The cartoon has better music (or rather, had better music, before they butchered it this season, sob), but despite that, I went to the movie Sunday with
therienne and
mollyamory. Which, thank god, because now we can all stop squinting and averting our eyes from the intarwebs.
Okay, so, that was a lot of fun. *g* Although argh, we thought the first extra bit was the only extra bit, so missed the second extra bit. Hmf. If only the credits weren't so freaking long (after an already long movie and a soda... *g*) Ah well, I'll see it eventually somehow.
Meanwhile, in no particular order at all:
Bruce is awesome. <3 I really liked the way Ruffalo played him, and "I'm always angry" was a fantastic line, and a fantastic take on the character. How cool to look back after that line and see the rest of his scenes slot into a different place in retrospect! Hulk is awesome, too, and now I need to go watch his movie, even though I've heard not-great things about it. Even MORE awesome, though, is that in looking up on imdb to see which of the many Hulk movies is the right one, I discovered that Lou Ferrigno -- who is forever my Hulk <3 <3 -- was the voice of the Hulk in both movies. That "puny god" comment was pure Lou. ♥ That makes me so happy. (As happy as the whole puny god scene, which, HEE. Hee hee hee. I shouldn't be so amused at someone being smashed around like a rag doll, and yet. Heeeeeee.)
I also loved Hulk and Thor fighting side by side... until Hulk punched him out of frame. bwah. Oh, Hulk.
I'm guessing that Bruce/Tony is going to be the breakout slash pairing of the film, and am very amused to see that it's already picking up a bit on AO3 -- only25 31 stories so far, but about 20 of them are since the movie started airing around the world. Heh. (Strikeouts because I started writing this up on Sunday night, and the numbers climbed over the next 20 or so hours...)
Can't blame anyone, as watching them geek out over science together was fantastic, and have cranky arguments through the screen as they flicked things around, hee. And then they rode off together! Hee, that was fab. I haven't dipped into any of the fic yet, but I hope it's good.
Tony and Steve sniping at each other till things blew up and suddenly they're working together was also great, and pretty much what I'd been expecting -- I loved how "put on your suit!" went from being mocking to being sincere in a heartbeat.
Coulson, omg. That was wrenching. Awesome, but wrenching. He better not really be dead (although if he's not, Fury's going to have to do some tap-dancing to keep from alienating the team completely, after manipulating them that severely. Also, Coulson is going to be really pissed that Fury took his precious near-mint collection of Captain America cards and dragged them through blood omg.
I haven't been a huge Avengers reader, but I've read some, and all of the Tony/Steve stuff that I remember has Tony and Pepper broken up so completely and with such good reason (i.e. - Tony) that I was a little jolted to see them clearly still involved. But I really like how relaxed and happy their relationship is. It's clearly good for Tony; he seems much more stable and centered. And Pepper is just so confident and fabulous; I loved the comfortable clothes and the fact that she's still so very clearly the CEO of Stark Industries. I'm still all over the slash pairings for this universe, but as canonical het pairings go, this one is pretty fantastic. (*waves to
ithildin, yay your pairing!*)
"His first name is Agent." heeeeeeee
During the scene where Loki's scepter was influencing everyone (with the faint exception of Tony, who seemed to keep shaking it off when he wasn't directly yelling at Steve), all I could think was "SG-1 would totally have figured this out, man". Which, granted, they weren't a team yet so didn't have a dynamic that they could see was being undermined, but still. They needed SG1! Who can spot mind-fucking a mile away and fight it off under pretty much any circumstances. ... /tangent
I loved Hugin and Munin's cameo shot, flapping past Thor and Loki on the mountainside. Hee, Papa Odin's got his eyes on his boys.
I was sort of flabbergasted that Hawkeye spent so much of the movie in Loki's thrall, although man, did that help make it possible for Natasha to shine, which she did in spades. I love her interrogation technique.
I did catch Loki calling her "quim", which I had a bad eye-rolly moment of "oh, *seriously??*" at, but eh, I mentally stuck it the in Asgard-culture lingo box and let it go. Although if it catches on as an insult against women because people think Loki's cool and says cool things, Joss goes on my shitlist.
Annnyway. It really is weird seeing the movie after reading a bunch of fanfic, and realizing that, say, Cap hasn't really started adjusting yet and is still in the punching-all-the-things stage. Heh. I did love the line of heavy bags, though, and that he carries one around with him. For emergencies, I guess... And he was adorable when he caught the flying monkeys reference, heeeeee. Also yay he got to be team leader! And coordinate the civilian rescue!
Loki. Man, that boy is never going to be right. And yet he so clearly so badly just wants to belong, even if he can never accept what Thor's offering. (oh my god, fanfic has ruined me, I can't type that with a straight face even though I mean, you know, CANONICAL BROTHERHOOD)
Anyway, I saw someone somewhere say that Loki read to her as a kid pushing desperately at his boundaries to see if mom and dad (and bro...) will still love him even if he does this, and THIS, and yeah, I can totally see that reading. Of course the problem is his boundary-pushing is psychopathic and murder-y, so.
... wow these really are random reactions. *kof*
In the end, I wanted more time for everyone; always a problem in an ensemble, and they did do a good job of putting the focus on everyone, but argh want more. At least in the next movie they'll already be a team, so there won't be such a long setup needed. (Even though I liked the setups! It was great, getting the little glimpses of everyone's lives as they got called in. *hands*)
I'm looking forward to the next set of movies; hopefully for the next Avengers they'll actually be in Avengers Mansion, because between fanfic and AEMH it's wigging me out a bit that the movie versions don't live together. I'm hopeful about that Avenger-y A left on the Stark Tower, though!
Relatedly, wooooooo we're gonna get Black Widow backstory!
'Black Widow' movie will focus on the heroine's origin
I was sure they wouldn't give us a movie for her at all, because, you know, she's female. But yay, already confirmed! \o/

Date: 2012-05-08 04:20 am (UTC)RDJ pushed for Pepper in this because he said she's what grounds Tony, and I think that really shined through. I did really enjoy the relationship between Bruce and Tony, and think that Tony has Bruce safely ensconced in the best of the best that SI can offer. It was a very sweet side of Tony that I loved them bringing out in this.
Do not believe Coulson is dead, and he's going to be ticked off over his cards!
Tom said in an interview that Thor II will deal with Loki's redemption and I think the way they pointed out Natasha's past was a precursor to that.
Natasha rocked in this! The scene where she's literally shaking after the Hulk incident, but pulls it together to go save Clint is one of my fave scenes in the movie.

I want Black Widow and Hawkeye movies... So much so, that I'm writing them in my head. Maybe they'll show up on AO3 someday...
