OUaT s1 - Clothes make the point

Short one this time! And all the text is going under a cut, because I can't explain this without spoilers.
Spoilers for episode 8.
So in this episode, Emma is running for sheriff. She was the deputy, and has been acting as sheriff for weeks, but Regina wants her out because she hates her, precious.
Regina runs her own stooge, Sidney, and there is a debate -- which is the world's worst debate, actually. But the words aren't the point, thank god. The clothes are.
This is what the debate stage looks like:

The entire debate takes place in that picture, IMO.
Emma is wearing brown boots, brown hose, khaki skirt, light brown shirt, medium brown leather jacket.

Sidney's wearing a dark suit, white shirt, red tie.

Everything Emma is wearing is saying "I'm already the sheriff."
Everything Sidney is wearing? Is saying "I'm the mayor's man." Because although it's hard to see in that first picture, Regina is sitting front row center in a red jacket that matches Sidney's tie, and every person in that auditorium is going to be drawing a straight visual line between them.

In the end, Emma wins for more plot-related reasons, but I was fascinated to see the work that went into the costuming here -- or to be more in-universe, the choices the characters made to present themselves. Really smart choices, for both of them. All Sidney had to offer was the fact that Regina would back his every play; all Emma had to offer was that she'd been doing the job and doing it well.
Funnily enough, a few episodes earlier Emma had mocked the idea of dressing like a proper deputy, and refused to do it:

Really fascinatingly? Emma almost never wears skirts. She's almost always in jeans and boots. Before this, the only time we saw her in a dress was when she was trying to convince someone she was a very specific kind of person, when she was capturing someone who'd jumped bail:

So putting on that skirt for this debate was a very, very deliberate act.
Next up, some visual Disney references.
