargate): the man who will translate a dead language on the fly but forgets how to hold a conversation with a living person. glasses, floppy hair, emotionally constipated: chef’s kiss.
  • Penelope Garcia (Criminal Minds): maximalist hacker chaos gremlin, dresses like she’s powered by rainbows, says the most unhinged things with absolute sincerity.
  • Abby Sciuto (NCIS): goth lab queen, talks a mile a minute about forensics, deeply earnest under the eyeliner. if she doesn’t count she should.

and it spirals out from there. every fandom has one. the genius who trips over their own words, the hacker who overshares, the scholar who forgets to eat, the witch whose spellbook is better organized than their life.

yes, I like boobs. yes, shoulders/hands/arms are my eternal weakness. yes, dimples will ruin me every time.
but the real through-line? the thing that never changes?
give me the socially awkward nerd archetype and I will imprint like a baby duck.

(and then, as I said on Tumblr
#yes i have a type your honour #and it’s willow rosenberg with different hats #sam carter blew up a sun and my heart #daniel jackson tripped over his own shoelaces and i imprinted #penelope garcia maximalist chaos gremlin supreme #abby sciuto forensic goth princess #nerds my beloved #boobs are great but have you considered lore #dimples are fatal shoulders are eternal #socially awkward archetype continuum #from hacker witches to stargates to crime labs to the atp tour #tennis fandom dont look at me #actually do look at me #yes this is about jannik #gangly apologetic owl boy who calculates everything #sports but make it nerdy #my narrative gravitational pull remains undefeated)

1. I feel like if you're chronically ill you should get exempt from being non-chronically ill.

2. I thought I was better, but then I got irrationally grumpy over a book review having the "The Art and Making Of Arcane" in their background. It's no one's fault the French edition is out of print, I just wish I had that book.

Today's prompt is brought to you by the postdoc who emailed me today at 4pm asking me to obtain the PDFs of 711 journal articles. Thankfully, I have mechanisms to automate this (bless Endnote's 'Find Full Text' function) for the articles to which my university is subscribed, and he was reasonable about the others, and how long it might take to work through them, but the request still had me laughing in incredulity.

So, the prompt is this: what is the most ridiculous thing you have been asked to do in the final hour of the working day or week?

1) Too long ago now, I shared some DS9 related meta posts at [community profile] meta_warehouse and found that I was interested in the suggestions about older Trek being more character oriented than newer Trek shows. Although the post involved DS9 and Discovery, if we look at Star Trek Enterprise versus Discovery, "bad writing" doesn't cover it all. Read more... )

2) In Germany, news readers asked to identify AI created news often couldn't, and were more likely to stay subscribed. (You can test yourself on some of the samples at the link)

3) Watched another season of Silent Witness and came to a realization about why I took to Clarissa so quickly. Read more... )

4) I have yet to get back to Boston Legal, interrupted as I was by new subscriptions, shows returning, etc. But I had left myself some notes about something I still think is worth mentioning even if I don't develop this out into a longer essay.

I was struck by the way political issues were engaged with in shows taking place in the 1990s vs 2000s. Read more... )

5) Encouraging news about the Briet startup which aims to make digital books ownable by libraries instead of the hamstringing rental agreements they now have to contend with. I hope it succeeds and grows.

@etymologynerd on TikTok[youtube.com profile] etymology_nerd on YouTube (note underscore)

My first fandom is language. Let me enthuse about the Etymology Nerd Adam Aleksic. He's a short-form video presenter, essayist, and recently-published author. He started on Reddit, but attained fame on TikTok, and his YouTube is 90% shorts (but not every TikTok has made it to YouTube). It's important that his videos are accurately captioned, cause he speaks faster than an auctioneer on meth. No video description and his hand-held camera means flashing and shaking images. The videos reward multiple views.

Three Essays to Read

If you prefer prose, his Substack newsletter offers RSS at https://etymology.substack.com/feed or luck into one of his maybe-monthly essays here via [syndicated profile] etymologynerd_feed (DW feeds only go back two weeks).

Want more? My first internet #lingcomm crush interviewed Aleksic on Lingthusiasm podcast 105—both audio and transcript there, with insights into best practices in vertical video and why it feels different than old-style horizontals.

Any linguistic communicators making you happy?

"One of the most common tropes in the super hero world is that of the amount of destruction that comes when heroes and villains lock horns. We all accept that it just happens. This led to thinking: What if the owner of a popular restaurant has run it into the ground and needs the place to be destroyed for the insurance money, and invites a ton of heroes and villains to dine all at the same time in the hope that a fight breaks out? What if initially everyone tries to stay calm to enjoy the experience, but sooner or later, with that roster… the storm comes." -- J. Michael Straczynski
