arduinna: a photo of Earth from Mercury orbit distance, with the caption "You Are Here" (perspective)
I'm working from home today, which I love doing - I get to wear comfy clothes, and scritch my cat, and save on gas.

Usually, this is a scheduled thing. Today was a surprise, as my landlord called me last night to say he was bringing in a photographer (from the insurance company) to take pictures of my living room and bathroom, to see what sort of damage got done in this winter's storms. We had ice dams, see.

If you're not from snowy climes, ice dams are what happens when too much snow and ice builds up on your roof, and your gutters are completely clogged. The warmth of your house starts to melt the ice from underneath, but there's no place for the runoff to go -- so it goes into your walls.

We've had them before; the worst was the winter of 1995/96, when I left pots out in my living room for about two weeks as my ceiling dripped and dripped and dripped, and I kept a wary eye on my damp bedroom wall. I try not to think about the water damage to the walls; it's not my house, and my landlord didn't think it was a problem.

This time, I had water dripping in my living room again. But for the first time ever, I also had water dripping in my bathroom. The only saving grace was it ran down the walls into the tub, so at least I had a built-in pot sitting there to collect it all.

This is why it dripped:

pictures from Snowpocalypse 2011 )

Yes, if you're wondering, you are actually seeing ice stuck to the walls all the way down the sides of the house, and those windows are coated in ice half an inch or more thick. So we didn't just have water coming in from where the eaves meet, we had it coming in everywhere.

Thank god, not long after I took these we had some warm days that melted it all off. (Well. Everything came off the walls. There was still some ice and snow on the roof and in the gutters; that took a few weeks to clear out completely. And the icicles took a couple of days to crash all the way down. That was exciting.)

It's not like snow is unusual around here in the winter. But usually it's more spread out, and things melt back in between storms - there's usually snow along the sides of the road, but the snowbanks are generally only a foot or two high, with an extra foot or so on the corners where the plows pile things up. This winter? The snow that wasn't plowed (or shoveled) up high was at a good 3-4 feet (and wasn't so much snow anymore, as compressed, icy hard-pack). Anywhere people were dumping snow from shovels or plows could be twice that or more (and also compressed and icy).

Here is a picture of a friend of mine, about 5'4", standing in front of the gates of a cemetery near my house a few years ago, on a warm summer day:

summer, yay )

Here is a shot of that same cemetery wall, unfortunately from a different angle, in January on the same day I took the house pics.

winter, woe )

Y'know, looking at it now, it doesn't look that bad? But ye gods, it was awful at the time. There was so much snow that even main roads barely had room for two lanes; back roads, forget it, all you could do was pray you didn't meet anyone coming the other way, because one of you was either backing up or driving into a snowbank to get out of the way. Let us not speak of the joys of having unassigned street parking, and neighbors who don't believe in shoveling.

Fun winter. *g*

So yay for spring, and being able to sit around in short sleeves with some of my windows open. And who knows, maybe my bathroom and living room will be repainted/re-papered this year, woo, which they desperately need. Maybe all that ice and snow will have been (sort of) worth it.

In other news, Earth is sitting in a space-time vortex, for reals. No, really for reals. NASA just proved it.

That is so damn cool.

It's been confirmed by BBC News that Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith in Doctor Who and her own spinoff show, died today.

Sarah Jane was my hands-down favorite companion for decades, until Donna came along, and then I loved them both about the same. But Sarah Jane was and is my soft spot. Watching her come back in School Days made me ridiculously happy; watching her spinoff makes me even happier. She is just so cool. She's smart, and strong, and funny, and doesn't take any guff from anyone.

Part of that is down to the writers, of course, but most of it is down to Elisabeth Sladen's performance. She was amazing, and she made you believe that Sarah Jane could do absolutely anything.

She was about 61 years old in this picture. And she could kick your ass from here to Sunday if she wanted.

[community profile] ao3some -- This is a new, completely unofficial comm for fans of the AO3 to get together and talk about whatever -- share codes, talk about features we like or don't like, how we use the archive, tips/tricks, tagging philosophies, news, etc.

[community profile] ao3_skins -- Relatedly and also unofficial, for sharing archive skins and other extras.

[community profile] fancake -- This is a repeat from a month ago, but I'm having a blast with it, and it's really starting to take off. This is a themed recs community, where anyone can rec fanworks based on that month's theme (new themes start up on the 15th of each month).

The first three themes were amnesia, telepathy, and superpowers, and generated about 60 recs each; the fourth theme was crossovers/fusions, and generated over 200 recs in 175 different fandoms. The current theme (just started today) is genderfuck, and has generated 9 recs already as I type this.

[community profile] fannish_library_fest -- The fest runs from April 15 to April 30, and has just opened for posting. It's to celebrate "fans and characters as keepers, organizers, and preservers of knowledge" (how fans organize things like archives, delicious, recs lists, bookmarks, wikis, etc.; how characters/sources use things like libraries/records/archives/oral histories/memoirs/personal papers/etc.). Anything relating to that is welcome: meta of all kinds, fanworks of all kinds, recs, questions, you name it.

Spotted this on Latest Things - this is fantastic. There's a cat demanding pettins... from dolphins.

So, for the record, I don't like this show, for a variety of reasons. I watched the first several episodes and largely gave up, and the random ep here and there that I tried to watch after that just confirmed that decision; I stopped even looking for SG-1 characters showing up in it, and it went completely off my radar.

Today, [personal profile] ladysorka put up a highly abridged version of the latest ep, with just the guest stars, and I couldn't resist.

Fair warning: My reaction to the show hasn't changed.

So I start watching, and spoilers )

More cheerily, I keep getting spam for "ReplicaCartier watches", and reading it as "RepliCarter watches". Heh.
arduinna: field of Amazing Race clue boxes (TAR)
I have a giant post that I've been adding to for, um, weeks now, about the shows I'm watching. It's getting ridiculous, so I'm just going to pull sections and post as I finish them up instead of trying to get it all done before posting the entire thing.

So since TAR was the last thing I watched, TAR is the first thing to get posted. I'm not going back and reworking these; this is what I wrote up week by week.

Rambly spoilers below for each episode to date!

It has been a long, long time since I've had to actually sign up during the rush, one way and another. Very tense! But also very fun. I'm still waiting on my confirmation, but I'm pretty sure I made it in; I hit submit within the first 90 seconds or so, I think, and that's always been safe so far.

Just got my confirmation! YAY!!

oh god, that means vid deadlines are soon, ack

I haven't done one of these in ages, but figured this was a good time to spread the word about some recs communities. These are all open to any fandoms, any genres, any ratings.

[community profile] bestthingever is for recs of stories (and only stories, no other fanworks) that are no more than three months old; anyone can post.

[community profile] fanart_recs is, as you might suspect, for reccing fanart. This one's run more along crack_van lines, with reccers signing up for a month to rec in their fandoms.

[community profile] fancake is a themed rec community, where anyone can rec stories based on that month's theme. It's mainly fic-based, but any fanworks are welcome to be recced. Themes so far have been amnesia, telepathy, and superpowers, and a few times a year there's an amnesty period for reccing things under any previous theme. There's currently a poll to determine the next theme; I'm rooting for crossovers/fusion, myself.

[community profile] list50 is for 50 recs at a time (or shorter lists during "minilist" challenges), on a reccer-chosen theme. The recs are generally just one line each - title, fandom, and link to story are the only required things, although people can add more info if they want. Anyone can post here.

And bonus community, which is restricted to gen fanfic but which is open to any fandom and apparently any rating:

[community profile] gen_rec It's a little quiet right now, but I'd love to see this pick up, since I've only just discovered it. *g*

Korra!

There's a new official image for Korra out, and she looks amazing:

Promotional image of Korra, waterbending and firebending at the same time

She clearly has a lot more training than Aang did - firebending with one hand while waterbending with the other! This is going to be so cool.

There's also a cast list out:

Janet Varney as KORRA
Kiernan Shipka as JINORA
Daniel Dae Kim as HIROSHI SATO
David Faustino as MAKO
Seychelle Gabriel as ASAMI
Lance Henriksen as LIEUTENANT
JK Simmons as TENZIN

They named a character Mako. ♥ (snf)

I watched Big Eden this week - it's been on my mental to-watch list since I saw [personal profile] gwyn's vid for it a few years ago, and it was every bit as sweet and warm and happy-making as I'd hoped it would be.

What I was not expecting was a scene that showed off Tim Dekay's very nice abs. Bonus!

Which I felt the need to share. *g* I didn't want to bother with embedding a video, so I went with an animated gif instead. The clip is a bit long for that (and I didn't want to cut too many frames out, to keep it relatively smooth), so unfortunately the file size is a bit big. The version under the cut is the smallest I have (cropped and half-size), and it's 2.2 MB, so give it a minute to load.

pretty spoilers for a Big Eden scene *g* )

I don't want to kill anyone's bandwidth by putting it in the post, but here's a link to a larger version (still cropped, but full-size -- 7.8 MB).

For the record, this is what Peter would have looked like 10-11 years ago, back when he was dating and marrying Ell...

arduinna: Santa-hatted Momo (from Avatar the Last Airbender), saying "mo mo mo" (Yuletide)
Yuletide was a little dicey for me this year in terms of timing, but I wanted something positive to focus on, so stuck it out, and I'm glad I did.

I wound up writing Invisible Man, which led to a whole lot of ep-watching and nostalgia. Man, I love that show.

Paying the Rent (4361 words) by faviconArduinna
Fandom: Invisible Man (TV 2000)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Bobby Hobbes, Darien Fawkes
Summary:

The Agency has a new landlord, and it's time to pay the rent.

Many, many thanks to the many betas who read this over and cheered me on and prodded where I needed prodding, especially [personal profile] dorinda, who steered me in the right direction when I was flailing.

And as so often happens during Yuletide, I got a story in return! Actually, I got two, which I couldn't be more chuffed about.

My main story was for Crusoe, a wonderful show that got far, far too little fannish attention. (Here, have a vid. See how pretty and fun?) [archiveofourown.org profile] pwincess did something I would not have expected at all, and went for a five-things set of AUs, all centered around Friday and Crusoe and how they connect. <3

Death and Taxes (3426 words) by faviconpwincess
Fandom: Crusoe
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary:

Five ways Crusoe and Friday could have fallen in love and one way they did

The Treat I got was for Night Court, for which there is also far too little fiction, although the lack of fandom makes more sense to me. But I adore Harry and Dan, and was delighted to get a lovely story about them making it over that final hurdle and admitting how they feel about each other. <3

Nothing in My Hat, Nothing Up My Sleeve (2024 words) by faviconCousin Shelley
Fandom: Night Court
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dan Fielding/Harry Stone
Characters: Dan Fielding, Harry Stone

Also, man, how much do I love the AO3's automated features? Between the share function to make posts like this easier, and the download button so I can do all of my reading on my Kindle - wow, this is awesome. Yay, designers and coders! <3 <3
arduinna: a tarot-card version of Linus from Peanuts, carrying a lamp as The Hermit (Default)

Romy is being taken today to a foster home that everyone involved is hoping turns out to be permanent. The woman taking him already has several animals so we're not positive how he'll adjust, but we're going to give it a week or two and see how it goes. If he integrates with the household, this is an ideal home for him; she's known (and loved) him for years and is familiar with his needs, and he knows and trusts her already.

If it doesn't work out, at least he won't be lonely in the interim, and we can start exploring more options. But I really hope it does; she's a wonderful woman, and would be so perfect for him! And it would be such a relief to know that all three cats are in good homes.
arduinna: a tarot-card version of Linus from Peanuts, carrying a lamp as The Hermit (Default)
My family and I have been occupied with getting ready for my sister's funeral, which was this weekend. In the meantime, [personal profile] therienne did me the huge, huge favor of getting the word out about my sister's three cats, who needed homes. That post went viral in short order, spreading to places that have boggled me, and I'm grateful to everyone who read and signal-boosted her post.

I'm very happy to report that thanks to everyone's efforts to spread the word, two of those cats went to their new home today. [personal profile] mero picked them up this afternoon, and Molly and Katie are all set now. <3

Soon to be snoozing in front of a new window instead, but still together, yay!

We're still looking for a home for Romy (Romeo), the 10-year-old male cat.

He has allergies that require monthly shots and a modified diet, and those allergies have caused him to lick off most of the fur on his belly and hind legs. But he's as sweet as can be, friendly and well-socialized and loving, and beyond the allergies he's healthy and happy. He's very person-oriented, and all he wants is a person to love who'll love him back.

If you know anyone who might want him, please have them drop me a comment; I've got anonymous commenting turned on so they don't even need openID.

And seriously, thank you so, so much to everyone who's helped spread the word about this. My sister made arrangements for the cats this summer when she discovered that her treatment hadn't worked and she wouldn't have long to live, but a few days before she died we found out that those arrangements had unexpectedly fallen through, and we didn't have time to do anything about it at that point.

We couldn't have gotten Molly & Katie into their new home without the help of so many kind people, and my entire family is grateful.

You spend the day obsessively refreshing your mail for your assignment, then when it finally appears, you open the email with a hand over your eyes in abject terror of what it might be.

Happily, mine appears to be one of the fandoms I offered to write! Go figure. *g* Hopefully, my writer has made the same discovery and is not panicking at their assignment.

Also, for anyone who wanted a button to click to default rather than having to send an email, it looks like AO3 offers just that - in the "My Assignments" page, there's a section for "Manage [work]" that lets you click either "default" or "post to fulfill".

I have no idea what happens if you click default, and I'm not going to test it. *g* But it's there!

Now to start reviewing source...

arduinna: Santa-hatted Momo (from Avatar the Last Airbender), saying "mo mo mo" (Yuletide)
Thank you so much! The thought of a story in any of these fandoms is already making me happy. Whatever you want to do with them, I'm already grateful, and the happier you are with what you write, the happier I'll be reading it. If you have an idea that you're itching to write, go for it!

I love all four of these fandoms unreservedly, so if you have a yen to explore the universe, or bring in additional characters I didn't list, it's all good.

If you want more information about my requests, though, read on - but please don't worry if your ideas go in a different direction. Optional details are optional! As long as it's for one of these fandoms, and uses the characters, you totally win at Yuletide. \o/

my fic tastes )

Why I love these fandoms

(Alphabetical, not ranked by preference! I love them all. :)

Crusoe )

The Equalizer )

Invisible Man )

Night Court )

Truly, I adore all these fandoms, and will be happy with absolutely anything you write, as long as you enjoy writing it.

And thank you, again!!
arduinna: Tim Gunn from Project Runway, chin on fist, eyebrow raised (Tim is concerned)
There are a bunch of things I keep meaning to post about (Venture Bros, omg that second to last ep was so good! Burn Notice is back! [although I haven't watched this week's ep yet so please don't spoil me *g*] Fringe! [also haven't watched this week's ep, so please don't spoil that one either, sorry!] Yuletide signups are almost live! AO3 NOW ALLOWS VID EMBEDS OMG!!! - and, you know, has shinier code in general, and tons more Yuletide stuff, but omg VID EMBEDS! Permanent URLs even if your hosting changes! YAY!!)

But the thing that causes me to actually finish a draft for once is this:

cut for image )

\o/ GO HEIDI! She looks fabulous, and as Tom and Lorenzo of Project Rungay put it:

"Ahem. As we recall, a certain Ms. Garcia threw down the gauntlet during the Project Runway Season 8 finale judging session with a derisive "I'd like to see you wear that dress, Klum."

Why, kittens. We do believe Miss Heidi Klum just gave Miss Nina Garcia the finger, figuratively (and fashionably) speaking."

HAH!

Now let's see if Nina actually wears Gretchen's godawful knit-granny-panties and hideous shiny green leather jacket combo.

There are more pics at the link - Heidi is totally showing that dress off, and looking very happy about it, too. Yay for Mondo!

(Icon totally aimed at Michael Kors and Nina Garcia, not Heidi. <3)
arduinna: blue logo for the Archive of Our Own (AO3 blue)
I wound up going through that AO3 skin I made and cleaning up the code after all, and submitted it to be public (even though I was v. nervous about it, being no kind of designer at all), and then sat around for four days fretting that it wasn't good enough. But I just checked, and as of sometime in the last 12 hours, it has been approved for public use! \o/

I am ridiculously chuffed about this. Also a little meep-y; see above re: nervous because not a designer. But mostly chuffed. *g*

There are several more there now, too, if people are looking for options.

eeeeeee
arduinna: blue logo for the Archive of Our Own (AO3 blue)
The short version of this post: I made an AO3 skin! And it is blue! \o/

longer version cut for rambling and nested screencaps )

And to answer the question I know at least a few people will want to ask, this is how you increase the margins on story text so it's not sprawling across almost your entire browser:

#chapters { margin-right: 10%; margin-left: 10%; }

Those are the settings from the screencap, to give you an idea of what percentages you want to play with.

Yay for skins!
arduinna: Neal watching Peter smile, White Collar (peter'n'neal)
I keep meaning to post about White Collar. I'm watching a lot of tv I really like, but WC is my hands-down happy place; I stop and rewind the DVR to catch the commercials, even, because just the sight of those characters makes me grin from ear to ear. I've been enjoying this season hugely, and I can't wait for eps to come back in January.

spoilers for tonight's ep )

(And in case someone is reading this who doesn't know me: please no spoilers of any sort for upcoming episodes, from plot to casting - thank you!)
arduinna: Calvin and Hobbes, gleefully sledding in black and white (sledding whee)
I found this on my Network - this is awesome. They're having so much fun, and are so good!
