Um, hi! Accidentally slipped away from DW again, as one does when the brain decides it's time to visit slump-town. And then it's always tricky to pick back up! But I'm here, having been lured back by a friend request (❤️).

+ Currently working, yay!

+ Currently sick and voice-less, boo!

+ This is a double-shift as I swapped it around to attend my dad's wedding in November. It's in Thailand, and I'll be there a full month. I plan to get absolutely kneaded into oblivion, my body will be jelly by the end of it. Just good food, swimming, and massages.

+ If I can actually manage to Get The Thing Done at home, instead of avoiding and courting disaster, it's sure to be a relaxing time. So I need to get on that, Monday morning *stern glare at self*.

+ Started reading The Archive Undying. It dropped me face first into weirdness, and I'm loving the writing. All very much appreciated.

+ We're at the tail end of the general election here in Norway, and it's looking plausible we could get a RedGreen coalition! I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but it could happen.

+ There's a new community for Community, and there's a Friday Five/intro post up, come hang.

+ Really enjoying Haley Williams' Ego Death At A Bachelorette Party and CMAT's EURO-COUNTRY. If you're looking for an absolute banger about grief, Lord, Let That Tesla Crash is at your service.

+ Working my way through Apple this trip, with Foundation being my weekly download. I'd say overall the weakest season of the three, but Demerzel is holding my interest.

+ Tonight should have a red full moon, so I'm hoping it won't be cloudy here.

1. It was still overcast this morning when I took my first walk and then the sun came out just when I got home. It was still muggy when I was out, but I'd much rather have overcast and muggy than the sun beating down on me, too.

2. There have been a couple new stalls at the farmers market recently, including a guy who makes some sort of raw granola bars. I got some a couple weeks ago and he was back again this week (I think he said he's only doing every other week right now) so I got some more.

3. We had a nice dinner at Disneyland and met up with a friend of Carla's who's here from out of town.

4. I passed through the living room and just happened to notice Molly on the lower shelf of this end table. So cute!

* I was surprised to see the Orycon booth, as sad as it was. Oregon's 45 year old sci fi and fantasy con is ending this year, next month actually. I was going to avoid the booth, but instead I talked to them and asked why. They said they are getting smaller each year and rather than hang on, they want to end on a high note and make room for something new. Also, they said they intend to attend whatever new con pops up. Maybe that is the just the stock PR answer, but the guy I spoke to seemed sincere. I am kinda impressed. Then he rambled and said that the aging leadership wasn't attracting the younger crowd and I kept my mouth shut. I did mention that I was on OFSCI for a while, but he doesn't know who I am or my history with Orycon/OFSCI.

I asked about the endowments the con has for writing scholarships, bringing in a filk guest each year, etc. He didn't know what I was talking about. But, a planned ending as opposed to a collapse hopefully means it's all being handled properly.

* Andrew was at the Kumoricon booth? With what looked like an undercut? Not going to get into why I Have Questions about this. Those questions I will never get answers to (and it might be for the best that I don't), but I am glad I talked to the Orycon people even if... actually, especially since they were not the Orycon people I used to work with.

* Last year the SPEW people were grabbing people and pulling them into their little HP area. Last year a lady grabbed me like she knew me and something was urgent and pulled me in. I was so off balance I went with her and then quickly noped out. I had decided if they did that cute RP that involved a) touching people and b) assuming people are thrilled to suddenly be in an HP photo booth I was going to be significantly less chill about it this time. Fortunately, they were not doing their RP bullshit this year. Honestly, not sure how they got away with doing that all weekend last year.

Rose City Comic Con Day 2

When I was in the line to get in there was a group of teenagers behind me. They kept smacking into me like I wasn't there or trying to sneak part of the group in front of me when the line went around corners. I don't like people pulling that shit on me because I am at the event solo and it happens a lot. Then I decided, yanno, I am going to have people bumping into me and being annoying all day because they are hyper, oblivious, entitled, actually need to for some reason, etc. I don't want to start the day out like this. So I stopped and was all 'go ahead, sick of this, go in front of me since you want to so bad' and they didn't even pretend like to be shocked or innocent. They just enjoyed cutting one (1) whole person and didn't bother the people in front of them because it was another group.

Oh No, I've Made a Huge Mistake:

Casey McQuiston, Aiden Thomas, Isa Agajanian, T Kingfisher, John Scalzi, Ryka Aoki

This was actually kinda sort a writing panel. It was more about RL events derailing book projects, or saving them, but yeah. Anyway, it was fun.

The Leyfarer's Chronicle: The Dreams of Dragons

And then there's these weirdos. They are all full time DMs at TPK Brewing, where I play D&D. The pub, drinks, etc are all these for their custom world setting and ongoing storyline with 150 players. I am one of the 150 Leyfarers doing the ongoing story. This was a lore heavy actual play... real play... live D&D thing. (I know the term is 'actual play' for these 'watch D&D played live' thingies but that term is still weird to me, so I assume it's confusing to other people as well). The guy on the far right is my group's DM.

Then I wandered a bit more and came home. I still need to pick what to do tomorrow because almost everything I want to do overlaps time-wise. There's another writing panel, the Flanaverse panel and some people talking about the ghosts of Portland.

Goodies so far:

I also got my copies of What Moves The Dead by T Kingfisher and Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston signed, but I already owned the books.

The place was packed, more that it's typically been in my experience.

I went to the Plot and Pacing Panel:

N. E. Davenport, Isa Agajanian, Casey McQuiston, Charlie Jane Anders, John Scalzi and Ryka Aoki. Amazing line up, but that many authors and that broad a topic, it was mostly just going to be some random chatter. During the Q&A session some guy asked if fanfiction was an acceptable form of writing practice or does it hurt your own voice too much. Then John Scalzi went 'Fanfiction writing is writing' and the audience cheered.

Weirdly, it was the tag end of the panel before that was more interesting about writing. They were having writers submit 'back of book blurbs' for their projects for critique and actually, the people running the panel gave interesting feedback.

Next was Sidekicks and Side Quests:

T Kingfisher, Terry Brooks, Gabriella Buba, Rachel Gillig, Aiden Thomas

This panel was more unfocused. Before the panel started Terry Brooks was walking around thanking people for showing up to his panel, but I had no idea who he was. I actually thought he was just a guy making jokes and not an actual panelist. Between Terry just giving advice that may or may not have anything to do with the topic, people being excited to be on a panel with Terry and T Kingfisher answering a question on research by explaining in depth the purpose of caterpillar inflators while Aiden looked like he was about to tap out... yeah, amazing line up... but if you wanted to go to learn about writing in general or these topics in particular, lol no

I roamed the exhibit hall a bunch. It was amazingly crowded.

We bought a few Swiss gourmet apples at the farmers market on Thursday, because [personal profile] adrian_turtle likes them, and I like trying new (or new-to-me) apples.

I tried one this afternoon. It was OK, but nothing special: crisp, moderately juicy, and tarter than I generally like. I thought [personal profile] cattitude might like it, because he likes tart apples, but his verdict is that there wasn't enough flavor there, though what there was, was good.

I'm going to leave the other two for Adrian, and eat Zestars; we bought some of those yesterday.

18 Years of OTW

September 5 is the OTW's birthday and this year, we are turning 18 years old! To celebrate this event, let's look back at some of the milestones the OTW's projects - AO3, TWC, Open Doors, Fanlore, and Legal Advocacy - have achieved over the years:

  • As the first OTW Project, Legal Advocacy was launched in 2007, the same year as the organization itself.
  • In February of 2008, TWC released its first call for papers! Shortly after, in June, Fanlore was launched.
  • In late 2009, AO3 first went live. Roughly one year later, AO3 reached 10,000 users, with growth of the community accelerating ever since.
  • In 2011, Open Doors was launched, and began importing archives in 2012.
  • In 2015, the first ever International Fanworks Day was observed.

Since then, our projects have only continued to flourish and grow. AO3 has more than 9 million users and 15,730,000 works. Fanlore has nearly 80,000 pages and has seen over 1,657,000 edits. TWC is on its 45th issue. Open Doors has imported more than 100 archives, containing over 164,000 fanworks. Legal Advocacy fights hard for the rights of fans each and every day, responding to dozens of questions every year, filing Amicus Curiae briefs, joining coalitions, and more. All this and more is thanks to the support of fans worldwide; it wouldn't be possible without you!

If you're interested in how you can help, there are many ways for you to support us and our fannish community, and you can learn about some of them today by participating in our 18th Anniversary Bingo! On the card below you can see sixteen ways to contribute to the OTW or one of its projects. Some of these you might already have done, or are doing. You can cross those off!

OTW Bingo Card. 4x4 Squares in order top left to bottom right. Read a Fanlore page. Shared an OTW social media post. Commented under a fanwork this week. Found a press article about the OTW. Checked out our Fan Studies bibliography. Shared some recs with people. Followed the OTW on a social media channel. Read about the history of the OTW. Downloaded a work from AO3. Checked out some recent OTW news posts. Subscribed to OTW news by mail. Created or used a site skin on AO3. Created an AO3 account. Edited or created a Fanlore page. Donated to become a member. Checked out a paper on fanworks.

Once you have a Bingo, we'd love for you to tell us what you did to get it! Tag us on social media using #18YearsOTW or comment below, and let us know. We're excited to hear from you!

Sharing my method for saving unpublished posts on Dreamwidth since I haven't seen it mentioned before:

It's basically just creating a community for yourself with all posts set to private (here's how). That'll serve as a repository for posts only visible to you that you can organise with tags exclusive to the community. I also use my private community to store post templates with code and put in a sticky post a bunch of often used emoji along with other symbols to copy and paste when I'm on my PC.

Does anyone know of any other less known methods for saving drafts on Dreamwidth? ☺️

For reasons as yet unknown to medical science, although I am doing my best to get medical science to find them out, I am in the acutely worst shape I have been in since the summer of 2023 and it is devouring all of my time. Have some links.

1. In music still in situ on my computer, I have had the Punters' "Jim Harris" (1997) since 2005 when I believe it to have been one of the fruits of a now-deceased music community on LJ. It is not a variant on Child 243; it was contemporarily written by Peter Leonard of Isle Valen about a local schooner fender-bender in 1934. I discovered last year that it's got a Roud number and I have never gotten over the way its last verse turns from traditionally recounted maritime mini-disaster to Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi:

It's all right when the wheel is going up, but when she turns for to go down
You all might meet with the same sad fate as Jim Harris in Paradise Sound

The folk tradition being what it is, this song is naturally the only thing I know abour its eponymous captain, which is rough.

2. I should not have read this article about the Instagram filter valley of the current rejuvenative craze for deep-plane face-lifts no matter what because one of the reasons I have trouble being read as younger than my age is that I have worked very hard to reach this one, but toward the end of the piece I hit an anonymously quoted surgeon, "When you look at someone else with an elite face-lift . . . all you should be thinking is, How did you age better than me? The goal is you want to look genetically dominant to other people," and at the notion that eugenics should be aspirationally mixed with ageism, I just wanted that surgeon to be operated upon by Dr. Einstein after an all-night open-bar horror marathon. I felt better after dialing up the grainily inimitable footage of Pamela Blair's "Dance: Ten; Looks: Three" (1975).

3. Thanks to listening to Arthur Askey, I became curious about the origins of the musical have-a-banana phrase which diffused decades ago from music hall into general pop culture and apparently the best guess is a Rocky Horror-style audience improvisation that has now endured as a meme for more than a century. Good for it.

I just want to sleep and read books and write about movies. Who's even asking for a small fortune?

The compost pile in the back of the garden is cooking away.  It is officially in the HOT compost category.  I grabbed a handful of it to inoculate a different pile and it was too hot to hold comfortably.  So that pile is officially off limits for new material.  That meant I needed to clean out the other side, the left hand side. The left side had several wheelbarrows full of failed compost sitting forlornly on the bricks. That pile had composted fast and hot and then just stopped and failed to finish the process.  Nothing I did helped.  By this time it was a heap of hydrophobic materials.  I decided to move the pile out of the official composting area and try again.  As I dug material out I watered, and watered and watered it, using the shovel to chop up chunks. It was slow going.  Once I had a damp pile I got the PH meter out and took a reading.  6.0.  Which isn't bad, but it is on the acidic side and it made me wonder if part of the problem was that the whole mess was too acidic to continue composting.  The original pile had a lot of oak leaves in it, which are pretty acid.   Step two was to add horse manure from the corrals (fresh material to attract microbes) and handfuls of wood ash from the fireplace to reduce the PH.  Here is the pile as I was adding material.  In the background Firefly has done an excellent job of creating a fire break around the garden.  This winter I have to burn that little pile of branches...Pics )

Hi, and welcome to the Guardian drama Slo-Mo Rewatch! Join us to watch half an episode a week (at your leisure) and then come and chat about it here in comments. If you already know the drama, of course you can jump in without rewatching if you prefer!

Episode 1, up to 22:28

Summary
The prologue explains Haixing's history. Professor Shen Wei presents a public lecture and turns down a job offer. Guo Changcheng reports to the SID in the middle of the night, where Zhao Yunlan is outrageous and the rest of the team scares Changcheng into fainting. Twice. An unseen threat chases Li Qian through the night. Zhao Yunlan investigates a murder at the university, where he and Da Qing dangle Guo Changcheng out a window while they discuss the case. Guo Changcheng's cries draw Shen Wei's attention. Cat!Da Qing gets strokes. Shen Wei is very intense, and Zhao Yunlan notices. Afterwards, Zhao Yunlan interrogates Li Qian about the murder; Shen Wei comes to pick her up for class and further arouses Zhao Yunlan's suspicions in the process. Zhao Yunlan sends Guo Changcheng to tail Shen Wei.

Quote
ZYL: By the way, I'm Zhao. I'm handling this case. What's your name, sir?
SW: No "sir". I'm Shen. Shen Wei. I teach here.
ZYL: Shen Wei? A good name.

Detail
I love the contrast between:

Zhao Yunlan: Damn Fatty.
Li Qian: What a fat black cat!
Guo Changcheng: It can speak?! *faints*
Shen Wei: *strokes* This is a very intelligent cat.

:D :D :D

Questions
Do you have any thoughts or feelings about the prologue? What was your first impression of Shen Wei -- good guy or bad guy? First impression of Zhao Yunlan -- would you trust him? Do you empathise with Guo Changcheng's fear? (If someone turned into a cat in front of you, would you be terrified, delighted, or both?) When Guo Changcheng falls from the window, is he unhurt or does Shen Wei surreptitiously heal his ankle? From Zhao Yunlan's POV, what is the most suspicious thing about Shen Wei at this point?

Do you have a favourite scene or quote? If you're familiar with the novel, any thoughts about how the drama adaptation starts? The absolute perfection of the casting? :D :D :D Anything else?

(These are all just conversation starters - feel free to answer all, some, or none, and to say as much or as little as you like! You don't have to be keeping up with the rewatch to join in!)

And here is our schedule, where you can sign up to host a post!

What Happened to Lucy Vale?
The ending of this was unsatisfying. And the narration, switching between Lucy's mother's POV and a POV titled "we" that is representing a group of Lucy's schoolmates, didn't really do it for me. The "we" sections were the majority and the kids were pretty awful, which made for unpleasant reading. I can't say I'd recommend it.

Suddenly a Murder
This ended up being better than I thought it would, but still only just okay, not great.

The Oddly Pedestrian Life of Christopher Chaos vol. 1-2
A Tyrian series I wasn't previously aware of. But it seems that this is just an idea of his that someone else is writing, rather than him being the main author, so maybe that's why I'm not liking it as much as his other stuff, or it might just be that it's closer to mainstream superhero comics than his usual and I'm not that into that. But it's queer horror, as usual, and it's not not interesting. Curious to see where it goes after this.

Hey, Kiddo: How I Lost My Mother, Found My Father, and Dealt with Family Addiction
Graphic novel memoir about a guy raised by his grandparents while his mom was mostly in jail or rehab when he was growing up. I liked it.

Uprooted: A Memoir About What Happens When Your Family Moves Back
Graphic novel memoir about a girl who was raised in Canada but moves back to Hong Kong with her family in middle school. I liked this one, too.
