The Pinky and the Brain Page, a Pinky and the Brain fanfiction and fanart archive, is being imported to the Archive of Our Own (AO3).

In this post:

Background explanation

James, the archivist, used to run and maintain a Pinky and the Brain fandom site from around 1995 to 2000. When he recently found some of the stories in an old hard drive he searched the Internet for some of them, but his searches came up empty. Rather than letting those stories sit unread he thought he would rather they be shared on the AO3 for people to enjoy and remember.

The purpose of the Open Doors Committee’s Online Archive Rescue Project is to assist moderators of archives to incorporate the fanworks from those archives into the Archive of Our Own. Open Doors works with moderators to import their archives when the moderators lack the funds, time, or other resources to continue to maintain their archives independently. It is extremely important to Open Doors that we work in collaboration with moderators who want to import their archives and that we fully credit creators, giving them as much control as possible over their fanworks. Open Doors will be working with James to import The Pinky and the Brain Page into a separate, searchable collection on the Archive of Our Own. As part of preserving the archive in its entirety, all fanfics and fanart currently in the The Pinky and the Brain Page will be hosted on the OTW’s servers, and embedded in their own AO3 work pages.

We will begin importing works from The Pinky and the Brain Page to the AO3 after September 2025. However, the import may not take place for several months or even years, depending on the size and complexity of the archive. Creators are always welcome to import their own works and add them to the collection in the meantime.

What does this mean for creators who had work(s) on The Pinky and the Brain Page?

We will send an import notification to the email address we have for each creator. We’ll do our best to check for an existing copy of any works before importing. If we find a copy already on the AO3, we will add it to the collection instead of importing it. All works archived on behalf of a creator will include their name in the byline or the summary of the work.

All imported works will be set to be viewable only by logged-in AO3 users. Once you claim your works, you can make them publicly-viewable if you choose. After 30 days, all unclaimed imported works will be made visible to all visitors.

Please contact Open Doors with your The Pinky and the Brain Page pseud(s) and email address(es), if:

  1. You’d like us to import your works, but you need the notification sent to a different email address than you used on the original archive.
  2. You already have an AO3 account and have imported your works already yourself.
  3. You’d like to import your works yourself (including if you don’t have an AO3 account yet).
  4. You would NOT like your works moved to the AO3, or would NOT like your works added to the archive collection.
  5. You are happy for us to preserve your works on the AO3, but would like us to remove your name.
  6. You have any other questions we can help you with.

Please include the name of the archive in the subject heading of your email. If you no longer have access to the email account associated with your The Pinky and the Brain Page account, please contact Open Doors and we’ll help you out. (If you’ve posted the works elsewhere, or have an easy way to verify that they’re yours, that’s great; if not, we will work with the The Pinky and the Brain Page mod to confirm your claims.)

Please see the Open Doors Website for instructions on:

If you still have questions…

If you have further questions, visit the Open Doors FAQ, or contact the Open Doors committee.

We’d also love it if fans could help us preserve the story of The Pinky and the Brain Page on Fanlore. If you’re new to wiki editing, no worries! Check out the new visitor portal, or ask the Fanlore Gardeners for tips.

We’re excited to be able to help preserve The Pinky and the Brain Page!

National Consumer Panel

[personal profile] settiai
I've participated in the National Consumer Panel since January 2014, which involved scanning my grocery purchases and doing the occasional survey in exchange for gifts cards and such. Unfortunately, I've finally had to break down and delete my account due to their continued transphobia.

When participating, you have the list the demographic information of the shopper, and the only gender options listed are Male or Female. Which, you know, is an issue if you're legally nonbinary. Especially since X is a valid gender option on US passports as well as driver's licenses in many states. In addition, they have an annual demographic survey each year where you provide more information about yourself, and - once again - the only gender options are Male or Female. If you want to participate, you have to intentionally misgender yourself, or you cannot proceed forward through the survey.

I've been reaching out to the National Consumer Panel about this issue since 2021. In both 2021 and 2022, my messages were acknowledged, and they point-blank stated that the issue was that their parent companies (NielsenIQ and Circana) dictated what gender options they were allowed to list.

In December 2022, I received the following email:

That email? Was the last communication that I received from NCP one way or another. I've continued to reach out each year when the annual demographic survey goes out with only Male and Female as the gender options listed, but I haven't received any response from NCP at all since 2022.

It's very clear at this point that the blatant transphobia of forcing nonbinary individuals to misgender themselves to use their site is intentional and won't be changing. Maybe it is the parent companies that are to blame, but the fact that NCP sent me an email in 2022 saying they were working to fix the issue and then ignored every single message that I've sent since then? Well, that says a lot. If nothing else, they're the ones who chose to simply stay quiet.

At this point, I'm done. I deleted my account earlier today, and I sent them an email making it clear why I've done so. With the current state of the world, I can't in good conscience continue to participate with an organization that's not even pretending to try to not to be transphobic.

I honestly doubt this post is going to do much of anything in the grand scheme of things (and the same's true of the thread that I posted over on Bluesky). Still, I wanted to at least make a public post about it just in case it lets even one person out there know that the National Consumer Panel shouldn't be trusted if you're LGBTIQA+.

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished!

Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

We've been on the edge of seasonal allergies or maybe a cold or maybe just reactions to the cooling weather in this household. For the fella it seems to have settled into a cold. I might have just picked up his cold. Might just be having some blahs.

We were supposed to go to a party yesterday but cancelled due to probably contagious. Had a quiet day instead. I made mac and cheese which the fella wasn't too excited about, but then had seconds and raved about it again this morning. I suspect he just hasn't had much actual mac and cheese because it was pretty basic XD

Eyes weren't cooperating well last night. Was up a couple of times with some pain, but not the terrible stabbing pain from before, so it still a win. I suspect I'm going to be extra sensitive to the seasons.

Watching the F1 this morning, might make cinnamon buns this afternoon. Might just have a nap. It'll be exciting :D

Like most Kpop groups, Le Sserafim has their own variety show called Leniverse. There are almost 70 eps so far and I've enjoyed all of them.

This 2-parter (which first aired a few months ago) is a DELIGHTFUL way to spend some time for days when in need to watch something gentle (yet still funny.) The premise is that Le Sserafim takes care of 5 of HYBE's employees' doggies for a day. There are puppies and senior dogs with each doggo having introverted or extroverted personalities.

You legit don't need to know ANYTHING at all abt Le Sserafim and/or Kpop and just sit down to watch a LOLARIOUS 2-parter episode where the doggies are the stars.

I listened this week to a non-fiction podcast episode about modern slavery in the big at-sea fish factories (2022). It has one happy ending but makes the point that this isn't just a few bad actors, but the way the business works right now, hence a $2 can of tuna. I was already aware of this, partly from novels that had opened my eyes a bit:
  • Ray Nayler's novel *The Mountain In the Sea* was great (it had my top Hugo vote that year). It had some tough stretches in it with a computer geek who gets enslaved.
  • Colin Cotterill's mystery *Granddad, There's a Head on the Beach* has a seaside Thai village and some police that are actively against investigation of part of a body that washes up. Overall more light-hearted, but a lot of dark undertones.
I'm slowly reading Sara Dykman's Bicycling with Butterflies (2021, non-fiction), which starts in Mexico and follows the migratory path of monarch butterflies (the only monarchs I'm for). I came across it when I was looking for a library copy of Barbara Kingsolver's *Flight Behavior* (2012 novel), which my book club was reading (I'd read it ~10 years ago for my library group). Both are absorbing, at least for the first half.

It Could Happen Here podcast's episodes  The Cult of Policing, Part 1 (and 2) from 2021 go into how cult-like the training and indoctrination is, in the US. Part 1 reminded me of the terrible start-up I worked at 2008-2013, with "we're your family now", mandatory fun (Ask a Manager column on that), etc. Part 2 talked about how police funding keeps taking more and more resources from community safety.

I'm a proud born-and-bred Illinoisan, a State where there is so much opposition to the Orange-Tinged Dictator. A number of you may know of the ways that my State's Governor -- JB Pritzker -- stands against the Dictator. A number of you may know that Illinois was the very first State to pass legislation opposing book bans in libraries. A number of you may be aware of the Dictator's recent direct threats of war against Chicago with his AI-generated image of Chicago in flames and his "Apocalypse Now" references. A number of you may already have seen Illinois Senator Karina Villa confronting ICE agents and telling them "This is my city. Get out of my city...." but I want to make sure that she gets seen and hopefully this video gets spread.
