In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like.

Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat among yourselves.

The intent of these posts is to chat and have some fun and, sure, vent a little as required. Reasoned debate is fine, as always, but if you have to ask if something is going over the line, think carefully before posting please.

Normal board rules about conduct and behaviour still apply, of course.

It's been suggested that, if discussing spoilers for recent media events, it might be advisable to consider using the rot13 method to prevent other members seeing spoilers in passing.

The world situation is the world situation. If you're following the news, you know it as much as I do, if you're not, then there are better sources than scans_daily. But please, no doomscrolling, for your own sake.

There are about a half dozen, deeply concerning, US political points I could make on healthcare and vaccines alone (to pick a subject at random), but I suspect you don't me to raise them.

British bargain-bin-Trump-wannabe Farage, appeared in front of a committee in the US Congress, it did not go well for him, though it has to be noted that the UK media did not cover the excoriation bit much, which is a shame.

Those missing Star Trek Prodigy may (or may not) be consoled at knowing there is a new animated Trek in town, albeit one with a rather different target audience, "Star Trek Scouts" . I can't wait for TrekCultures "Ups and Downs" on THIS one! :)

And this weekend JemCon seemed like a good time to release the new synthwave re-recording of "Glitter and Gold"

A new LEGO Batman video game from Traveller's Tales is coming!!

I wish merely to register my pleasure that when I went looking for the uncredited actor playing the dean of the law school in the early scenes of Winterset (1936), I found that Murray Kinnell had the kind of Wikipedia biographer who includes short reviews with their subject's stage and screen resume. "An unusual role for Kinnell as a derelict one-time gentleman; the film opened in July 1931." "'No man is a hero to his valet', as Kinnell's character in this murder mystery could testify." "Kinnell as yet another butler, though this time with an unexpected flourish." I am much more used to finding this kind of partisanship on social media: with no prior attachment to an actor whom I did not notice previously in a handful of pre-Codes, just its enthusiasm makes me want to see these lovingly noted small parts even when a non-zero quantity of Charlie Chan seems to be involved. I hope Kinnell would have appreciated his future, however microscopic fandom.

1. Today marks one full week since I decided to start taking an early morning walk. I have been enjoying it very much and it currently works with my sleep and work schedules, so I'll be keeping it up. We've been in the habit of taking an evening walk every day for years, and a year or so I ago started making it two walks a day on weekends, but I'd never tried to make it a daily thing.

2. Today I actually took a walk at lunch as well, but I'm not sure how often I'll do that, at least in this weather. It was cooler than it has been, but still in the low 80s, and the area around my work doesn't have a lot of shady streets so I was in direct sun most of the time and ended up getting back to work sweatier than I'd prefer, but I did stop at 85C and get a delicious lavender taro latte on my way, so that was nice. I will definitely be taking a lunchtime walk on cooler days, and maybe even some not so cool days, depending on how I feel. It felt good to get up from my desk for more than just a quick run to the restroom or to go downstairs and buy a drink (I do get up for a few minutes every hour, but it's still a lot of sitting).

3. We had a nice dinner at Disneyland. The park was actually not that crowded and the weather was really pleasant (we didn't get down there until around eight, so the sun was down, but it wasn't as muggy as it has been the last few times we've been at night, including Saturday) and even traffic getting down there was pretty light.

4. Woke up to find Gemma in bed with me the other morning. Usually it's Molly!

Started off spooky season by seeing Lost Boys on the big screen, on an original print of the film. Original, and very beat up.

It was cool to see it on the big screen. Visually, the movie is stunning. Not in an 'every frame a picture' sort of a way. The individual compositions are okay, but the visual storytelling is impressive.

I saw some people from book club and sat with them. They were out as a group for someone's birthday, so I accidentally crashed his birthday, but it was chill. Then, the bus home didn't seem to exist, so I took a Lyft home.

At one point Purrcy was looking very regal as he stre-e-e-e-etched his arms out in front of him & crossed his paws, but by the time I got over to take his picture his expression was kind of vacant. That probably just makes it more authentically royal.

Purrcy the tuxedo tabby sits on the back of a brown sofa, stretching his arms out in front of him almost as long as his entire body and crossing his paws delicately at the end.

A couple weeks ago, we wanted to get out and do something, but also got a late start on the day. We headed to the local greenbelt, since it's reasonably close and we haven't been there in a while.

A very cute bumblebee.

My other favorite insect from the day: a really big moth hanging out on a tree. :)

Eleven more pictures, including more insects and spiders:

One of the road bridges over the greenbelt path has some pretty mosaics.

Another of the mosaics.

(There are two more mosaics on the other side of the bridge, but someone was sitting there, haha.)

Crossing the creek.

There were many big, impressive spider webs along the path! With big, impressive spiders in them! I didn't realize until after looking at the picture that this one had a snack. :)

Not a spider, but a daddy longlegs! This one was almost orangey in color, which was neat.

These beetles were just face-first, going to town in the flowers. It was very funny. I believe these are "bumble flower beetles."

Some huge carpenter ants!

Some lovely little sweet peas in the overgrown/abandoned garden area behind some of the apartments.

Hollyhocks have definitely been having A Year! I saw them all over Santa Fe, and in a ton of gardens this year, and even a bunch of landscaping. This one is also in the abandoned garden.

A very charming little duck swam over just as it started raining.

I'm really not a fan of the influx of Japanese beetles that we've started having each year. They're terribly destructive. However, this one was very interesting - almost pink on the front segment instead of the usual green color!

It was also a two snake day, which was delightful! I didn't get good pictures of either of them, but Alex spotted one pretty large garter snake, which I got to see as it headed into the underbrush. Then I was leaning down to look at a little spider that scuttled across the sidewalk... and wound up pointing directly at a tiny baby garter snake that had been just at the edge of the path. Very tiny and cute!

It was a lovely day out. We got caught in a tiny drizzle, but not bad. It was pretty humid (especially for here!) so we were all a bit sticky by the end.

Beth and I went to Worldcon! And then spent another week in Seattle.

I had a great time at Worldcon, much better than last year at Glasgow where I spent almost all my time at the Business Meeting That Would Not Die. This year all but one short session of the BM was held online & ahead of time, it was *great*. A bunch of the Usual Suspects complained that the online meeting was scheduled Against the Rules and we should have been able to vote about it (and wait another year) but I say, meh, this way I got Worldcon back & also attendance was 3 times as high as at regular Business Meetings, so there.

Beth put her foot down & said I couldn't go to Worldcon without getting a scooter, and she was completely right. In the first place, any venue that can hold 6-10K people has really long halls, that's just math. In the second place, downtown Seattle is REALLY hilly.

The con wasn't able to rent scooters (due to competition from cruises) so I rented one myself that was brought to the hotel, and wow ... it's been decades since I've had that sense of freedom and speed. Once I got an experienced scooter-driver to tell me how to get in&out of elevators, that is. I'm seriously considering bringing a scooter-costume to LACon, dressing the scooter up as a rocket ship, because you can go really fast down the hallway (if it's mostly empty, of course).

It's so cool! And it's been so long, so very long since moving around has been anything but painful & draining for me, it was really freeing to have it be *fun*.

Martha Wells was the Worldcon Guest of Honor, so she spoke a bunch of times and I was one of a big crowd of people following her around like ... not ducklings, ducklings don't travel in enormous mobs. Devotees, anyway. And we got together and talked, and shared stickers and things, & talked about Murderbut & her other works.

And WOW, I was seriously shocked & disappointed at how many fen over the age of 50 seem incapable of not calling Murderbot "he", wtf. Although Mr Dr Science consistently starts off using they/them, then has to correct himself.

In addition to Martha Wells, I went to panels on "Food in History—The Impact of Spice" (packed to the gunwales! it was great), "Beyond the Torment Nexus" (even more packed, people sitting on the floor), "Centuries of Marriage" (disappointingly centered on Western Europe in the last 500 years, except Shauna Lawless had good info on Ireland c 11th-12th c, with much more marriage flexibility than WEur standard). Maybe I went to others? It's kind of a blur.

I saw [personal profile] gwyn ! I saw [personal profile] seekingferret ! I saw [personal profile] bethbethbeth ! there were probably other people but cons make my brain kind of mushy. And there were a bunch of other people who aren't on DW, too.

I got to cruise through the dealer's room and chat with vendors every time I bought something. I made several passes through the Art Show to look and to bid on some small things -- I'm under orders from Mr Dr not to get more things that go on walls until I find more walls to put them on. I chatted with people about the upcoming Worldcons in LA (Anaheim) & Montreal, and possible ones in Edmonton, Brisbane, and Dublin. It's doing to be a LONG time after LA before there's another one in the US, folks.

We stayed in Seattle for another week after Worldcon. One of the things I did was travel to West Seattle and have lunch with [personal profile] gwyn under relaxed conditions, which was really nice. Then toward the weekend I went out toward Bellevue and stayed there for a few days, including finally meeting [personal profile] cruisedirector & her husband, after knowing them online for *decades*. It was great to see them at last, and their Home By The Lake, and to talk about life and fandom for a few hours.

A plan to get together with a bunch of people from college got cancelled when the hostess came down with covid, but that just meant I had a bit more time to rest & write up a few things before getting Beth, dropping off the car, and heading back to the airport for a frankly exhausting trip back. Beth & I continue our NOVID record: we didn't mask *all* the time, just in most of the crowded situations (airport, airplane aka flying virus box, inside crowded rooms at con), on Whale Watch boat. Oh, we saw orcas! They were super cool, totally worth it.

The cat was *very* glad to see us. Mr Dr was, too: he did better at taking care of himself than he'd been last year, while still failing at some tasks.

I haven't done an update in a while (again) because life has been busy (as always) and, normally, by Sunday night I'm completely exhausted. Sitting down to write can be fun, but it also requires a mental effort that I can't always muster. A few months ago, I was still doing reaction threads on my blorbo account, but I noticed that doing that can make it take me longer to get through an episode. That's why I haven't done it with the series I've watched lately, though I think that has also made me talk a bit less about the things I enjoy.

Since my last update, I've finished watching several series. And I'm watching a lot too... I don't learn, do I?

CURRENTLY MAKING

FINISHED WATCHING
  • Revenged Love ( Chinese BL) – 24 episodes [August 12]
  • Reset (Thai BL) – 10 episodes [August 22]
  • The Little Red Matchmaker (Chinese drama) – 24 episodes [August 25]
  • The Promise of the Soul (Taiwanese BL) – 12 episodes [September 5]
  • Memoir of Rati (Thai BL) – 12 episodes [September 5]
  • Century of Love (Thai BL) – 10 episodes [September 5]

Revenged Love

It's from China. It caused quite a stir. It's 24 episodes and I had a lot of fun with them. However, there's something that happened in one of the first episodes that almost made me drop it and that still bothers me when I remember it… The thing is, the story is about characters of questionable morality who do dubious things to get what they want, and then there’s chaos, so much. I enjoyed it a lot because the characters are completely unhinged and the actors are very beautiful. Plus, the entanglements between all the characters were delicious to me.

Reset

I started this series out of curiosity because a lot of people liked it. It's about an actor who is murdered and, after dying, wakes up in his body from 20 years ago (I think it’s 25 but I don’t remember and I’m too lazy to check). This gives him the chance to relive his life and correct past mistakes. I found it hilarious that when he woke up in his young body, he was very agitated and would confront people who would harm him in the future as if those things had already happened. I ended up getting hooked because I wanted to know what would happen next, but also because of Pond Ponlawit's precious little face (yes, I’m shallow). I thought it was a pretty entertaining series and I couldn't stop watching it. I finished it in eight days.

The Little Red Matchmaker

I watched this series because I wanted to see Tian Xuning (Chi Cheng in Revenged Love) in another role. The series isn't very good, but I found it entertaining enough to finish. It's about a pair of immortals who face a nine-tailed fox demon. They die in the battle and reincarnate: one as a famous mortal doctor and the other as a matchmaking immortal (I don’t know if I’m making a mistake about the categories of these beings, it’s still a bit confusing). The premise seemed interesting to me, though maybe it could have been a better production. Tian Xuning is very cute in it and he wears a wig… The upside is that its episodes are only about 10 minutes long, so watching it wasn't a huge commitment. I finished it in 10 days.

The Promise of the Soul

This one had a peculiar premise. A grandfather and his grandson die at the same time, but the grandfather's soul is transferred into the grandson's body. Finding himself resurrected in his grandson's body, the grandfather is forced to adopt his identity and, in the process, becomes very close to a guy that the grandson liked (but who didn't like him back). However, it seems the grandson wasn't very well-liked among his peers, and the grandfather has to face many challenges upon realizing this, on top of having to be a university student. The age difference between the leads put a lot of people off. It kept me entertained, though I must admit the last four episodes almost lost me. I ended up enjoying it, but I wouldn't say it will be one of my favorites. I watched this one week to week.

Memoir of Rati

A period romance set in the first decade of the 20th century. Rati, the adopted son of a French ambassador, arrives in Siam and stays to teach French to the officials of the time and to the king. He falls in love with one of them, Count Theerathon Wisut. Prejudices against same gender relationships, as well as class prejudices, make the relationship difficult. We also see the story of Mek, a Muay fighter and rickshaw puller, and Baronet Dech. Their story highlights that class difference that complicates everything even more. The series is very visually beautiful, and both GreatInn and AouBoom looked gorgeous in it; but in the end, I felt the story lacked impact (in my opinion). Maybe that's just my perception because I like tragic and sad stories. I enjoyed it while it was airing. It was cute and sweet, but I think the conflicts were resolved in a way that was too simple, but oh well…

Century of Love

In the early 20th century, San is saved by Wat and falls in love with her. They are in love with each other, but because of her status, she must marry someone else, but she doesn’t want to. On her wedding day, she escapes with San, whom she truly loves, only to end up dead after stepping between Trai (her fiancé) and San. San can't save her, but he performs a ritual in front of the goddess Nuwa using the five-colored rock, a magical object that grants immortality. This ritual allows him to live for a hundred years, provided he can find the reincarnation of Wat, his beloved. In exchange for not dying, every night he will suffer intense pain caused by the poison of the five-colored rock. Furthermore, every new moon, his body will completely regenerate to endure the torment each month, and the way it does this is by turning him into a small child. Just as he is about to lose hope of finding his beloved, since the time limit is approaching, with the help of Ton (the helper and guardian of the goddess's temple) they find the person Wat reincarnated into, only to realize that this time the soul was reborn in a man: Vee. From this point, many things happen before our couple can find a little peace. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, but I must admit the fact that Pond Ponlawit appeared made it a little hard not to get distracted during the episodes and scenes he was in, because he is very, very beautiful. Daou also made me not look at the subtitles and having to rewind the episode to see what I had missed.

Desire

I’m enjoying the toxicity, though I feel like it’s a bit slow at times. I don’t really have an issue with that, but I know some people do. I loved seeing Hua Yong being the fakest bitch ever and now that the truth is out, I’m enjoying that too… he’s just so unhinged. And like every week, I feel the need to protect Gao Tu, but I’m also starting to be fond of Mister Shen “Chronic Foot in Mouth” Wenlang. He cares about Gao Tu; he is just very very very emotionally stunted that he cannot show it in a normal way. I also love Hua Yong and Shen Wenlang’s weird friendship.

10 Things I Want to Do Before I Turn 40

The past two episodes have been my least favorite, but I understand their purpose in the narrative. I am looking forward to the resolution, and I need to read the manga because I’ve heard there are differences. And you all know I love 1) checking the differences between the source material and its adaptations, 2) el chisme.

My Magic Prophecy

It's quite cute, but there's also sadness and angst. What I like the most is the dynamic between the protagonists. I know it’s going to have a happy ending, so there’s no need to stress about it.

I’m the Most Beautiful Count

It's a very fun series that sometimes makes my heart hurt when it touches on themes of unjust laws and oppression. I am really liking Nut Supanut. I know there’s a lot of controversy about the adaptation and that Thai fans are not happy with it. I read some context, but I am still gonna finish it. I’m totally invested.

Shine

Gods, this show has been really good; every single episode has managed to leave me breathless and speechless. It’s beautifully filmed, and the story is compelling (for me). Also, the beauty of Apo Nattawin has me hooked. I am almost tempted to watch KinnPorsche just for him one of these days, but he looks very baby there and I kinda prefer how he looks as Trin. There are only two episodes left of this one, and I’m looking forward to them. I admit I don’t want a happy ending for this one, but as a person who tries to never set any kind of expectation, I hope it keeps surprising me. I’ve heard some people don’t like BOC because they think their stories are pretentious, and only having seen Man Suang, I could agree, but I’m genuinely liking Shine a lot. A LOT.

Khemjira

This one is so good, too!! I didn’t hesitate to start it even though it said it was going to be spooky, but so far it’s been fine for a scaredy cat like me. I’m enjoying it, and I would like to know more about the magic and rituals it integrates into the story. I’ve read some of the chats Pheem uses are actual rituals from Thai folklore. The mains are cute, and the side couple is cute, too. And the ghosts are mostly sad, except the evil lady ghost. She creeps me out.

*Secret Lover

I almost dropped it and I'm not caught up anymore, but I'm feeling curious to see what has happened. Is it FOMO or my obsession with finishing things? It's just that at some point it started to bore me, but if I watch a couple of episodes and it grabs my attention again, I'll consider giving it a second chance.

  • SVSSS Vol. 4 - Chapter 26
  • Counterattack - Chapter 189 (I actually managed to read a bit since the last update!)
  • Panguan - Chapter 6

I started reading Panguan last week for the Read Along organized by [personal profile] geraineon

The thing is that I started it without having finished Counterattack... And when I started reading Counterattack, I did it without having finished SVSSS Vol. 4. That means now I have three novels in progress.

I don't make wise decisions... But... shiny new things.

Hi, [community profile] no_true_pair! A couple of quick notes after the first week of our 2025 Eight Character Challenge, and, in particular, tags:

1. Thank you for tagging when you can! I've been adding tags twice a day as needed most days, however my availability might be spottier than usual from the 12th through the 17th. Any question/comment responses may also be delayed during that time.

2. In 2024, we ran out of tag space and a kind anonymous person bought us a year of Premium Paid time, which gave us extra tag space. That paid time is expiring on the 21st. ETA: Thank you to the kind anonymous person who just covered us for another year!

First, thank you again to that person! Second, and I feel like there's no non-awkward way to say this so I'll just try to be succinct: I don't want anyone to feel like they need to pay for the community but it's also okay if you'd like to.

When/if the community reverts to its previous status, at any point in the future, we'll simply follow previous plans of removing (non-recurring) character tags from early community posts and also refrain from creating new character tags for future rounds so that we can continue tagging creators and fandoms.

Thanks for being part of [community profile] no_true_pair.

2) Rather puzzling what is and is not available on Britbox. I was amused by the caption for the show Landward as "the long running series" when only 2 seasons, from two non-consecutive years, are available. I was also sad that For the Love of Dogs is a continuing show but Britbox only has up until 2016 available. (Shame about Paul O'Grady, who I'd not heard of before seeing the series, but who died still making it in 2023).

3) Another Silent Witness guest star back from the dead in a different role. Mrs. Hall From All Creatures. I noticed that they went all out for S20, with a costly and pivotal final episode. Read more... )

4) Teaching students to fact check might be the best way to teach them to reason about what they're reading.

5) More travel photos of Agate Beach sunsets, Oregon trees and flowers and the McKenzie River.

If I have any questions about the lingering tags, I'll make a clarification post, so stay tuned!

Thursday will be Picture Day at both the elementary and high school, so remember to look your best or at least the most like yourself that day. For those with conditions antithetical to photography, such as vampires and gorgons, alternative portraiture options will be available as well, albeit with longer processing times. For shapeshifters, genderfluid individuals, and those with unknowable appearances, we have created a mosaic portrait option to capture multiple presentations or representative iconography, so please don’t feel limited by the constraints of a single shutter-click instant.

The forms for Posting Date Claims, Pinch Hit Claims and Check-In #4 are now closed! If you have not claimed a date you are not able to participate in the posting portion, as the form was open for a full extra week and needed to be filled out by all participants who planned on posting.

Posting has begun! You can see all the finished projects on Tumblr by following the "completed shit" tag on our Tumblr (linked for your convenience).

The Bragging Rights template is up here!

It includes a link to the AO3 collection, a copy of the Bragging Rights templates for both WIPBB authors/WIPRB artists and WIPBB artists/WIPRB authors, and a link to the form you need to submit a link to your bragging rights or finished projects if you signed up and have a check-in ID (pinch hitters don't have to fill that form out). Please use the bragging right template to submit your finished works to either Tumblr or Dreamwidth!
