OUaT s1 - bits and pieces

arduinnaFinal post! ...for now.
There's lots of sort of random interesting things going on in the background of this show that didn't really fit anywhere else, so here's a grab bag.
Jokes -- or at least one joke, which cracked me up when I saw it, and still makes me giggle.

Hidden clues about the curse
These are David's Valentine's Day cards, one for his wife and one for Mary Margaret. Guess which one is the dog and which one is the princess?
There's also a giant signpost all over Storybrooke saying "hey, this is a land owned by Regina that exists atop Magic Land": the town seal, which is up at the Town Hall and also on the sheriff's car and badge.
So, yeah, that's Regina's apple tree, planted on top of a hill with a door in it -- leading into the magical world, which is not only traditionally "under the hill" in some cultures, but which we know actually is buried under the town. Snow's glass casket is at the bottom of a mine shaft, and Regina goes underneath her father's crypt down a staircase to get to her heart storage locker from Storyland.
This is the least subtle curse in history, man. And no one notices.
Emma arrives and things change
There's plenty of obvious stuff the show does for this one, of course, but there are a couple of little subtle clues, too.
Like, when she first drives into town, she drives right past a blue fairy, whose wings are "fluttering" like anything; the blue fairy set this whole plan in motion (as far as anyone knows), and this image of her is the first Storyland "character" to witness Emma's arrival:
As Emma keeps driving into town, we're treated to a very large closeup of a red light:
Which keeps flashing behind her, and then flashes behind her all through the next scene as she talks to Henry and Archie, a constant signal that things are stopped here - no one comes in, no one goes out.
(... Okay I have to point out, look at Emma's red jacket & grey top next to Henry's red & grey scarf here. This is the pilot, and they've just met, and already they're tied together visually.)
Okay, so, frozen town! Except after Emma's been there for a while, August rolls into town, and this time, this is the traffic signal we get a closeup on:
That's Emma and Henry off to the left, and August off to the right. Things are moving again in Storybrooke, and people can get in now that Emma has weakened the barrier.
Emma SWAN
With apologies tomollyamory, who just can't escape swans, there are a few different places that had swans before Emma arrived.
Henry's nightlight, keeping him safe.
The key to Emma's room at Granny's bed & breakfast.
Timey-wimey stuff
The show walks a sort of delicate line between keeping things modern and setting it up as a town that hasn't changed in 28 years. Clearly there's some contact with the outside world, and some things do change -- they have computers, they have cell phones, they have working credit cards.
But they also have things like cars that are all just that little bit older looking, and a tiny CRT tv up at Granny's diner that's not outside the realm of probability but really by now should have been upgraded to a flatscreen to keep the customers happy:
And nurses in white dresses, white caps, and white stockings:
Clearly, what's happening is that times are mixed up here, rather than static.
Henry is reading Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk #3, which came out in 2006.
On the rack of "new comics" behind him in the drugstore, that same comic book is visible, as is Kazar the Savage issue 1, which came out in 1981, and Fantastic Four #266, with Karisma on the cover, which came out in 1984.
I can't tell what the other FF book is, alas, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was from the 90s.

Dimensional portals
These have nothing to do with anything, really, I just think they're cool and want to know where they all go. Any ideas?
It's a stargate!! Okay no, it's a portal to Wonderland. But I cracked up when I saw this anyway. If I didn't have context here, I'd totally assume that was Daniel Jackson's hand.
The Mad Hatter
So there is one very obvious way to tell that Jefferson is the Hatter:
He has a lot of hats, man.
But also!
If you look beyond Emma, you can see a lamp made out of a teapot and two teacups, and next to that table there's a croquet set. I am just charmed. (I was more charmed, I admit, when Mary Margaret grabbed a mallet and walloped him.)
Jiminy Cricket
Our very first glimpse of Archie, before we had any idea who he was, was this:
Look behind him -- they set him up from the very first minute as emerging from the grass. Or at least from the mowers. They reuse a lot of sets on this show, and I don't think we've ever seen these mowers again, at least not from this direct an angle. Add that to his signature green scarf, and yeah: he's a cricket, all right.
And I will wrap this thing up with a quote from Grumpy to Snow, as she disarmed herself for a meeting with Queen Regina in one episode:
"Keep the little knife between your tuffets."
*dies*
And thus endeth the season 1 picspam series.

Specifically, they're Mad Hatter top hats -- that's actually the common term for them in millinery circles. :)
