Okay, so, the "share by email" thing to generate invites seems to work reasonably well, as I got an invite under a RL gmail acct that way and promptly parlayed that into a self-invite to my fannish gmail acct.
(I was feeling all caught up to fandom and modern and suchlike last week when I got myself a tumblr to see what that was all about, and then google-plus shows up. Oy.)
I am poking around in other people's circles to find people I know, while at the same time trying not to just randomly add people because they happen to be there - I never know if that seems weird or not. (Er, likewise on Tumblr, actually.)
I'm Arduinna on Google+: https://plus.google.com/109908241133158620610 -- I think that's the right URL, if I parsed the way
astolat did hers correctly. They really have to move to names instead of numbers for those, that's wretched.
I'm aka-arduinna on Tumblr, because some chick in Denmark who goes by the name "Arduinnas" cybersquats on "Arduinna" (without the s) all the damn time, argh. Anyway, this is me there, very exciting I'm sure: http://aka-arduinna.tumblr.com/
I am very amused and grateful that the first thing people seem to be doing is uploading their default icons, and have obediently followed suit, in both places.
And now I'm all caught up to the fandom of right-this-second and will go watch White Collar.
(p.s. my RL one is under my first name and last initial, and currently has no profile pic attached; you can find it with that much info if you know me. I'll be keeping that fannish-pseud-free in case it turns into an actual Facebook replacement that I can let family know about, so I won't be adding any obvious pseuds back. And probably won't be saying much there. But it's there, anyway!)

Date: 2011-07-06 02:54 pm (UTC)Somehow it's the blogging-type platforms that kick things askew for me, in conjunction with Arduinna. Delicious and Imeem made sense! This... she's being all SOCIAL and stuff! :P

Date: 2011-07-06 05:32 am (UTC)Tumblr was utterly opaque to me -- I never understood what anyone did with it, or why anyone liked it, or how anyone found anything. I saw someone somewhere say it didn't make sense unless you had one, so I figured I'd give it a shot, and I have to say, it *is* easier to poke at if you have an account. (Although the signup is so simplified it baffled me; it took me far too long to realize that when they asked for a URL, they meant "what user name do you want to use?" and not "what's your home website?")
I still don't get things like reblogging or how "liking" something is worth anything (yeah, I don't like facebook, either *g*), but once you've got an account, the search actually works, and you can do things like search for something and then track that term; it adds itself to a list of tracked terms in your sidebar that you can click to bring up any recent posts with that tag.
So, like, for Burn Notice, I've found one person who writes interesting posts and am following her directly (which basically just means I added her to my reading page), but I'm also tracking "burn notice" as a tag, and I can click on that tag anytime to see recent posts without having to remember to type it in to the search box to go looking.
It functions sort of like the sitewide search on DW, except right there on your own page, with everything else you're looking at. It's pretty nifty. Oh, and it gives you an idea of when there are new posts on that tag, too - also nice!
Mind you, most of what gets posted really does seem to be pictures and brief one-liners, but eh -- some of the pictures are nice. *g* And some people do real posts.
I'm sure there are far more efficient ways to use it than I've managed, but just flailing around has produced some results, at least.
Google+ I have no idea about, honestly; yesterday was the first I heard of it, too, but suddenly half the people I knew were on it, and it seemed to be another thing where the only way to really see how it worked would be to get an account. Practically everything I tried clicking before I joined up wound up being a "we're in limited trial, but you can take our tour" page - wicked frustrating.
So far I'm seeing fans there, but not much actual fannish activity; I'm not sure how it'll work for fannishness, since like Facebook it really doesn't seem to be geared toward things like posting/archiving/responding to fanworks. And the search seems mediocre at best so far (which.. wtf, google). They need a good tagging system and more transparent ways to get to posts.
But if you want an invite to take a look, just let me know what addy to use! I'll share a post and hopefully that will trigger something for you.
(FWIW, google says it will trigger an email, but that doesn't seem to be happening right now; I never got an email for either account, and had to just go to the poster's page to try to see what had been shared with me, and at that point google showed me a "join" popup to fill out.)

Date: 2011-07-07 12:30 am (UTC)I think I'm some sort of endangered species - those who don't have a Facebook account.
Oh heck, sure, I'll try out Google+, even if it's just to poke around. I guess use my Yahoo addie - edithna@yahoo.com

Date: 2011-07-07 06:40 am (UTC)I just tried to share a post with you on G+ and it's not letting me. *kicks it* Maybe they figured out people were using it for invitations to a wider degree than they were expecting. It's not letting me save any email addy in the "share with" field, not even a gmail addy. Bah.
I'll try again in a day or so, though!

Date: 2011-07-09 06:03 pm (UTC)They seem to have turned the ability off, dammit -- too many people must have been using it. But I'll keep an eye out for the actual invite link, and will pop your addy in if I see it. (So far, I've managed to miss it every time, but eventually it has to show up!)
