Candle Arc #1 comic proof copies

Meanwhile, I've obtained a secondhand wide-format color printer locally so we'll see how setup goes.

ETA: Wide-format printer (up to 13"x19") is go! (See comments for test printouts.) I'm currently (still) setting up via Ka-Blam + Indyplanet for print on demand because I refuse to deal with fulfillment because my health is f*cked, but for DIY home zines + comics for friends & family or or prototypes or for selling locally, this should be more than sufficient.

This is a roundup of IF in the tagset, with links and nominated characters. There aren't many, but they're spread over a few categories, so can be hard to find. There are a few things I weren't sure if they counted or not, so this is just the ones I was certain of. Let me know if I've missed something and I'll add it.

For a certain type of literary man, Matthiessen was nothing less than awe-inspiring. Here was an artist who had stared death in the face and lived to write reasonably well about it. For his intimates, however, he was a more complicated figure, sometimes attentive and engaged, at other times incredibly callous. In truth, even as he neglected his family, Matthiessen was preoccupied with what it meant to be a responsible person—particularly in a world where nature, and those whose livelihoods depended on it, was threatened by the unchecked forces of modernity. His roving life inevitably prompts questions. What was Matthiessen looking for? And what was he running from? from Peter Matthiessen Travelled the World, Trying to Escape Himself [The New Yorker; ungated]

Mike Mills (director of 'C'mon C'mon' and '20th Century Women') directed an unusual 27-minute music video in 2019. It is based on the 8th studio album by the rock band 'the National', I am easy to find. It features Alicia Vikander as a woman going from birth to death. It's transcendental.

David Ehrlich sang its praises.

You may be aware of the recent leak of Young (18-40) Republican chat logs constituting of expressions of support of Nazi ideology up to and including admiration of the Führer himself, racial and ethnic slurs, and threats of violence and sexual assault. Chat logs capture offensive conversations from many Republican party workers and influencers including Vermont state senator Samuel Douglass. The plot thickens as it appears that at least one source of the leaks did so as an act of revenge after being denied a photo opportunity with TFG two years ago.

"I used to wonder if it wouldn't be better just to haul off and quit hoping. Just protect my own inner brain, my own mind and heart, by drawing it up into a hard knot, and not having any more hopes or dreams at all. Pull in my feelings, and call back all of my sentiments... and, yet … the pleasures, and the displeasures, the good times and the bad, are really all there is to me.

[They] are the yeast that always starts working in your mind again... and then, all at once, no matter what has happened to you, you are building a brand new world again, based and built on the mistakes, the wreck, the hard luck and trouble of the old one."

– Woody Guthrie, in A Race Of Singers by Bryan K Garman

My day 18: My routine falls apart at the weekend (which is fine). I wrote a short meta post for [community profile] sid_guardian and left a meta comment on it. That'll do. Having a quiet night tonight, too.

Three Poems by Naomi Shahab Nye. 1. Famous: "The river is famous to the fish. The loud voice is famous to silence, which knew it would inherit the earth before anybody said so. The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds watching him from the birdhouse. The tear is famous, briefly, to the....."

2. Making a Fist: "For the first time, on the road north of Tampico, I felt the life sliding out of me, a drum in the desert, harder and harder to hear. I was seven, I lay in the car watching palm trees swirl a sickening pattern past the glass. My stomach was a melon split wide inside my skin. "How do you know if you are going to die?" I begged my mother. We had been traveling for days. With strange confidence she answered, "When you can no longer make a..." 3. Kindness: "Before you know what kindness really is you must lose things, feel the future dissolve in a moment like salt in a weakened broth. What you held in your hand, what you counted and carefully saved, all this must go so you know how desolate the landscape can be between the regions of ..." And for a fourth, (previously) 4. Gate A4

tomosteen is a Japanese Youtube creator of stop-motion videos videos, mostly of food made of Lego, who's been featured here at least twice before (by clavdivs and by kathrymn), but I don't think has ever had a full post made about their work, unless it was by me and I've forgotten. A complete list is inside (there are a lot of them! they're all great!), but to call out just a few: the cake factory (6m), Mr. Bones' Pizza Delivery and Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl(4m).

Didn't I post about these before? I thought I did, but the duplicate links search only turned up the two previouslies above the fold. Notes: Each list is presented in order from newest to oldest. So, within the lists, videos towards the top will generally be more polished. While most of the videos involve Legos*, some involve dice, or even other things. A number of helpful toy animals, including ducks, cows, many cats and half of a gorilla skeleton (Mr. Bones) also feature. Cooking Pancakes (5m, ) Cheese Burger (5m, ) Unaju (6m, ) Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl(4m, ) Taiwanese Castella Cake (5½m) Breakfast (5m, with Mario characters, ) Orange Marmalade (9½m) Japanese Breakfast (6m, ) Chocolate Cake (5m, ) Garden Salad (2½m, ) Halloween Dinner (3m, ) Triple-Layer Cheese Cake (6m) Churros (4m) Breakfast (4m, ) Fried Shark (4m, with some dice) Pork Cutlet (2½m, dice) Oreo Cheesecake (2½m, ⚫) French Toast (2m, ) Sushi Lunch (10m, dice, ) Sushi (4m, dice, ) Salad (2m, ) Burger (2m, not lego, ) Pizza (2½m, not lego, ) Steak Dinner (3m, dice) Breakfast (3m, dice, ) Cake (3m, coins, ) "Chocolate" (1½m, marbles, horrifying, ) Golden Spaghetti (3m, not lego) Burger and Potato (4m, not lego) Factories these are highlights KitKat Factory (5½m) Cake (6m, ) Oreo (5m, ⚫) Mr. Bones' Shops these are also particularly great, all have a vague Halloween theming Rice Cake (7m, ) Pizza Delivery (4m, ) Burger (3½m, ) Popcorn (2½m, ) Other Nature Reproducing Device (4m) Cat Pen Holder Dances one (4m) and two, with Ievan Polkka (4½m) One Million Subscribers (1m) Cocktail (5m) Fireworks (1½m) Snacks (2½m) Food Chain Box (2½m) Fruit Food for Pets (2½m) Make Sushi from Zombies (2½m, )

I started listening to so many great things last year thanks to making this list, so I'm back at it again with a compilation post for podcasts, audio dramas, actual plays, and radio shows in the tagset with links on where to find them on the internet (they can usually be found in your favourite podcatcher with little issue). I've also included links to transcripts when available.

Please comment with anything I've missed!

Food has long factored in to honoring the deceased. In the Victorian era, for example, it was common for Americans to picnic in cemeteries as a way to connect with the dead, and, more practically, because of a lack of public parks. Post-funeral meals have also historically been a means for communities to celebrate a life and offer sympathy and support to the bereaved. Gravestone recipes appear to be a fairly recent concept.
