In completely puzzling news, Roland Emmerich is hoping to do a Stargate movie reboot/sequel, as a trilogy of movies. As far as I can tell from other articles, he plans to completely ignore the almost 15 years' worth of existing tv canon, and just go back to what he had in 1994.

I mean, I liked the movie a lot! But seriously, at this point the tv universe has completely eclipsed it, and I have no idea how he could do a trilogy without pulling in some kind of "and it turns out Ra wasn't alone after all", which kinda brings you right to the Goa'uld as presented in Stargate SG-1, so... the hell?

Also, hey, go Hollywood on this drive to originality. This reboot notion came along with the sequel for Independence Day, for its 20-year anniversary.

ETA, unrelatedly, cesperanza's cunning plan to get people posting is ridiculously effective. I'm sitting in a living room with therienne and mollyamory, and about half an hour ago all the tv-watching and chatter ended as we realized that whoops, it was 11, and time to start writing our posts for the day. So now there's nothing but typing and time-checks going on. Heh.

But the best part of Stargate, at this point, is the complicated history it has. *sigh*

I'm really enjoying trying to post every day. I think I missed one, but just doing the exercise has been loads of fun.

I know! The only reason I watched SG-1 in the first place was because I loved the movie, but at this point the universe is so much richer and deeper.

I've managed to post every day, although it's been by the skin of my teeth a time or two. I'm convinced that if I miss one, my brain will take it as permission to skip whenever I want. *g*

I'm so boggled by this reboot plan - yay because I loved the movie & it's bound to be fun and ridiculous.... but seriously? Who would be O'Neil (1 L; no sense of humour)? They'd have to do all new characters or it'll just be a weird AU. Weeeeird, man.

It'd be like remaking orig BUFFY. Jeez, movie people - leave my fave cheese flicks alone o__o!

I know, it's going to be weird no matter how he does it. Even if he goes for all new characters, it's just -- what's the point, really? I don't think there's a particularly large audience out there that loved the movie but didn't like the show -- some, sure, but the show's fanbase is much, much wider, I should think.

I've heard that the original creators absolutely hated SG-1 and thought that it violated all their ideas for what the characters were like and how the series was supposed to go, so they've been wanting to reboot it for years. Which I've always found slightly ridiculous, because yes, the TV series is silly, but it's not as if the original movie is grand high literature. ;P

That said, I can't even imagine how weird this is going to be. I expect to mainly ignore it. But who knows, maybe it'll be really great and breathe new life into the fandom.

Wow. I like the movie a lot, and even rewatch it every now and again, but I adore the series. I suspect if I try to watch these movies I'm going to have some severe cognitive dissonance. No idea how they're going to manage them without at most doing a slight AU of SG-1.
