Main Story

Nevras

"Based on literature, when the evil spirit, Ottovia was sealed in the Eight Peaks, the saints saw the tears of sorrow and unwillingness shed. Over time it gradually converged into a lake at the end of the eight peaks."

The basis of awakening Food Souls is the magic crystals formed around Eight Peaks due to the extreme temperatures there.

The Academy is controlled by Gloriville but due to Palata's neutrality, they can provide financial support. There is contention about this buy the Royal Family has not spoken about it.

Elves used to live in the Polar Snowfield, there are ancient buildings left but it's too dangerous for adventurers to explore.

Looking at the locations illustrations, Nevras really is quite pretty. Too bad it's hard to enjoy it while freezing your ass off;;

Determination: Since the guild and academy are controlled by the Royal Family, MC wants to get permission to enter the latter.

A New Companion: Olivia obtained a distribution license, Olivia transferred to MC's branch to be nearby to help easier.

Winterland: Aw, Rice bringing a pot of tea, so thoughtful. :') They encounter what might a be student and help her against Fallens chasing her.

Break Through to the Academy: The first person they run into at the academy is an arrogant rude guy, even Olivia gets mad, The minister of the Chef's guild, Lockheed, shows up. He orders them away though. A student named Mithra has escaped (are students locked in??) and MC-tachi are ordered to bring her back.

Find Her: They encounter a geological surveyor waiting for their own food order who saw the girl heading to Blue Stone Town with a bunch of strange stones.

Take Back Control: They go to Blue Stone Town and help get the facility running after it broke down.

A Dangerous Time: They find Mithra on the beach.

Reasonable: She made a deal with the Fallen Angel Queen Conch to find out more about them. I guess her end is feeding her blue crystals, but the group destroyed them trying to help Mithra.

From the Academy: Mithra knows about the syringes and spills everything! A team formed 15 years ago to study Fallen Angels, they made a lot of breakthroughs, Using the crystals, they were able to transform and mutate other species, including humans, into Fallen Angels?! That can't be ethical...... The royal family approved it wtf but one of the team was murdered and their research was wiped. Sounds like Sakurajima still has something to do with it.

Cross the Sea: Sakurajima has been cut off for 300 years. There only choice it seems is to taking a fishing boat from Blue Stone Town.

The Town Leader's Assistance: They get permission to use the boat and provide food for the villagers since they won't be able to fish (why do they only have one fishing boat??).

The Evil God's Tears: Why don't they maintain the boat that provides fish for them?? Especially since it sounds like they don't have other boats. 'They all got destroyed'. They say they can fix the messed up hull but for some reason ordinary wood won't work, they need to get water from the lake and dip the wood in it. And for some reason they can't just gather some water in a pot and dip the wood at their leisure, they have to go out on the ship and awkwardly dip it into the water. And of course there's Fallen Angels! Mithra took some of the water, I wonder what she wants to combine it with?

Fall: Mithra delayed their leaving because she wanted mud...

New Archaeological Find: I...they fall into a hole?? Their whole boat or what? It's the 'Catacombs' underneath. The Academy dug an entrance but this is a different one and there are ancient engravings on the walls.

The Hidden One: Mithra reads an engraving about Light and Dark spirits that says they come from the same ancestors. At one point the world was almost destroyed and civilization was divided in two. Rice can read the engravings. There is 'another world' on the other side of the mountains but no one has lived to tell about it. I can honestly understand Mithra's reluctance to leave, a treasure trove of knowledge is right there...

Relentless Pursuit: The Spectra Fallen Angel followed them out so Olivia and Ichi save them. Why is he so hot?

Set Sail: I'd have thought Mithra would've wanted to get back to the academy to do her research but she's going with them. A red fog surrounds them and knocks everyone out. 😵 Is that Sakurajima's way of taking care of visitors?

I think I might have stopped around Palata in my first read-through? I'm excited to read events stuff agh.

Racing toward the end of the year...

I have a huge number of updates and end of year things to post, but I'm scrambling to get things done and wrap up some deadlines. Here's a brief recap:
  • Queen of Swords Press has released the new Astreiant omnibus! The Complete Astreiant by Melissa Scott and Lisa A. Barnett includes all 6 novels and is available in the various ebook platforms. However. Amazon is absolutely fleecing us on this, taking 65% of cover, so please, please, buy it direct from us or Smashwords/D2D or Kobo or even B&N or GooglePlay instead. I need to see if Weightless is interested too. At any rate, the Astreiant Series is eligible for the Best Series Hugo this year! Please keep it in mind.
  • I'm trying to wrap up the first third of my Data Analytics certification, with a final this week.
  • I'm doing Queen of Swords Press's 34th event for 2025 this Saturday - stop by AudreyRose Vintage in Minneapolis on 12/20 12-4PM for fun shopping with multiple vendors of various things!
  • I'm working on edits for Joyce Chng's fab collection, Sailing the Golden Chersonese, which we're releasing early next year.
  • I need to complete a new grant proposal in the next two weeks.
  • I have written several thousand works of new fiction, including working on the next werewolf novel in the last few week, thanks to writing sprints.
  • I have come to recognize that I will not be landing in an IT gig any time soon, if ever, due to needing remote work, my age and the state of the job market, so I'm enrolling in the State of MN CLIMB Program and have gotten myself a small biz mentor through Hennepin County Elevate and I'm doubling down on publishing.
  • New editing biz is open! Got a manuscript that wants some love or need some publishing coaching or know someone who does? Send them my way!
Okay, stopping there for the moment. End of year wrap up posts coming soon!

Drafts 2025

Drafts, an app by Agile Tortoise (AKA Greg Pierce), remarkably won App of the Year for 2025 at Mac Stories, a full thirteen years after its release. Three years ago, Drafts was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the same crew. I think it's a real testament to the developer's commitment to continued development and support. The app is currently at version 49, with new features added regularly. Originally solely for iOS, today Drafts is a Universal App with multiple use cases on mobile and desktop/laptops. It's been in the dock of my iPhone for 11 years and on my Mac since its release. It's just about the only place I enter text on my phone because its huge automation catalog enables me to send what I type to other apps with ease.

Drafts has a robust and long-lived community with a lot of smart people generously helping newcomers on the regular. Every single time I have ever had a question about Drafts, either Greg himself or one of the other community regulars has given me the answer.

My Favorite Features

  • Drafts makes a good scratch pad for any temporary text or notes, and it's super useful to have it sync between my Macs and my iOS/iPadOS devices.
  • While not a full-fledged notes app, it does have tags and workspaces for organizational purposes, making it a great repository for any frequently used boilerplate text or frequently pasted information such as API keys.
  • The ability to copy text from a web page and paste it into drafts, where it's instantly formatted into Markdown, helps me write Reddit and blog posts with a lot less friction.
  • My favorite notes app, Obsidian, has a well-deserved reputation for being slow on the draw on iOS. Drafts is the solution to that issue.

Apps I use With Drafts

  • Obsidian
  • Things3
  • Fantastical
  • DayOne
  • Shortcuts
  • Dropbox
  • Fastmail
  • Apple Notes
  • ChatGPT
  • Ulysses
  • Mastodon
  • BlueSky
  • Micro.Blog

In the past, I've also used it with OmniFocus, Bear, ToDoist, TickTick, Gmail, Google Docs, OneNote, Spark email, DevonThink, IAwriter, Notion, Roam Research, Evernote, Twitter, and Facebook.

There are hundreds of free workflows available in the Drafts actions directory for a long, long list of situations and apps.

Specific Use Cases

The Things 3, Fantastical, Day One Combo

The Quick Journaling Action Group lets me keep one running note that I can process at day's end to send the individual lines as entries into Fantastical, Things 3 and Day One. The appropriate parts of one draft get sent to three separate apps with one command.

  • Lines starting with "-" are collected and sent to Day One as a journal entry.
  • Lines starting with "⁎" are sent to Things inbox.
  • Lines starting with "@" are sent to Fantastical.

Things Parser

Using TaskPaper syntax, I can create a note in Drafts complete with due dates, areas, projects, and tags that get correctly imported into the Things 3 task manager using the Things Parser. I use this with a Drafts template to create daily and weekly checklists for recurring tasks. I also use the action group, Things for Things, which includes actions for:

  • Inbox
  • Today
  • This Evening
  • Tomorrow
  • Pick date
  • Work
  • House
  • Personal
  • Pick a Project
  • Make a Project
  • Selection to Things
  • Bunch of todos
  • Process notes from
  • Prompt for new task

Copy to Obsidian Inbox

I am all in on Obsidian, the massively popular notes app with a robust 2000+ plugin architecture. It does a lot of things amazingly well, but mobile quick capture is not one of them. To solve that, I use this Drafts action which saves the text to the default save location in my vault and uses the first line of the text as the note title/file name. I use a couple of other Drafts to Obsidian actions, including Add to Obsidian Daily Note and Add to Daily Note Plus, which add text to my daily note in different ways using a time stamp and a geolocation.

The Bottom Line

Yes, Drafts Pro is a subscription app, and if you want to create custom actions, you are going to have to pony up 1.99M/19.99Y. I would sell plasma to pay for Drafts if I had to. Drafts is also a text-only app. There are no images or file embeds available. You don't have to be a tech writer or a blogger to use it, though. In my former life in IT support, I used it all the time for email, closing tickets, and documentation. You can do an amazing amount of work with Drafts, but you aren't going to master it in a day. There is a learning curve, but in my experience, it's always been fun to see what new things I can do with the app.

12 Days (til) Christmas Day 4

On to Day 4!

It wouldn’t be Christmas season without The Dark is Rising! What surprised me the most is how few I’ve apparently written that are actually Christmas-centric, when it’s such an important part of the series! (It might also be that I just don’t have them anymore, or didn’t post them to AO3, because I’ve been writing for this fandom a long time.)

This one was, as the author notes indicate, scribbled out quickly during Christmas Eve church, and fixed for posting afterward. I did go back more recently and do some edits. I didn’t live in Wales yet in 2002, so got a few little things wrong – mostly younger!Ash didn’t quite get the church/chapel divide, and had them all heading into Tywyn to the local Anglican church even though Owen is explicitly noted as going to chapel. The further problem is that by the time this takes place, the chapel in Tywyn was already turned into flats, though I think the one in Abergynolwyn (closer to Clwyd farm anyway) was still going. I realise these details are really not that important to most readers, and especially have no real bearing on the direction of a very short fic about accidentally coming out to your parents, but well, I live here.

It is very short – barely over 1k words – so I don’t want the intro to end up longer than the fic.

While Shepherds Watched (TDIR, Will/Bran)
Rated G

‘It was the first Christmas Eve of his lifetime that he had not spent with his family, noisy and bustling in the bright din of a two-storey farmhouse full of children and spouses and nieces and nephews and neighbours dropping by just to say hello, the smell of cinnamon and apples and pudding, the warmth of the fire interrupted by bursts of cold air when the door opened, the sound of six or seven Christmas carols all jangling together at once.’

Song: While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night
(I wanted the Welsh version but couldn't find a good one, so we went with Carols from Kings for choirboy Will.)

Fic rec: We Wish You a Logical Christmas by little_ogre (MDZS Star Trek AU, wangxian)
Rated M

What caught my attention first about this fic is that it's the JIang, not the Lan, who are Vulcans. Half-Vulcan WWX brings LWJ home during Christmas shore leave, and pon farr happens. It's excellent.

So I packed up my jars of candied pecans and my bag of "prizes" and schlepped into the office today for our big huge holiday party - it was 5 departments' worth of people, so like 90 of us, so instead of everyone sitting in a room and eating together, we mostly stayed in our little departmental groups, but the beer-free beer pong was INCREDIBLY popular, Name That Tune also had a good turnout, and the food was excellent. Assistant J did a bang-up job organizing various game stations for people to play - there was also Jenga and Uno available, and a couple of gaming consoles he brought in so people could play Fortnite. *hands* I commended him and told him everybody loved it. And I did not have to lift a finger, except to bring the bag of prizes, aka, my stash of small gifts I've accumulated across the year but haven't given anyone yet, so there was a couple of packs of playing cards still in their wrapper, a couple of candles, 2 cute notebooks, some mini puzzles, and some holiday soaps. I also had a travel mug and a bigger candle to use as extra gifts for the secret gift exchange in case someone didn't show up, and it turned out my boss had given her secret exchange gift to someone else, so she ended up using the mug, and I gave the candle to a co-worker who tried to sign up for the exchange a week after I'd sent the assignments out. I felt bad about telling her no, but there was no way to make it work, except for me giving her the extra gift in the moment - she seemed really touched by it. And of course, several people asked me why I hadn't gotten a gift and I was like, I know who everyone is giving to, so it doesn't feel right to participate, but they didn't seem to buy that logic. *hands* I stand by it though.

I did get some lovely gifts though - a Calamityware mug from my boss, a couple of candles (one apple-and-cinnamon scented and one Frasier fir scented), a bottle of mango jalapeno hot sauce, and some Korean snacks from the co-worker who recently went to Seoul on vacation. And I got to leave at 3:30, so I was home by 4:45, which is truly a blessing. I also got to see and hug a lot of people I haven't seen in months, so that was also great. I truly do like most of the people that I work with, and I do miss seeing them, but ugh, it is so not worth going into the office more frequently to do so, imo, because so much less work gets done (even on days when there isn't a party). I probably won't go back until March if I can help it. *g*

Oh, and most importantly, my candied pecans were a hit! One of my attorneys basically ate the whole jar while he sat at his desk and the others all seemed genuinely excited about getting into them. So that worked out well.

Two more days and then I am on vacation for the rest of the year! I can't wait!

December! Time for my annual freaking out post.

Music: Two major (church) and two minor (kid) events; one of each is DONE. The major church event was the big stake recital one, with a combined stake choir and orchestra, and went better than I had expected. I actually had to do very little this year (no organization, as other people took that on (which I feel a bit guilty about, but not actually guilty enough to do anything about it), just show up at rehearsals and recital and boss people around when necessary and maybe some support stuff on the edges, which is how I like it) but it still seemed to take more executive function than I felt it should. Probably partially because I was trying hard to get people from my ward to join, with mixed results, and also partially because I was also sorting two children and five musical instruments for the orchestra -- E intensely dislikes playing anything else but viola, but A might have played either violin or viola this year (he ended up on violin), and I also was floating between violin and "viola" (I don't actually play viola or read alto clef, but I borrowed E's old 14" viola and ended up doubling cello an octave up). The other major church event is our ward Christmas program, so rather smaller, but I have to actually learn these piano parts which I have been super slacking on.

Yuletide: please send help, this is getting out of control. But it will all be okay. I am pretty sure. Maybe not quite as ambitiously okay as I want it to be.

Christmas prep: I finally got family presents sorted today, more or less. And D corralled us to go get a tree. More things to do here. We did get the ornaments on the tree and one of the nativity sets is up but the other one is not (yes, it would take about 5 minutes, I just forgot about it until writing this, lol)

This has not been a good week so far. It's been bitterly cold out the past two days, our router broke yesterday morning, and though Verizon sent someone to fix it this morning the wifi's still being a little testy, and apparently my brother-in-law is now sick. Not to mention I spent much of today discovering exactly how cataloging giant OCLC introducing AI into their system is just going to create more work for us catalogers, since we can't rely on the records involving it to be accurate.
It's supposed to warm up starting tomorrow, though. Good thing, too, since for the second week in a row, my D&D group is meeting to try to figure out where we go from here. Last week the number of players officially shrunk down to three, though one of them has now invited a couple of his friends to join us, and the DM decided to abandon the current campaign and start over. I've got to think up another character. Maybe a rogue. I don't know. Last week we also finished the "Death House" short adventure he ran for the three of us, only revealing in the end it's actually the opening adventure for Curse of Strahd. Which he was not now going to run for us without warning, he was quick to say. Though honestly, if I ever do play it, I will likely use the gnome cleric I created for the Death House. She feels like the right kind of character to use for that.

This was the best of the gingerbread cuneiform. I put the good ones in the freezer to give to pals tomorrow at brunch and will eat the rest, or something. This is one of the maple syrup tables, which were lighter in colour and held the clarity slightly better. (More water, therefore harder texture? Not sure.)

I copied characters from Andrew George's excellent renderings of the tablets, as any photos I looked at were way too unclear. However, I freely skipped tricky characters or sections. Sîn-lēqi-unninni would be pissed.

I got up to the trail about 9, partly overcast but no fog! Winter quiet, as it has been for a while, with only Ruby-crowned Kinglets and a handful of Golden-crowned Sparrows for Winter visitors. The north end of the trail wasn't a complete waste this time; I saw California Quail on the lower trail, and a Red-tailed Hawk stooped on something on the opposite hillside. Dunno if they were successful. The list: )

No feeding flock anywhere. Disappointed, I went to sit on the bench in Tilden Botanic Garden. Not many birds there, either, but some different ones. Best bird was Fox Sparrow! I haven't seen or heard one in Tilden (the Trail is almost Tilden) in more than a month, but one was chipping and I found another scratching under a bush. Another little list: )

It was actually quite nice out, cold but I had many layers and there was sun. I don't expect to be up there for a while now as rain is forecast for about a week.

I was all geared up to talk about The Game Awards, but now I'm mostly meh. I don't have anything new or exciting to say about it. Like with the actual awards? I'm not one of the cynics. I don't think E33 should have won fewer awards. It's just that good.

As for the announcements, I'm most excited about Exodus and the KOTOR follow-up, Fate of the Old Republic. Which I know won't be around for a few more years, since it was more of an announcement for hiring and funding use (and to get us RPG fans fired up wayyy ahead of time). Not at all impressed with the 'big reveal' they saved until last. A live-service hero shooter? THAT'S your biggest announcement? Yeah, fuck that.

I haven't yet played the new 'Thank You' DLC for E33 yet since I um. Started a new game? I can't help myself! Also hoping to play Dispatch soon. And I picked up Control from PS+.

I have about 2k of my epilogue/sequel to my FTH fic and I really hope I can finish it in time for the FTH deadline. If I don't, my recipient has already said it's okay but still. I was HOPING.

The new antidepressant is still working well! The only thing against it is the joint pain. I've got a pretty bad elbow out of it. But I'm used to pain so I'll take that if it means less to no depression.

Let's do it!

1. Gaming Dice. A half golden sparkle/half swirly teal 10-sided die

2. Diamine Inkvent: A chameleon ink called Ruby Taffeta. It's a deep red with, I think, green sparkles

3. Cult Pens: Plus Glue Tape. Nothing too exciting. Cost: $2.66. Total Cost: $81.09

4. Cacao & Cardamom: A Peppermint Mocha bonbon. It was okay, but you could barely taste any peppermint.

Ah well, I guess 2 out of 4 isn't bad.

This is the signup post for the Fannish 50 blogging challenge in 2026. (See the 2025 challenge.)

Fannish 50 began in 2023 with a challenge by [personal profile] colls in [community profile] swannee. Since then, it has spread to other blogs and communities.

The parameters are simple: Make fifty posts about topics related to fandom. You may set any theme(s) you wish, or pick random topics for each post. "Questions and Questionnaires for Three Weeks for Dreamwidth" includes a list of questionnaires on fannish topics if you want to use one of those as a framework. Post something like "I signed up for the Fannish 50 challenge at [community profile] goals_on_dw " in your blog, then put a "Fannish 50" tag in your blog to make it easier for other people to find your entries. Adding "Fannish 50" to your Interests will also help identify you as a participant or reader. (It is best to use exactly the phrase "Fannish 50" because DW search tools don't recognize variations as the same topic, and to attach the tag to a post so it sticks.) Another good idea is setting up a masterlist where you can link your posts as you make them, which may or may not be part of your announcement post. Then make a comment below this post with details about your goal. You don't have to sign up to participate, it just helps spread the word and attract more readers.

Primary posting will run January 1 -- December 31, 2026. With 50 posts, it fits neatly into a year with 2 weeks to spare. However, you don't have to do it that way if you don't want to, and there's no hard limit on posting timeframe. You could make them daily posts, or monthly posts, or sporadic posts, whatever works for you and eventually adds up to 50.

Every so often, I post an analysis of how I chose my recent fic titles! We're nearing the end of the year, which seems an appropriate time for another roundup.

In reverse chronological order, my fic titles since July:

Rambling about why I chose fic titles. )

What's really striking me here isn't actually anything about my titling habits; it's the fact that my last twelve fics in a row have been shipfics! That's very unusual; about half of my fics tend to be gen. I'll have to come up with some gen ideas!

Remodeling your house can be an exciting experience. It can also be an expensive one, which is why a lot of homeowners opt to go the DIY route. But any DIY remodel can also be daunting, even if you’re relatively comfortable with home maintenance and repair tasks.

Whether you’re contemplating a DIY remodel for the cost savings or because it’s a fun challenge, there are a lot of online tools that can make the planning and execution of your project a lot easier. The 10 apps below can help you find inspiration, identify furniture and other items that will support your vision, and even show you how to tackle the entire project, step-by-step.

Best apps for DIY inspiration

Every home remodel starts with a need for change: you're bored with your current look or you feel a sense of dissatisfaction with the flow or functionality of your house. But that feeling that something isn't quite right doesn’t mean you immediately know what you want. These apps can help you get inspired:

  • Houzz. One of the most popular interior design tools out there, and for good reason: With the Houzz app, you can see nearly infinite examples of interior design that you can leverage for inspiration. You can search by paint color, design aesthetic, or other details to see what other folks have done so you can steal their ideas and make them your own.

  • LIKEtoKNOW.it. Instagram can be a treasure trove of design ideas, but folks don’t always think to tag every stick of furniture or lamp in the photo for your shopping convenience. This app takes screenshots of Insta posts or other sources and searches for the product, serving up links to stores where you can buy it.

  • RoomStyler. This website offers a 3D plan creator and a moodboard tool, but it’s best used for inspiration. You can easily browse through designs created by people all over the world, and connect with other people who are also planning remodels so you can trade ideas and tips.

  • Morpholio Board (iOS) / MoodBoard Maker (Android). If you’re the sort who likes to make a mood board when tackling a visual project like a home remodel, these tools are perfect. Collect product images, color swatches, and other visuals from just about any online source with the flick of a finger.

Best apps for DIY planning

Once you have a project in mind, it's time to make it more concrete. These apps can help you plan out your project:

  • CubiCasa. If you want to know whether your dream furniture will fit in a space, or you need to calculate how much flooring or cabinetry you’ll need for a kitchen remodel, CubiCasa makes creating an accurate floor plan of your house a snap. Just scan your rooms with your phone, and in a day or so you’ll get a clean floor plan with dimensions that you can use for planning.

  • Pantone Connect (iOS / Android). It’s not free, but the myPANTONE app leverages the color-matching power of the Pantone folks to help you come up with pleasing, professionally-blessed color schemes for your home. It can even match a color in a photo and deliver a color palette for you.

  • Paint My Room (iOS / Android). If you want to take a bit more of a DIY approach to choosing paint colors, this nifty app lets you apply a color to the walls of your room so you can see what it will look like before committing.

  • HomeByMe. This is an incredibly useful app that lets you create 2D floorplans that you can easily convert into 3D floorplans. Then you can populate those floor plans with real, actual products to see what it will all look like.

  • HomeZada. HomeZada is a platform that makes it easy to manage all aspects of running your home, from maintenance schedules to budgets. But it can be used more narrowly to manage a renovation or remodeling project, tracking materials, costs, and timelines in one handy place. If the sprawl of a remodel intimidates you (or you’re just the type to forget how much tile needs to be ordered the moment you’re standing in the store), this app can help keep everything managed.

The best step-by-step app for DIY projects

Finally, it's time to get the thing done. But how?

  • wikiHow (iOS / Android). If you’re not sure you have the skills and experience needed to tackle your DIY project, this classic online resource can show you how to do just about any task, complete with photos and videos to guide you. Using the app is a lot more streamlined and organized than sifting through 1,000 YouTube videos.
